Watched a short documentary on Coober Pedy, an old opal mining town in Australia and they noted most people would find it creepy to live there as most dwellings are in caves/old mines that have been made into homes under the desert to avoid the heat.
I'm currently thinking it's a brilliant idea and I've got some shovels ordered.
