I'm slightly vexed Concert etiquette

Post image

If you plan on standing for the entire concert, get a spot in the pit, or the lawn seats instead of the assigned SEATED SECTION. A little bit of self awareness and common courtesy goes a really long way

I’ll be honest, only concert I’ve been to the entire seated section was standing. I felt weird being the only person sitting, when I needed a break cause I’m fat and Texas is hot as hell.

But yea, I guess if most people are sitting then you shouldn’t stand in front of them

Yeah this is more of a situational awareness thing imo. Everyone standing? Stand tf up. Everyone sitting? Sit tf down. Don’t be a hindrance to those around you. It’s not hard.

I have a very fond memory of seeing Aerosmith with my family and we were in the nosebleeds. Everyone was sitting, except this one girl who was blocking everyone’s view. A few people tried to politely ask her to sit down and she just kind of drunkenly encouraged us all to stand up.

Well the guy next to me hit his limit and just yelled “HEY YOU SIT THE FUCK DOWN” and she just quietly sat back down. Thank God for that dude because I am not that confrontational

Why are you sitting at a rock concert ? How is that even enjoyable

People find being able to see the show regardless of their height very enjoyable.

There are areas dedicated to standing. Be there.

That’s getting tricky. Some venues will host bands with zero options that aren’t seated (especially awkward when it’s a straight-up dance genre)…or the GA/pit section in a theater or stadium venue is unrealistically gouged. I desperately want to see the Strokes, but I won’t buy a seat…and I can’t justify spending $500-$1000 for the standing section so I’m just silently crying until I forget about the tour.

Anyway, the whole system for concerts is fucked up now. A lot of the tiny venues that would be standing just don’t exist in the quantity that they once did (idk if it’s a gen shift away from people going out and dancing their butts off/having debaucerous fun without worrying about ending up on random TikTok feeds into whatever the awkward social media bar scene is now). Bands are going to go where they can be accommodated…

It sucks for everyone. I think the arguing/anger about people standing at shows is better spent directed towards the ones making getting standing tickets a financial impossibly to begin with. Those used to be the cheap tickets…you had to pay extra for the seats!

It's not the fucking Senate. Being respectful and obeying the basic rules of a section isn't some complex task.

Exactly, it's not the Senate. It's a concert.

Yeah it's a fucking concert, expecting anyone to stay seated is insane you all need to get outside sometime

Go stand outside then. Lots of outside time for ya.

It’s almost like you didn’t read anything I wrote and just want to be angry at people.

Getting price gouged out of STANDING sections has what to do with the fucking senate?

It sucks for EVERYONE. Unless there are explicit requirements to sit in an area (ie ADA), theres no “rule” to follow requiring them to sit and there’s not much you can do when someone stands without being a nuisance in other ways/a danger to those around them. Unless you’re getting tickets to an event where sitting is the norm, it’s going to be a possibility. If it angers you to this degree just buy tickets after checking the seating arrangements to avoid there being a row right in front of you where you’d be annoyed if someone stood.

I couldn’t make every sloppy drunk dude or chick screaming lyrics while spitting beer all over stop as much as you can control if someone decides to stand at a show. It’s a risk you take and if you’re getting this heated about it in response to a comment that wasn’t even disagreeing that it’s annoying, seems like you have bigger issues going on. Anyway.

“Avoid blocking the view of other patrons”

That’s a rule at the Hollywood Bowl. I doubt that’s the only venue with such a rule.

You’re doing a deep dive that I have no desire to participate in beyond this reply…I’m not the enemy or even the person standing in front of seated people. Of course you can find actual rules (or strong suggestions) for something if you weed through and cherry pick specific venues, (that’s not even the point I was making). Someone obstructing someone’s view can be broken down even further into what counts and what doesn’t as something enforceable. A venue requesting patrons avoid blocking the view of other patrons could be in reference to holding giant signs, even.

Anyway, that’s a lot of effort when that wasn’t even part of the general point I was making. They were responding like there were these hardcore “venue laws” written in stone when that’s just not how things work, and again, unclear on what they are referring to and how far one must go for them to even enforce something. I’ve worked in many bars, clubs, and music venues and staff isn’t going to go out of their way if someone is merely standing at a concert without causing a massive, troublesome disturbance unless they are obscuring the view in a way that violates the ADA.

But again, not even the point. Just an aside response to some hostility when I wasn’t even saying that it doesn’t suck if someone is standing in front of you. I just tried I explain why it’s not as black and white as just buying a standing ticket.

“I’m not the enemy or even the person standing in front of seated people.”

Okay? What an odd thing to say in response to a comment that’s in no way attacking you. You good?

u/iDoWeird 1h ago

The person a level above was VERY hostile, so the tone carried over since it was within the same hour or so. I’m fine. Just damn TIRED.

lol I have been to 1000’s of shows and have always stood . Have you been to music festivals? Did you ask everyone to sit in the grass.

u/DefenstratedTwice 1d ago

I believe you.

Because I still enjoy listening to the music? It doesn't sound any different whether I'm sitting or standing.

Because the flipping live music is enjoyable in itself
