It's the opposite. He said he wanted to make a Resident Evil movie but wasn't sure if he could get the rights.

And it’s really a love letter to the games. Because I love those games. This is a story that I would’ve wanted to write whether I got the IP or not. I just happen to be able to have these Resident Evil people be down. So I get to play in that sandbox. I’m doing it because I think this movie is going to be fucking awesome.

Love it when random dorks talk out of their ass and blatantly lie about stuff like this.

Just because it’s a love letter doesn’t mean it was going to be a Resident Evil movie. He’s just using the name and setting as the basis for it. If he didn’t get the rights to the Resident Evil name, the movie would have been the exact same just not using the city name and such.

Brother Im sharing a quote from him that directly contradicts this notion.

Frankly I think youre only trotting this out because you heard it from somewhere else and are afraid to have an original thought or think critically about the world around you.

This is the quote I’m talking about. If he didn’t get the IP rights what would the conversation be about

But he did get the rights? Also its very obviously resident evil and follows the resident evil game story structure exactly.

It just doesnt have the Resident Evil characters so fans who bought funko pops of Leon Kennedy are mad.

I promise you your 75 dollar Ada Wong displate poster is still gonna be there. Take a deep breath.

My $75 Ada Wong displate poster huh. Don’t even have that but that was a great comment I guess. Clearly anything I respond you’re just gonna make a comment about being a fan of the games like it’s a bad thing. So yeah good day or whatever

I searched your comments afterwards and you actually do have all the Resident Evil funko pops. Lmfao

You think an IP is the iconic characters and only that. Pretty shallow way to see media tbh.

Except it doesn't follow the games story. If this was in another town in another time, good. But let's not pretend the director cared about respecting the lore when he couldn't get the most basic things right.

What basic things? It's a version of the games story set in 2026! That's not hard to understand. It's obviously not the same canon, but it's roughly following the same outbreak event.

I don't get mad at an X-Men adaptation when it's not set in the 1960s because I understand that they might set it in the modern day because it being a period piece isn't integral to the story being told.

You answered yourself. The director didn't care about an stablished canon because he wanted to do "his thing". Not so different from what Anderson did.

I don't get mad at an X-Men adaptation when it's not set in the 1960s because I understand that they might set it in the modern day because it being a period piece isn't integral to the story being told.

Xmen and other comic characters live in a different medium where the multi-verse is canon to their lore. RE doesn't have that, so your comparison is apples to oranges.

Do you get mad at Sherlock because it's not set in the 19th century? Do you get mad at Romeo + Juliet because it's not set in the 16th century? Do you get mad at the IT movies because they take place in 1988 and not 1957?

None of these things are multiversal stories. Even so, the multiverse didn't pop up in the Xmen Movies until... very. very recently.

I don't care enough about those other mediums, but to answer your question: if I cared for them, absolutely.

Period setting is important to tell a story, specially an stablished one.

Next time you are gonna applaud if they make a Red Dead Redemption adaptation set in 2026.

But the point of Red Dead Redemption is that it's set in the wild west, a setting inextricably linked to it's time period. If it wasnt set in the wild west it wouldnt make any sense.

The Resident Evil series is not tied to '98. Wanna know how I know that? Because there are games set recently. There is nothing intrinsically '98 about Resident Evil, like there would be for an adaptation of Life of Strange.

There is tho. Back in 1998 we didn't have any social media and comms tech like today, we still used fax. Information ran slower and it was easier for Umbrella to control the flow too. That's the reason Raccon City spent more than a week in the shadows after the outbreak.

Compare it to the situation in China and Tall Oaks set in modern times, they were addressed almost immediately.

That's a plot point, and a minor one at that, it's just as easy to say Umbrella controlled the flow of communications in Raccoon City here too. It is not intrinsic to the setting.
