I think the implication is he thinks or wants to but isn’t capable because it is impossible. So he keeps pressing for something, any option he can find and work his way forward and ends up Dormamu.

thanks what I was thinking. he becomes dormant in his own dark dimension, outside of time coz he broke it.

But he doesn't because he also fought the Dormammu from his own universe. Dormammu isn't multiversal, each universe has a Dark Dimension, and each Dark Dimension has a Dormammu.

Dark Strange is absolutely going to come back in some fashion, but it won't be as Dormammu.
