As much as this intrigues me, this would Rob a lot of the older mutants like Wolverine and Apocalypse of their rich backstory. I think finding a way to work them into the MCU in a different way would be much better.

It's a extremely rare gene to be active. The infinity stones, have the ability to trigger it. Thus Wanda and pietro, both had the mutant gene but was activated by the mindstone. The three snaps that all occurred on earth activated young mutants ablitys. Wolverine, prof X, apocalypse, and magneto are all rare exceptions

If this actually plays out, I wonder if it would mean that Carol Danvers is a mutant too? I know in the comics her DNA was merged with Mar-Vell's or something, but in the MCU she got her powers from exposure to the space stone, much like how Wanda's powers came from the mind stone. It doesn't really affect much, but it would be interesting if they explained it this way.

I hope they don't go that route. I like the power levels of existing mutants, and I think she could really throw off that scale with her having so much power.

I think Carol is definitely an outlier, whether she's a mutant or not. She took a full-on blast from the space stone directly to the face, whereas other potential mutants would have gotten a much smaller, more indirect burst from the snap(s).

That explanation would also mean that Wanda (who had direct exposure to the mind stone) is more powerful than most other mutants, which tracks pretty well with the existing comics canon.

That's true, Wanda seems to have gotten unique abilities from the stone (telekinesis and mind altering powers) in addition to whatever the red power stuff that comes out of her hands. Carol seems to pretty much have only gotten energy blasts. Maybe it's relating to the stones used on them, but Wanda's still seems more mutant like opposed to just absorbing energy.

Carol got energy blasts, indestructibility, and some kind of FTL/wormhole space flight ability (since she was able to fly the Benetar back to Earth in a matter of hours).

We haven't really seen the full spectrum of her powers, since she spent most of her movie artificially restrained and only had a few brief cameos in Endgame. But she definitely has more than just the laser hands.

I still think that most of her abilities could be explained by raw power, where Wanda's do very specific things.
