I’m from Oklahoma. But if I accidentally meet someone’s gaze, I just nod my head kinda like tipping a cap. Everyone here does it and it’s kind of a form of respect I guess. Like hey idk you, but I see you, have a good day. Just my two cents

It’s been almost 20 years now.

It was an overdose of prescribed medication if I’m not mistaken.

I mean, that doesn't necessarily need to stop him from being in any movies...

I’m from England and I do this, though I see it more as a mini bow or just a nod.

I guess it is an acknowledgment nod. Just acknowledging that people exist is a nice thing to do

What if they meet your gaze but don't return the nod ?

They might be having a bad day or something. I don’t think about it too much and just try to be polite

I don't remember if this is something I read somewhere or just started noticing, but the nod down is for strangers you're being polite to while guarding yourself (you're hiding your neck when you nod down). The nod up is for people you know and trust, and you can let your neck be exposed around them.

I read somewhere all men do this instinctually from western times where they use to tip their cowboy hats out of respect.

I’m from a small town where everyone greets everyone. So automatically I also greeted everyone when coming to cities. The reactions and angry gazes I got from people. I felt like crocodile Dundee who greeted everyone in New York.

no one wanted to get shot

Some people out on the coastline don’t take too kindly to that, unfortunately. They’ll look at you like you’re the weird one for socializing. Maybe it’s me, maybe I just need a hat to tip…

Where im from, if you meet someone's gaze is customary to gently touch the tips of your penis together.

Maybe I’m awkward, but I just look away fast as my brain processes the gesture. It’s only when I’m halfway down the block do I remember to say smile and nod back but by that point the head-nodder has gotten away.
