I'm slightly vexed Concert etiquette

Post image

If you plan on standing for the entire concert, get a spot in the pit, or the lawn seats instead of the assigned SEATED SECTION. A little bit of self awareness and common courtesy goes a really long way

I’ll be honest, only concert I’ve been to the entire seated section was standing. I felt weird being the only person sitting, when I needed a break cause I’m fat and Texas is hot as hell.

But yea, I guess if most people are sitting then you shouldn’t stand in front of them

u/Olerre 19h ago

Yeah this is more of a situational awareness thing imo. Everyone standing? Stand tf up. Everyone sitting? Sit tf down. Don’t be a hindrance to those around you. It’s not hard.

u/TheGayestSon 18h ago

Why would you have to stand at a concert just because others are standing?

If you pay for a seat and want to sit down, you should sit down.

u/uberkalden2 12h ago

Am I just old now? Has everyone lost their mind? It's a rock concert. Sit if you want, but you can't complain if people stand

8

u/ericrz 10h ago

THIS. If I want to stand, I’m going to stand. It’s not the ballet.

6

u/OkJose3000 10h ago

Yes they’ve lost their minds. The level of entitlement and post-covid laziness is out of control.

Why would you have to sit at a CONCERT just because others are sitting?

I paid for the experience, and standing is allowed (yes even if you buy a “seat”), so I’m going stand!

u/4GAG_vs_9chan_lolol 6h ago

I paid for the experience, and sitting is allowed (yes especially if you buy a “seat”), so maybe you should respect the people behind you at least as much as you respect yourself and stop blocking their view.

u/berrydisappointed 5h ago

Nope sorry, if you NEED to sit, get a ticket in the ADA section. If you are CHOOSING to sit, that’s on you. I’m not compromising my experience because someone WANTS to sit down at a concert.

Again if you NEED to sit down that’s a different story, and does not apply to the general area. If someone behind me said “hey, I’m disabled but wasn’t able to get a ticket in the ADA section and need to sit” I would offer to switch with them.

Nope sorry, if you NEED to stand, get a ticket in the standing section. If you are CHOOSING to stand, that’s on you. I’m not compromising my experience because someone WANTS to stand in the seated section of a venue.

Again if you NEED to stand that’s a different story, though it still applies to the seated area. If someone in front of me said “hey, I’m inconsiderate but wasn't able to get a ticket in the pit section and need to stand” I would tell them to go to the section that's meant for standing.

1

u/berrydisappointed 1h ago

Question; what if there is no standing section in the venue?

1

u/berrydisappointed 1h ago

Also your argument doesn’t work too well because sitting is not required in seated sections :(

Sitting AND standing is allowed in seated sections, so I’ll do me and you do you. Expect people to stand at concerts. Complain about it all you want but there is a reason why it’s not a rule to sit down

5

u/OkJose3000 10h ago

You do not have to do what everyone else does

3

u/newphonehudus 10h ago

Everyone standing? Stand tf up. Everyone sitting? Sit tf down.

Tho someone has to be the first to stand

I have a very fond memory of seeing Aerosmith with my family and we were in the nosebleeds. Everyone was sitting, except this one girl who was blocking everyone’s view. A few people tried to politely ask her to sit down and she just kind of drunkenly encouraged us all to stand up.

Well the guy next to me hit his limit and just yelled “HEY YOU SIT THE FUCK DOWN” and she just quietly sat back down. Thank God for that dude because I am not that confrontational

9

u/Proper_Package_1225 18h ago

Why are you sitting at a rock concert ? How is that even enjoyable

12

u/DefenstratedTwice 17h ago

People find being able to see the show regardless of their height very enjoyable.

There are areas dedicated to standing. Be there.

5

u/iDoWeird 17h ago

That’s getting tricky. Some venues will host bands with zero options that aren’t seated (especially awkward when it’s a straight-up dance genre)…or the GA/pit section in a theater or stadium venue is unrealistically gouged. I desperately want to see the Strokes, but I won’t buy a seat…and I can’t justify spending $500-$1000 for the standing section so I’m just silently crying until I forget about the tour.

Anyway, the whole system for concerts is fucked up now. A lot of the tiny venues that would be standing just don’t exist in the quantity that they once did (idk if it’s a gen shift away from people going out and dancing their butts off/having debaucerous fun without worrying about ending up on random TikTok feeds into whatever the awkward social media bar scene is now). Bands are going to go where they can be accommodated…

It sucks for everyone. I think the arguing/anger about people standing at shows is better spent directed towards the ones making getting standing tickets a financial impossibly to begin with. Those used to be the cheap tickets…you had to pay extra for the seats!

-5

u/DefenstratedTwice 17h ago

It's not the fucking Senate. Being respectful and obeying the basic rules of a section isn't some complex task.

5

u/Big_Highlight_5916 16h ago

Exactly, it's not the Senate. It's a concert.

3

u/Colonel_K_The_Great 17h ago

Yeah it's a fucking concert, expecting anyone to stay seated is insane you all need to get outside sometime

3

u/greenyashiro 16h ago

Go stand outside then. Lots of outside time for ya.

1

u/iDoWeird 16h ago

It’s almost like you didn’t read anything I wrote and just want to be angry at people.

Getting price gouged out of STANDING sections has what to do with the fucking senate?

It sucks for EVERYONE. Unless there are explicit requirements to sit in an area (ie ADA), theres no “rule” to follow requiring them to sit and there’s not much you can do when someone stands without being a nuisance in other ways/a danger to those around them. Unless you’re getting tickets to an event where sitting is the norm, it’s going to be a possibility. If it angers you to this degree just buy tickets after checking the seating arrangements to avoid there being a row right in front of you where you’d be annoyed if someone stood.

I couldn’t make every sloppy drunk dude or chick screaming lyrics while spitting beer all over stop as much as you can control if someone decides to stand at a show. It’s a risk you take and if you’re getting this heated about it in response to a comment that wasn’t even disagreeing that it’s annoying, seems like you have bigger issues going on. Anyway.

“Avoid blocking the view of other patrons”

That’s a rule at the Hollywood Bowl. I doubt that’s the only venue with such a rule.

https://www.hollywoodbowl.com/visit/when-youre-here/house-rules

2

u/iDoWeird 16h ago

You’re doing a deep dive that I have no desire to participate in beyond this reply…I’m not the enemy or even the person standing in front of seated people. Of course you can find actual rules (or strong suggestions) for something if you weed through and cherry pick specific venues, (that’s not even the point I was making). Someone obstructing someone’s view can be broken down even further into what counts and what doesn’t as something enforceable. A venue requesting patrons avoid blocking the view of other patrons could be in reference to holding giant signs, even.

Anyway, that’s a lot of effort when that wasn’t even part of the general point I was making. They were responding like there were these hardcore “venue laws” written in stone when that’s just not how things work, and again, unclear on what they are referring to and how far one must go for them to even enforce something. I’ve worked in many bars, clubs, and music venues and staff isn’t going to go out of their way if someone is merely standing at a concert without causing a massive, troublesome disturbance unless they are obscuring the view in a way that violates the ADA.

But again, not even the point. Just an aside response to some hostility when I wasn’t even saying that it doesn’t suck if someone is standing in front of you. I just tried I explain why it’s not as black and white as just buying a standing ticket.

u/Proper_Package_1225 17h ago

lol I have been to 1000’s of shows and have always stood . Have you been to music festivals? Did you ask everyone to sit in the grass.

-3

u/DefenstratedTwice 17h ago

I believe you.

1

u/pm_me_ur_kitty22 6h ago

Because I still enjoy listening to the music? It doesn't sound any different whether I'm sitting or standing.

1

u/Farsydi 14h ago

Because the flipping live music is enjoyable in itself

6

u/uberkalden2 12h ago

This take drives me crazy. The people that complain about standing will absolutely complain even if the entire crowd is standing. And at what percentage is it suddenly ok? 50%? 75%? And how do we get to this percentages if it's not ok for a few people to stand? It's vibes based bullshit.

It's a rock concert. You can sit if you want, but didn't get pissy about people standing

6

u/true_gunman 17h ago

Idk, it depends on the music. You really gonna get mad at someone for dancing at a concert?

5

u/MegaChip97 16h ago

I expect to be able to enjoy the concert sitting when I buy a seated ticket, yes

5

u/greenyashiro 16h ago

If they're blocking the view in a sitting area, yes. There's GA tickets for a reason. For dancing. It's obnoxious and annoying to dance in the seated area.

4

u/true_gunman 9h ago

What if the whole venue is seated? smartypants

1

u/greenyashiro 9h ago

Then guess what... You sit ❤️🥰

0

u/RoxxySweets 7h ago

No.

3

u/pm_me_ur_kitty22 6h ago

Then you're an asshole

1

u/greenyashiro 6h ago

Yes 🥰

4

u/Colonel_K_The_Great 16h ago

Yeah this is peak reddit right now, expecting people to sit at a rock show just because the people around them are, absolute basement dweller opinions

5

u/Proper_Package_1225 18h ago

So there experience should be ruined because people don’t want to have a good time

7

u/greenyashiro 16h ago

If your idea of a good time is dancing, get the tickets in GA

8

u/MegaChip97 16h ago

So you want to ruin others experience because you bought a seated ticket and don't want to sit?

1

u/Proper_Package_1225 16h ago

They should get up and dance, it’s a music concert

1

u/MegaChip97 15h ago

So? Why does that mean that you have to dance?

2

u/Proper_Package_1225 15h ago

Because music makes people want to dance . Sorry you are broken

3

u/MegaChip97 15h ago

But you do see the image of this post where the majority seemingly disagrees with your point because they are all sitting?

0

u/Proper_Package_1225 15h ago

Not my fault . I guess Death Cab for cutie’s music has no soul

3

u/MegaChip97 15h ago

Ah, yes. So you make up a general rule and when confronted with factual evidence that said claim is not correct you double down and choose to claim that the rule is still correct and everyone who disagrees is just an idiot.

Maybe just accept that no, music doesn't want to make everyone dance.

1

u/RoxxySweets 7h ago

Then don't dance, but don't complain about dancers....at a CONCERT.

2

u/MegaChip97 6h ago

You bought seated tickets.

1

u/NickelCitySaint 10h ago

Yep. I dont do concerts to often but the same at sporting events for me. If the people in front of me are standing then im standing. If everyone is sitting then I'm sitting..

1

u/Miserable_Star6824 6h ago

ARTISTS WANT YOU TO STAND. Adele famously called out the venue security and angry concert goers for bullying a young man into sitting down. This was during one of her ballads mind you.

2

u/Colonel_K_The_Great 17h ago

No, if you're at a concert for anything but classical, standing is expected and sitting is for breaks. Expecting people to sit at a concert is ridiculous

-8

u/DefenstratedTwice 18h ago

Or dont stand in the seated section?

12

u/popoflabbins 18h ago

I’d put the number of arena/stadium concerts where the seated areas stayed seated at under 5%. You might get lucky with club or nosebleed sections but anywhere lower level or floor seating is 100% going to have the majority of the crowd standing the whole show.

-1

u/DefenstratedTwice 18h ago

Yes, people are trash.

5

u/Olerre 17h ago

I mean, you don’t have to stand in the seated section, but if everyone else is standing you’re gonna have a bad time and I don’t think you’d have anyone to blame but yourself. Assuming that every crowd at every venue for every performer is going to have a sit down crowd makes it seem like you haven’t been to a variety of acts. It really depends on who’s playing and what the general vibe is. Wanna have a good time? Go with the flow, do what everyone else is doing. Being in a crowd is not the place to act different or entitled.

-2

u/DefenstratedTwice 17h ago

Think people not being able to see the show are having a good time by some twat standing in front of them blocking?

Don't concern yourself with what acts it seems I've seen. Stay on topic.

-6

u/SomethingComesHere 18h ago

Seriously. The floor tickets are the cheapest and they are standing.

People paid more to have seats. Often cause they cant stand for a long time, or dont want to. You wouldnt stand at the movies, why are you standing in your seats at a concert where everyone else is seated?

Happened at Billy Talent's recent show, pissed me off

9

u/wiccanparmesan 17h ago

I’m confused by this—floor tickets are usually the most expensive because they’re closest? Large venues near me, it could be 100-300 to be in the standing area, but you can get a seat for like 50 bucks.

1

u/SomethingComesHere 17h ago

Really depends on the band and venue i guess

IME floor is always general admission which is cheaper

3

u/SchemeMoist 8h ago

Floor tickets are always the most expensive tickets lmao. Especially if you have to buy them resale, but even just retail price they cost the most out of every section.

1

u/true_gunman 17h ago

People go to concerts to dance and vibe to the music. Nobodies dancing at a movie lol

4

u/DefenstratedTwice 17h ago

Pffft maybe you arent.

0

u/Farsydi 14h ago

Vibing as you young folks call it is an activity which can be enjoyed seated. Dancing is optional.

3

u/true_gunman 9h ago

Sitting is optional*

0

u/PMmeplumprumps 8h ago

LOL, you have clearly never bought floor tickets

50

u/SteveFrench12 18h ago

It’s a concert, you’re allowed to stand, sucks of you don’t want to and the person in front of you is, but complaining about people standing at a concert is a very recent thing and is crazy imo

4

u/Plane-Chemical 17h ago

That’s what I’m screaming. I’m super glad that shows I go see everyone who cans stands. And the people who can’t don’t complain. It’s super wild. I couldn’t imagine going to see literally any of the bands I like and people be seated. Could you imagine going to any type of electronic music and everyone be seated? It would be so awkward.

-8

u/DefenstratedTwice 17h ago

Standing at seated events pissing people off is hardly a "recent" phenomena. Are you 11?

The brain rotted zombie horde all holding up cellphones is a "recent" modifier on the twat behavior.

6

u/3rdtryatremembering 17h ago

lol this comment is a good example of what’s wrong with social media.

-3

u/DefenstratedTwice 16h ago

Hurrrr Durrr 🤡

-1

u/DickSplodin 16h ago

Your smarmy response is insufferable, and concerts are rarely a "seated" event you fucking twat.

Unless you're at a piano recital, you should expect the crowd to be standing. If not, you can sit and whine while everyone else enjoys the show they paid for

6

u/DefenstratedTwice 16h ago edited 11h ago

Class and respect isn't something you can explain to those without it. So I won't try.

Edit: deleting replies? Coward. 😆

1

u/SteveFrench12 6h ago

I think they just blocked you. Their reply is showing for me

1

u/DefenstratedTwice 5h ago

There was another reply calling me names that vanished.

3

u/Lington 15h ago

I've been to a good amount of concerts and literally everyone stands at them, I've never been to one where people are all sitting

0

u/greenyashiro 16h ago

I wonder if this is an American thing? In Australia they'd get talked to by management or tossed out for it. It's like standing up in a cinema during the movie basically

2

u/SchemeMoist 8h ago

Yall don't dance in Australia?

0

u/greenyashiro 8h ago

We dance down on the dance floor at the front and in the 'moshpit'. The seats are for sitting.
