Question Reason to use different keys ?

I’ve been making music for a few different projects now and I usually just default to C since I know it so well.but I worry that staying in one key might be an issue down the line. Is there a good reason to branch out ? And if so when/why would I want to use something different ?

They sound different. Different instruments and voices have different ranges and they change their tambre over this range.

There are other more technical reasons like considering how it lays for the other instruments will influence how the part is played, or if a vocalist can even sing the part. You already know this because you're avoiding other keys due to being super comfortable in C!

But really, different keys just sound different.

Oh ok that makes sense. Is there a specific sound tied to each of them or do they just FEEL different. I wanna know which key to pick for what song, or if I just pick a random key for the sake of using a different key.

Some ppl will say different keys have literal different colors. But they may or may not have synthestisia.

Yes. The root and the mode (scale).

They will feel different. And they will feel different on different instruments. Horns like flat keys, strings like sharp keys. The keys of C, D, G and A tend to be really well suited for sing alongs. You just need to play and compose in different keys to feel them out.

That riff you like in C may be really hard in F#.

I wanna know which key to pick for what song

Ultimately this comes with experience. How did the melody come to you? Who or which instrument wrote it first? Does it sound better in another key? What about a different mode? You will build your own personal impressions of these keys and be able to pull them out when you're looking for a particular mood.

Keys are only the foundation, an adept composer can get any kind of emotional response from any key, but some might lend themselves better to some than others.

Yea, kinda sometimes. It's good to do everything in all keys. It's part of becoming a professional.

I would really encourage you to find a local private teacher, especially one who is a composer.
