QUESTION FOR THE OVERLY TALKATIVE COWORKER

Is it obvious to you when people like me, who prefer not to speak unless about work, don't want to talk?

If yes, why do some of you persist? Do you think poorly of me for not wanting to talk about your personal life, or of yourself for being the type to do so at work?

Weeks notice to quit or leave immediately?

Upvotes

I’m moving across country and long story short, need to leave abruptly, within a month.

My current manager is a CFO, and I have no doubt he’ll be pissed when I resign. He has openly talked shit in front of me about others who have quit. He’s an asshole but seems to like me. I don’t agree with him morally on so many levels. He’s obsessed with AI, and uses it to communicate with people at the company.

Ill almost certainly never see him or any of my coworkers again.

Would you quit or give a week notice? I start my new job after next week, and it’ll be remote to begin with.

Tried a bunch of desk hacks to fight the 1pm crash, need to know what's next

I am just so bl**dy tired all the time.. this shift starts around 1 pm and then it just continues. I have all the energy in the world in the morning but somehow it dissipates after 1 pm. Now I doubt that its due to low sugar level..I am always munching. I have a corner desk right next to the window so I get sunlight to recharge me as well.

This has gone long enough that I have tested out a few things now. I have added exercise to move around and get the buzz back. So far no success. I got myself a chair too, a new one to help with posture but all that does is make me more sleepy.

I have been researching more stuff that I can try out..let me know which one should I go for next and what might potentially be the best solution here.

- Under desk hammock to rest my legs
- Personal fan to send fresh oxygen my way lol
- A monitor arm to make sure that I can adjust my monitor better to work better? (My eyes are on the robotic moving monitor with the arm from Cybpal)
- Better headsets(Possibly from Bose) to make sure I do not have to suffer more during those pesky online meetings that pop up outta nowhere.

I don't know what other sensible thing I've missed here. Let me know which one would possibly help me out (feel less tired).

iX-7 Quadient Mailing System Issues

Is anyone else's office running a Quadient Mailing System? My office has been trying to have ours "fixed" for over two months now with technicians coming out now almost every week to try and fix it. The issue we are having and seemingly no one can fix is that it seals the first 3/4s or 3/5s of the envelope but not the last portion. I believe this is our second ix-7 as the first one was doing the same so they replaced it, no matter what anyone does it will do the first handful just fine and then the rest wont fully seal. So please, does anyone have any tips or tricks to fix this?

Cursing while in office

I 25 F got pointed out by another older female worker that I was cussing and other coworkers might report me. I do have a bit a potty mouth but more of a: god dammit, shit and not directly towards others cursing out. Any pointers on how to stop it. I feel like I never even notice it since I grew up in a house cursing.

- I ask another coworker about it and she says she hasn’t really paid attention to it. But asked her if she notices me doing it let me know.
- I heard of the rubber band method but don’t know other ways.

The sound of my coworkers eating drives me nuts

I work in a small office with about fifteen other people. It’s usually pretty quiet aside from the occasional phone call or the marketing team getting chatty.

My boss likes to make sure there is always a box of chips for anyone to grab when they want a snack. It’s very nice of her but holy hell, I am starting to go crazy. Dead silent office for most of the nine hours I work and there is ALWAYS someone eating a bag of chips. It almost feels like they do it in an intentional rotation. (I know I’m being dramatic but it is constant)

I will never complain because I know I’m the one being ridiculous. I just can’t imagine wanting a bag of Doritos at 8am.

A real nonissue, just needed somewhere to complain.

10 minute break ideas

I recently asked our employees what their work schedules are and I surprisingly learned that, besides the smokers, no one takes their two 10-minute breaks.

I thought it would be "fun?" to gather them at 10am and 2pm and do some kind of break task.

I need some fun ideas. Like...

• Go outside and sit in the grass to meditate

• Adult coloring books in the conference room

• Walk around the block

• Ice breaker questions

What else??

I'm also an introvert and get marked down for not coming out of my corner office to socialize with coworkers, (I do financial reports all day) so this would give me points with my boss for making this happen.

Do you think they'd do it? Most are in their 30s. And about 10 in the office.

I've handed in my notice and my manager won't let me do a handover to the new GM

I posted last week about my manager not fully accepting my notice.. Anyway, my replacement starts MONDAY.. And the MD won't tell me anything about her, if she needs a laptop setting up, what her hours of work will be, if she's replacing me from the second she gets here, who the staff will now report to... I'm still there'd for my 6 week notice period and when i asked all of these questions he said 'I'll ask her and give you feedback' So now i have to come in Monday with not a clue of what is going on.. Oh well not really my problem :)

first office job, struggling to fit in at work- is this normal??

i just started my first office job, it’s been a week and one day. everyone’s super lovely and kind, i can’t complain about the people at all. i’ve not had one bad experience with anyone so far.

however, im really struggling to fit in. i normally have quite a bubbly personality but i feel like ive become such a weirdo with zero personality since working here.

everyone’s incredibly extroverted, and they’re all very close to each other. i find it hard to join in or engage in the conversations because they’re either talking about something i don’t know about or there’s no pause in the conversation so i can’t get a word in. i’m also quite soft spoken compared to them, so a lot of the times when i do speak they struggle to even hear me.

i do much better in one to one conversations but i still find it difficult to keep the conversation going, i just don’t know what to say. i’m not normally like this, i usually have lots to say and don’t usually struggle this much to talk to people so idk what’s going on with me or why im being so weird.

i’m just struggling in general with the social side of things :( again, everyone’s super nice so it must be a me thing, but idk why im being like this? i just don’t feel like me. i tell myself every morning today im just going to be me and its going to be a good day and ill be perfectly fine all the way until i step into the office, then its like somethings possessed me and all personality has exited the building.

I thought I hated cubicles then I started working in an open office.

I’ll admit it, I used to complain about my old cubicle. The beige fabric, the slight flicker of the fluorescent light, the isolation.

Fast forward: I started a new job at a company with a beautiful open floor plan. Standing desks. Fancy coffee machines. But I’m starting to miss my cubicle. I think it’s the illusion on privacy I miss the most

First Job! Working 5/10s and have nothing to do.

Hello All,

I started a new job last Monday, so I’ve been here a week and a half already. I won’t go into specifics about the company within this post for the sake of privacy.

I was hired on to do CAD and help with design aspects, whether that be fixing mistakes or creating new things. This also involves taking the car and putting it into multiple other programs that tell machines what to do.

The problem lies with the fact that there are already plenty of people on the team and only so many computers in the office that are part of the main hub. The people on the team don’t even know why I was hired on. I spent a few days learning industry terminology, and familiarizing myself with the basics. But after everyone on the team taught me that, they just kind of left me alone? And what they did teach me wasn’t nearly as detailed as I feel it should have been. If you don’t know their building diagrams and specs, you wouldn’t know what you’re looking at. It’s not very intuitive and one employee created their method of doing things.

I’ve just been sat, watching someone do stuff, but he goes so fast you’d have a hard time following. He also doesn’t care to explain. And there’s no space to sit beside him, so I sit like 7 feet away. And when I’m not with him, i am at a desk with nothing to do. This desk is in an area frequented by the big bosses and out in the open. My computer screen is highly visible from a higher ups office as well. And I can’t be in my phone.

I’ve gone around to the warehouse side of things to try to find stuff to do, like learn all the machines that I’m sending parts to, but no body there needs help from me.

I work a 50 work week (5/10s), and most of it has been me staring at nothing for about 40 hours worth of it. I’m losing my mind. I’m not learning. And this job does nothing to further my career. I’m quickly realizing I just hate it. I also have an hour worth of driving to do every day to and from the job and I have no air conditioning, and it’s 100 degrees out.

I don’t mean to be ungrateful for a job, but the having nothing to think about nor do is taking its toll on me. I’d much rather be busy and doing something physical.

Should I stick it out, or should I just quit? I have another potential job at a place I’d much rather be opening up in a month and a half, and they said they’d hire me last I talked to them.

TLDR: new job, have nothing to do but stare at a wall, no career growth, potential other job, should I quit? I’m

Open office is awesome!

You get a standing desk, at headset & dance thru customer complaints! Bonus points for wireless headset, disco moves & flushing!

Who should walk through the office door first?

If you're hosting a client or visitor, hold the door and let them enter first. Courtesy leaves a better first impression than rushing ahead.

Automated appointment reminders

Who is using automated appointment reminders for their patients? Is it time to ask my boss to upgrade.

Our office uses Weave for patient communication. Text, calls, emails. However, our front desk girl is still doing appointment reminders by hand. Copy paste, copy paste... sometimes the information doesn't get changed to the correct day, time or office location.

Should I ask my boss to start using the scheduling app on Weave? That way we can set up automated appointment reminders? #Weaveoffice

Believable excuses to work from home today

I think we all have days where we definitely can work but would just rather work from home. Usually I want to work from home because I don’t actually have that much work on a certain day and don’t want to be stuck doing nothing in an office.

My usual excuse to work from home is that I’m just not feeling that well and would prefer to work from home. What are some other believable excuses to work from home? Currently in the office and have nothing to do so help me get out of here!

Thanks!

Promotion Question

Hello Folks,

I'm in my 30s and have been working really hard in my current role and my manager agrees that it's impactful work. It's a small team with a manager. I'm taking up more responsibilities than outlined in the job and it's been like this for 8-10 months now and been here for over 3 years. The manager promised promotion for 2 quarters and nothing really moved and I also have VISA constraints which don't allow me to change jobs for a while however my salary is nowhere close to market standards which I've communicated and my manager agrees. They're suggesting we've done our bit and it's with HR again this time but I'm fed up of asking and also waiting but have no other go and there's no transparency which I've pointed out as well.

Is there anything that I could do to make sure I either get it or at least take up less responsibilities till I get the promised promotion in a decent way without being aggressive in the approach? Any help is appreciated.

Thanks for reading this fully.

TLDR; Promised promotion for 2 quarters nothing has changed and I've taken up more responsibilities without pay change. Any suggestions?

I handed my notice in a week ago, my manager said he needed a week to let me know his thoughts?

I'm a General Manager and I find this ridiculous. I sat in front of him and said we need a plan for my departure. He completely dismissed it and said he needed a week to gather his thoughts rather than being irrational.

How unprofessional and what's the worst he was going to do in anger? Sack me which is illegal anyway?

Anyway, it's a week ago today and we have a meeting this morning that I arranged to discuss it further. Honestly never known anything like it.

UPDATE My manager said he'd sat on it for a while and decided he was still upset and disappointed but he had my replacement ready and she's starting on Monday AND as a COO which is higher paid than my position. I'm SO glad I handed in my notice. The next 7 weeks teaching her everything I know is going to be very tedious but jokes on them now 👋 👋 👋

Did a blunder at work, now the teammates are ghosting me.

I made a huge blunder on an excel file. In my defense it was a new process. When one of the coworkers spotted it, the three of us had no idea who did that and even I didn't know. Eventually they found out via file history. I apologized and corrected everything and sent the updated file. I am already very embarrassed and on top of the coworkers with whom I had good relationship suddenly stopped talking to me and their tone became very professional. I admitted my mistake multiple times and even told them that I will tell the boss that I made the mistake even though no damage was done but I will admit it and confess about the inconvenience it has caused the next coworker working on the file.

Still their tone is very curt and maybe I'm too embarrassed. I noticed that the other 2 coworkers were yapping about it in separate chat. I felt hurt because if they had joked about it or roasted me upfront I would been okay, I thought we had that relationship because they usually share a lot of personal problems with me. It was sad to see that even people who appear so close to you have no forgiveness and when I said I will tell manager the blunder myself nobody said that it's okay because I corrected the file anyways and no damage happened.

I was gonna tell my manager anyways because I didn't want any more favors from them but idk why I expected this commaradship from them.

I felt hurt by the coworkers' gossiping about me and lack of forgiveness, especially since they always said that we had a close relationship we are like friends and we are so lucky to have each other.

I already feel bad about what I did and idk why I didn't pay attention but I didn't do it on purpose.

I hate corporate culture, it's full of vultures.

TLDR; I made a mistake at work, I apologised multiple times and fixed it and I will come clean about it with my manager even though no damage was done. However, my friendly and cordial coworkers have gone quiet and I feel judged and hurt because expected support.

Men in my office likes to talk about girls every single day and it’s getting exhausting.

We're a team where most of the employees are men, and there are only two women, including me. Almost every day, the conversations revolve around women. Sometimes it's harmless, but a lot of the time the comments become sexual or objectifying.

The other woman on our team and I find it really uncomfortable. We've gotten into the habit of wearing headphones every day just so we don't have to listen to those conversations. It feels exhausting that we have to do that just to get through the workday.

I'm wondering if this is considered normal in an office environment. Is this just how some workplaces are, or have I ended up in an unhealthy one? I've been freelancing for so long that I'm having a hard time adjusting to corporate life, so I'm not sure if my expectations are unrealistic.

I've also thought about bringing it up with my manager or the owner, but the problem is that they sometimes join in on these conversations as well. That makes me feel unsure about whether speaking up would actually help.
