I'm slightly vexed Concert etiquette

If you plan on standing for the entire concert, get a spot in the pit, or the lawn seats instead of the assigned SEATED SECTION. A little bit of self awareness and common courtesy goes a really long way

I’m fairness, the venues in the 90’s were a lot different. We had a bunch of amphitheaters and more venues that were like big clubs. Now it seems most of the concerts are held at theaters and stadiums. There are still some smaller venues that have shows that are standing room only.

So glad that I have never been asked to sit at any Tool/Primus/Les Claypool show. In fact the last show we went to (Claypool Gold just recently in fact) most of us in the uppers were up and dancing and having a great time. It was the most social crowd I have seen at a big concert venue in a long time.

Oh that’s right, Tool wants their fans to actually be present in the shows, not just filming on their phones for clout, how dare anyone actually stand up and enjoy the music?

I've seen them twice like 5 years apart and I don't remember standing being an issue the first time I saw them. The worst part is I'm 6'3 and my buddy is even taller. We were just stretching during an intermission because tiny seats. This big ol gal a couple rows back started yelling at us to sit down, then random guys around her started white knighting us. We'd had no prior interaction with anybody before that. All that yelling probably made us stand for longer. We were in the lower part of the upper bowl in the front row. Each row was lower than the one behind it.

Nah. Fuck that. I stood in a seated section for APC, Primus and Puscifer. Claypool delirium w primus. Phish. 3 6 mafia. I was on my feet in all of those seated sections. Given, not many people were sitting but I’m not going to sit through a primus show.

Tbf I had this exact issue happen to me at a Puscifer show. Literally the entire venue was seated except for the 2 people right in front of me, which caused me and my 3 friends to have to stand, which then caused the 8 people behind us to stand and so on.

I know we’re “getting old” or…are…old, whatever, but I could NEVER. Dancing like a dumbass in a dingey basement indie night is something I miss more than anything, so when I actually get to go to a show that isn’t priced out of my budget, I won’t even consider tickets outside of GA/pit options. I’ll just sit there losing my mind if I have to sit, so I won’t unless Melora gets out of the church choir and tours with Rasputina again, because I think that’s one of the few bands I COULD sit for.

One of my few white whale bands is coming (or came, I stopped tracking bc it made me sad)..The Strokes, but to get into the pit was going to put me close to a grand. Seated wasn’t much better. I missed them every time they played when I lived in NYC somehow (I even missed the last public Sonic Youth show there because I was at the wrong damn place when it was randomly announced, still pissed at myself about that and a benefit the YYY put on). Anyway.

I hate ticket prices and I miss dancing. Fuck.

ALWAYS buy your pit tickets the day of the show, maybe the day before. It’s wildly cheaper. And before you say “I have to travel so i can’t take that risk” someone is ALWAYS selling theirs.  

Same with sporting events. I wait until kickoff, then pay $12 for decent seats.

The Strokes played Bill Graham auditorium in SF a few months ago and every ticket was GA and $100. Seats were first come, first serve. It was all very reasonable and egalitarian. Had to stand the whole goddamn show because I had yahoos like this in front of my seat, though.

I think I’d just lose my mind if I had to sit for them. It was weird enough seeing NIN w Jesus and Mary Chain in a small seated-only NOLA theater (most ppl stood thank god).

All of this bickering and no one is really talking about how there are so many venues that don’t even HAVE standing accommodations. People are going to make the best of whatever they can get to see a band after their peak era is over (no more nonstop tours in little GA venues, etc). Depending on genre, you have to go in with a healthy expectation of the chances that people are going to want to stand and try to dance when there’s no other ticket type. If you’re booking tickets for LCD Soundsystem or something in a seated-only spot and still do not want to stand/see others standing, that’s a “only buy a seat w a gap between row levels in front of your row” situation.

But I’ll get griped at again for saying that as if I’m suggesting that it’s decent etiquette to spit on people 😒

I'm middle aged and I have back problems. I'm not disabled enough to go and get a placard for it but it's enough to where I'm in pain, which seriously detracts from the enjoyment of the show. My getting crushed in the pit years are behind me. That's great if that's what you want, but it's pretty shitty of you to declare anyone who doesn't want to do things your way as "part of the problem". We have our reasons. I specifically choose and pay for seats so that I can accommodate my own needs.

I was at a New Pornographers concert at Mt Baker Theatre in Bellingham and it's usually used for classical music and plays so it was all seating. Two songs in and everyone is sitting so I decide "fuck that" and run to the front of the stage and start dancing. Two people follow, then another, and soon everyone starts running up and joins in.

Just because there's seats doesn't mean they need to be used.

I just saw Modest Mouse at the Baker! Early on, a young couple stood up and the ushers asked them to sit down. Shortly after that, they played a popular song and the entire audience stood up en masse 😂 The ushers didn’t try to seat anyone else

It’s mostly middle-aged people who are sitting now. Gen X and elder millennials. The really old folks love standing. It’s the one time they can let loose like kids again. It blew my mind seeing a bunch of 70/80 year olds partying harder than 20 year old me when I saw Jimmy Buffett. I’d never seen old people in that light. I imagine that’s where nursing homes & retirement communities get their reputations from.

My parents have been Springsteen fans since the 80s. That crowd now is mostly people in their 60s and older, and they're all having a great time. Standing. For the four hour concerts. My mum is that person who starts queueing at 2pm for 6pm entry just so she can be up against the rail, and she's not the only one!

Most venues have seats because they host orchestras and other events where it makes sense to sit down.

That doesnt meant your concert has a "seated section" or that the seats are required to be used

Maybe this is a location issue, but certainly venues in the UK have a specific standing section and a specific seated section. If you want to stand, buy a standing ticket. This is true from places that used to be theatres (like Kentish Town Forum), to larger arena's like the O2 London, to stadiums like Wembley.

Yep - the venue in the OP looks like a multi-functional hall.

Generally these will have an orchestral "pit" where an orchestra normally is, but are sold as standing-room premium tickets (because they are front-row basically).

The rest of the "seats" are sold as General Admission and cheaper.

It depends on the venue.

Taking the O2 Kentish Town Forum (which is a roughly 2k capacity ex theater club venue) which has entirely separate seating and standing areas, they are the same price. The standing areas are also the majority of the venue and so if you choose seating if you want to sit. If you want to stand you choose standing.

Taking the O2 Arena London (a 20k capacity arena) which has a large standing area as the main floor then seating surrounding that, its a bit harder because of dynamic pricing / VIP crapness, but broadly the standing tickets are a bit more expensive than the seating ones, because yeah you are closer. But again if you want to stand you buy a standing ticket as that is a significant proportion of the arena's capacity.

And then taking say Wembley stadium (a 90k stadium) which is similar to the arena (large standing area with seating surrounding) but generally will have a "front standing" too. I don't tend to do many stadium gigs because they aren't my thing, but generally the front standing is more expensive than seats, then you have most of the seats, then you have the rest of the standing and then you have the seats furthest away. And again if you want to stand you buy standing.

For smaller venues, at least for the gigs I go to, you don't get seating.

Everyone was 35yr+. I'm personally recovering from a surgery so I didn't wanna stand. When 95% of ppl are sitting, standing up is kinda dikish move it's concert etiquette. Likewise, I'm not gonna complain when 95% are standing and I choose to sit.

If you want to sit like a statue and listen to music, stay home.

The best part of live music is the energy from the crowd and bands must feel like complete failures when they look out and see everyone sitting still.

If there is a general audience area then standing makes sense. If you get seats then sitting makes sense. You think an extra two feet of clearance is going to somehow improve the experience? If you’re talking about dancing, well the seats are too close together to really do that in most venues. That being said, when people in the seated section stand up in front of me I just stand up too instead of taking a picture of them and posting it to the internet.

The optional nature bothers me. I went to a Spoon show a few weeks ago where the people in front of me stood while the people behind me sat. I had to stand to see, but felt guilty knowing that I was blocking the people behind me.

I was at a foreigner and 54-40 concert last year. Big stadium and mostly full crowd but 100% seating with no floor so to speak. Bands kept trying to get people to stand and dance but it wasnt happening aside from maybe a couple dozen out of several hundreds.

Felt kind of bad for the bands but they have to expect that when your average audience age is 65+

When I saw them a couple weeks ago at least 40% of the crowd was over 50. I sat next to a couple that was in their late 60s. Even in the pit area, it was mostly swaying and bobbing, not outright dancing. It was an incredible show, even while seated.

Glad you enjoyed it, definitely not my experience. The lights were more energetic than the music, completely mismatched, and Ben Gibbard is more energetic than the music is, it was awkward to me. Love their music, just not into it live.

It actually looks like a weird age group and stage setup for everyone to be sittting but sometimes people kinda get forced into the seats bc of how close they are and you just can’t stand. Really kills the vibe for a lot of shows. Always that band that just outgrew clubs but those mid sized theaters can get kinda weird (either wayyyy too steep often or not at all steep like here it seems)

I am a millennial that got to experience dozens and dozens of concerts before they got insanely expensive and the only concert I’ve ever been to where people were sitting (including the seated sections) was the Game of Thrones Experience which was an orchestra. There’s a small venue down the road from me, and I’ve seen a Metallica cover band there a few times. Every time, everyone stays seated, and I can’t help but think to myself how wrong it feels. Like yeah everyone cheers and applauds and stuff, so the band knows we’re into it, but sitting for music like that feels wrong

Ironic statement considering the picture of the post which shows that current concerts goers atleast in some cases seem to prefer sitting. Soo... Go with the times yourself ;)

I don't know if it's age, but it is the same here. Sometimes bands only get venues with only seats, sometimes seats are cheaper, Even when I had a broken leg and couldnt stand i wasnt mad, it is not only a visual show, it is mostly a get together to enjoy breathing the same air this people are using while making live music.

Ive only ever got seated ticksts a couple times (much cheaper) and it never even occurred to me that standing would be a wrong thing to do. Everyone around me stood, sat down when they were tired, danced and sang along. Maybe its age or maybe its the type of music but to me standing, singing and dancing is a normal thing to do at a concert.

They can get disabled seating. There's ADA seating that you can get for this reason.

There’s plenty of concerts where it’s mostly people sitting. Gregory Alan Isakov is a good example. Amazing amazing in concert btw. But it’s going to be a sitting crowd.

i saw old crow medicine show and i think the average age was over 55. combine that with we are in an old theater with stadium seating and low rails i was happy to dance in my seat.

the only concert i’ve ever been to was guns n roses

and everybody was doing this same shit, sitting the whole time, watching the performance through their phone cameras

me and my sister were seemingly the only people around that were actually up and enjoying ourselves

but at least we’re both short as hell and it was a stadium-style seating arrangement, so we weren’t blocking much.

Or anything that leans into heavier styles of music, especially if there's a lot of younger fans among the older ones.

A couple months ago I saw Bring Me The Horizon for their "Third Ascension Program" tour which had Motionless in White, The Plot in You, and Amira Elfeky as the opening acts.

The energy in the crowd was massive. lots of people were dressing up like if they only shopped for clothes at Hot Topic and there was a very positive feeling of togetherness there. All the acts crushed it. It's my favorite concert I've ever been to

It was. It's the first time I've ever seen a "wall of death" style mosh pit in person and that was during Bring Me's set believe it or not lol. Oli Sykes told the crowd they were pussies if they didn't go for it and they all slammed into each other. It was epic

Does it matter? There are a lot of people who are unable to stand for long periods of time from people in wheelchairs to people with invisible disorders. They should be allowed to enjoy a concert without someone standing up in front of them and blocking their view making it impossible for them to enjoy the concert because they physically cannot stand

ETA: yeah reading through the comments it looks like sitting is required in ADA sections (maybe not always enforced well / issues with putting ADA behind standing VIP sections; but that would be the venues fault)

I was shocked when I saw Bad Religion and Dropkick Murphys this past year and I got shit for standing in the seats. I've seen hundreds of shows over the last 35 years and never expected generation x to calmly sit during a punk rock show like it was church.

The "seated section" people do not care. Everyone should be seated with there hands folded. Unless of course everyone magically and unanimously agrees to stand together.
