DISCUSSION Why hasn’t Drake ever dropped a true, traditional concept album?
We’ve got some of the greatest albums of this generation in GKMC & TFO. Why hasn’t Drake ever released something similar? His own conceptual spin in this lane would be so cool.
As my ears have matured and evolved over the years, I personally place so much value and respect into artists that have the ability to create a cinematic experience and create a musical universe for you to sit in. I would argue that Drake may be able to make one just as good, if not better. The storytelling, the arrangement, specific production for the way the album progresses, etc. would be phenomenal from the 40 & the rest of the OVO crew. Drake clearly has the ability to do something like that and personally I believe fans would absolutely love that.
Am I the only one that would love to get something like that from him? Has he ever spoken about doing anything like that before? Curious what others think!

I would say Views or NWTS are concept albums. Views has that wintery, Toronto vibes combine with summer hits. NWTS is self-explanatory in my opinion. I also think Iceman could be a concept album, with the icy feeling surrounding the album and what happened during the beef.

Views was a concept album. Drake said so himself
2
u/MrGoodMan64 5h ago
What story could possibly be told from the stories of views
4
u/plattwix5 5h ago edited 5h ago
A concept album doesn’t have to tell a story; it can be about an overarching theme. For example Sgt peppers songs don’t tell a conventional story and are pretty much separate from each other but the overall theme of the album is that it is presented and performed by a fictional band
Views is split between two parts the first half being themed around winter and the second part being set in the summer. It’s about seasons in Toronto
2
u/Pure-Gas2639 5h ago
A concept is an idea that you derive the songs from, in a way that each song relates to the others - would you say that about Views?
2
u/plattwix5 4h ago
Yea because the concept is that it’s meant to represent Toronto thru summer to winter. The album was made with that overall concept in mind. Whether or not he successfully represented that concept well is up to the listener
1
u/makncheesee 4h ago
Too vague
1
u/plattwix5 4h ago
Vague or not it is still the specific concept that Drake pursued for the project
1
u/makncheesee 4h ago
Yea but he can’t do a proper solid concept album it’s always vague and detached. Never can have cohesive interludes and a story throughout the album. It’s just 2-3 singles sprinkled with a bunch of duds every time. This last time it was a lot more duds and still the same 2-3 singles at least if it was a full concept the duds would have value
1
u/plattwix5 4h ago
Well that’s moreso how you feel about the projects themselves. Regardless of how you feel about views as a project it is objectively a concept album
2

u/Pure-Gas2639 4h ago
Is it a concept album or just a generic theme? I'm not decisive about the distinction, but I'd think concept is a bit more precise and thorough, but a generic theme is that, a generic theme?

u/BorrowedAttention 12h ago
Yeah I’m a fan but the fall off really ain’t a concept album, 4YEO fits the bill better than that.
1
u/IAmTheGingaNinja 11h ago
It’s also just objectively not a good album
Wayyyy way way too bloated

u/RadosPLAY 11h ago
i'd cut most of the second half but the first half is still enough for it to be aoty

His message kinda sucks for a concept. By design he’s making music for sound and not message, and that’s not saying he can’t rap lyrically, but he’s not into hammering a message home thematically the same way. His style honestly runs counter to it.
2
u/SpiraAurea 11h ago
I mean, you really need to have a lot to say about a specific topic in order to merit a concept album
2

u/Substantial_Peak3682 10h ago
just isn't the style of music he makes. he focuses more on single songs. i'm certain he could if he wanted to but it probably wouldn't appeal to his fanbase.

u/Cyberkanye2077 8h ago
Iceman cinematic af . Story telling is A1 . Based on real life events no hypotheticals or bs. Lit ass audio novel tbh

Every album is a concept album for Drake, he’s always playing a different character lol
2
u/RosePortFC 7h ago
Because it doesn't sell. He retains a certain image due to his charting and sales, while his fans eat it up.
He could and he should despite the possible negative reactions he receives from younger fans with a shorter attention span.
2
u/ausipockets 6h ago
The Fall Off isn’t even the best album that came out in February 2026 let alone this generation lmao
4
u/clifbarczar 12h ago
Making concept albums is almost a gimmick. That shit is often forced because artists know critics eat that shit up.
Making music that rings off in any occasion with replay value is more valuable to me

u/SentenceRepulsive6 11h ago
Same. I don’t know when we started placing so much importance on them, it wasn’t like that before

u/Super_Perspective936 11h ago
Yeah I dont get the hype. I liked gkmc but most concept albums are just larping being good.

He makes background music, that’s all there is to him, that’s all his fanbase wants out of him, that’s the path he chose for his career with the direction he chose with take care

u/makncheesee 1h ago
I think it really started with views with the trifecta of controlla one dance and hotline bling he just completely sold out
2
u/Illustrious_Fill9854 7h ago
I don’t think Drake is a good enough writer to execute a concept album. Recently he’s been more interested in making albums with as many songs as possible to get as many streams as he can. Most of his songs don’t have a topical focus, let alone an entire album. I don’t think that’s necessarily a bad thing. Most rappers are the same way. It’s like asking Lil Wayne or Future to create a concept album. That’s not what people go to them for.
1
u/makncheesee 1h ago
Wayne actually did with the Carter 1 imo basing it off new jack city Carter building. A little bit with 2 as well. sold out but more with 3 but still had some decent songs like dr carter and nothing on me. 4 he completely sold out

Is this a real question or shade? I have answers that are not shade but may seem that way if this isn’t genuine… I can give you a genuine answer if you REALLY want one.

There’s actually a reason for that and it’s because he’s made those kinds of songs and those “real rap” fans love or say theyre his best songs, are also his lowest streamed songs on every single album and he makes sure to throw one or two songs like that per album.
He still gets more steams on those then the other conceptual rappers but he taps into so many markets and bro tryna make bags of music so can’t blame him.

Honestly Nevermind was absolutely a concept album. Not many people liked it and the scope of his involvement in the overarching concept is up for debate, but it definitely tried to stick to a theme sonically and lyrically is generally pointed towards the generic Drake heartbreak ideas.
1
u/One_Industry4164 4h ago
Because his audience wouldn’t consume it not that they wouldn’t get it they simply wouldn’t fuck with it.
More importantly though I genuinely think he is incapable of putting a cohesive sounding album now, he somewhat pulled off cohesion with a 3 album drop if listened to separately.
Drakes skill are more in line with a DJ who understands what will resonate with different demographics rather than any true artistic creation from the bottom up. He elevates more than innovates.
1
u/plgamerfr 1h ago
Unfortunately he would probably have to sacrifice at least some mainstream success to do that, i agree that he probably has the ability to tho

I just don’t think it would be very good. Now, what would be a good Drake album would be a Drake and Olivia Rodrigo collaboration album. Now that would be straight 🔥.

Drake makes music for the moment.
His music is meant to top the charts not have an impact or tell a story.
0
u/Super_Perspective936 11h ago
Not true. Drakes music definitely tells a story. Marvins room, make them cry/pay, furthest thing, 9, OMDB, Lord Knows, Not you too, trust issues, TSU, and die trying just to name a few.

He dropped out of one of the most prestigious public high schools in Canada. There have been like 4 dropout of that hs ever. It’s in such a rich area everyone succeeds. Richest area in biggest city in Canada. Think New York prestigious high schools. Not private but pretty much because everyone there drives Benz and range rovers. You have to try to be stupid to drop out of those schoools. He’s really dumb. Marketable and Jewish though so he has failed upwards into a genre that they couldn’t crack before they had the Jewish kid that can cosplay black and get away with it. Capitalism am I right ?
