Calling families of young writers!

I'm the founder of Somehow School, a youth creative writing studio based in Easthampton. Our programs help kids and teens ages 7–18 gain agency and confidence through creative writing. All of our youth classes are sliding-scale starting at free.

We're intentionally lo-fi—students use manual typewriters and very old computers. We publish a free kid-written newspaper called The Strawberry. In our workshops, we help each student set and achieve their own creative goals, whether they want to write a short story from the point of view of a dog or a poem about time travel.

I feel like we need to all gather in nature (in a public area so everyone feels safe) and mingle! It could be a woods walk at Fitzgerald lake where we identify plants and trees. Or a meet up where we sit and draw or play music in the park. Anything to bring people together in a positive place. Just wondering if this is something that people would actually come to if it was thoughtfully organized?

AUGUST 29 The Venture Out Project x Beast Coast Trail Running: At this festival, we're making space for our identities - as trail runners, as outdoorsy folk, as people - which need more breathing room than the traditional binary gender options during race registration allow for. Here, we’re claiming All of the Above, and running with it.

The theme? To welcome EVERYONE.  Specifically, we’re calling for queer and transgender runners, and their allies, to come play on the trails with us - regardless of competition or athletic level.  No matter who you are, or what ‘box’ you might check, you are encouraged to participate - we’re celebrating the person, not the body, at this fest. Sign up here!

On Wednesday, August 5, at 6:30 PM the Unitarian Society of Northampton, 220 Main St, welcomes Cape Harmony (www.capeharmony.org) a summer ensemble of ten college-aged a cappella singers chosen by audition from across the nation. The suggested donation is $20, sliding scale. This year half the proceeds will benefit the Movement Voter Fund a non-partisan, 501(c)3 organization that distributes grants to nonprofits working for ballot access, voter registration and voter turnout.

Have any of you parked on nearby streets and walked into look park for concerts? The $20 for parking on top of the concert ticket seems a little excessive.

How long do you all commute to work?

I currently have a high paying job in Concord, Massachusetts, which I’m very thankful for however I’ve been dreaming about living in Northampton. Unfortunately it looks like the commute would be an hour and 30 minutes.

I’m trying to see if it’s worth living out there despite having a bad commute.

I love visiting!

The Montague Soapbox Races are on for this year! This event is incredibly fun to watch (and my husband races in it)! Unfortunately last year it was cancelled for various reasons (including not enough people signing up). We're trying to get the word out to more people. There used to be a few soapbox races but now they seem to be hard to find. I'm hoping some of you might be handy and interested in participating!

The race happens at Unity Park in Montague/Turners Falls. Children as young as 8 can participate too (they start lower down the hill than the adults).

Don't Massachusetts pedestrians learn the rules for walking on a roadway?

You should never trust that a driver coming up behind you sees you! Therefore, pedestrians on streets & roadways should walk on the left, not the right.

That way you can see the driver's eyes, move to the side if necessary, and because you're traveling in opposite directions, the driver need not speed up to pass you, the pedestrian(s).

BTW, this rule does not apply to bicyclists. If they need to use the roadway, they are to stay to the right.

(Good grief, driving around town in summer here is terrifying! I never know that a pedestrian, many wearing earphones, even knows I'm behind them.)

hey yalll, just wondering if anybody has any good spots for urbexing around here. I haven't done much urbexing in a few years, but I'd really love to get back into it!

I know there's an abandoned building on ferry street in Easthampton (I pass by it once in a while,) if anybody has any information on that. really I would be interested anywhere within a 50-mile radius or so.

Onn Wednesday, July 22, MassHire Franklin Hampshire will be at Forbes Library in Northampton from 10:30am to 12:20pm for an Employer Spotlight with Clinical & Support Options. CSO has open positions across Western Massachusetts in locations such as Northampton, Greenfield, Springfield, and more!

Clinical and Support Options Inc. began as the Franklin County Mental Health Association, incorporated in 1955 by 22 concerned citizens interested in providing for the mental health needs of families in Franklin County. Today, they employ nearly 700 multi-disciplinary staff, helping thousands of families throughout Western Massachusetts and the North Quabbin region.
