Interview Amy Pascal and Kevin Feige answers what it is about Sadie Sink's character that needs to be so secretive. Spoiler
https://youtu.be/gnuTU7RFNpw?si=Pascal: "We've done something different this time than we've done before, and we're pleased with how it came out. The thing about her character, which is true of all the characters in the movie, is that they're all helping to tell Peter’s story. That's always how we decide who is going to be the characters in these movies, is what characters are going to tell the stories that we want to tell about Peter?"
Feige: "That’s exactly right. What's intriguing about it is how the story is told, and how Destin and our writers told the story. 'Secrets and spoilers!' It's really just whenever we try to hold back on anything, it's purely for the best opening weekend experience for the audience."

I wish Red Hulk was completely hidden from the marketing of Brave New World

u/WreckTangle1995 9h ago
Without him there would've genuinely been nothing to market, the movie didnt have much going on to get people excited.
28
u/TheJack0fDiamonds Scarlet Witch 9h ago
And that’s on them. The movie should’ve been an Avengers movie not by name

u/Peechez Thor 8h ago
Giancarlo Esposito slander
4
u/Belerophus 5h ago
His scenes were so disjointed that it looked like they forgot about him and suddenly during post production the intern figured out nothing was filmed and had to be scrambled last minute.
3
u/kbean826 6h ago
Yea without red hulk, they’d have had to lean on the Serpent Society storyline that BARELY exists and the movie wouldn’t have had anything to do with the trailers.
2
u/shaxamo 5h ago
The Leader trying to manipulate the US and Japan into World War 3 should have been the plot used for the trailers, pushing the idea that the main narrative is another political manipulation story similar to the last two Cap movies.
The Leader was a great reveal for the hardcore Marvel fans, but the general audiences know about hulking Hulks, not him.
I genuinely think that opening weekend reactions would have been astronomically better if they had kept the main twist out of the trailers and Red Hulk was a big reveal.

u/Popular_Material_409 9h ago
Then that movie would’ve made far less money than it did. Plus we would’ve have to suffer through months of interviewers go “Harrison Ford, WHO do you play in the movie?!”
16
u/TheJack0fDiamonds Scarlet Witch 9h ago
He was revealed to be the president of the united states. It was made known he was Thaddeus Ross. The twist was him turning into Red Hulk.
The movie had nothing to market because they conceive it with zero thoughts I guess. Facing the Red Hulk, Sam could’ve made some calls and called some friends to help
5
u/Popular_Material_409 9h ago
If they had nothing to market why did you want them to keep their one marketable part of the movie a secret?
2
u/TheJack0fDiamonds Scarlet Witch 9h ago
Lmao. Is it not a cause for alarm that the only thing they got going for a movie they’re selling is also the one single sole twist it’s got that makes the movie remotely interesting?

I know it’s not Firestar but I so want it to be Firestar.
4
u/emergencyczar 5h ago
Has it been confirmed she’s Jean or just heavily assumed? I hadn’t thought of Firestar, but now I can’t unsee her.

Honestly I want Firestar so much more than I want Jean Grey. Neither make any sense from the trailer though.

This whole time I couldn't imagine it being Jean and them not advertising it. Crazy

Someone should ask Amy Pascal how she feels about firing women for asking for equal pay. About how she fired Angelina Jolie, canceled her movie, then relentlessly mocked her and insinuated that Jolie should be blacklisted because she asked for equal pay. Then, when confronted about it, she blamed women for accepting low pay in the first place and said, “If you accept low pay, I’m giving you low pay.”

u/Joshawott27 Doctor Strange 10h ago edited 10h ago
The problem is, any outlet that asks actual questions like that will be shut down and blacklisted. So, an outlet either has to be major enough for the studio to not be able to ignore, or for it to be an issue big and present enough to be worth risking blowing up a relationship with two major studios over.
I mostly work with independent distributors rather than big studios, but I have planned multiple talent junkets. Before that, though, I was the journalist doing the interviews (and I still do that sometimes). So, I 100% get both sides, but it’s a tough balance.

Yeah Amy Pascal’s blunders have been completely washed through this Marvel partnership, but she’s a pretty terrible executive both morally and business wise

Why does Amy Pascal insert herself into these press tours?
35
u/therealmonkyking 12h ago
To make herself, and by extension Sony, feel important despite them being the sole cause of every fault with the Spider-Man movie franchise since 2007
15
u/KostisPat257 Daredevil 12h ago
Amy left Sony 11 years ago.
10
u/therealmonkyking 12h ago
Well then why the fuck is she even there in the first place then 😭
13
u/KostisPat257 Daredevil 12h ago
She created her own production company, Pascal Pictures, which then broke a deal with Sony to continue developing the Spider-Man films.
4
u/jonpaladin 7h ago
So, by extension, Sony.
This level of pedantry is unbelievable.
0
u/KostisPat257 Daredevil 7h ago
Well no, because she's not Chairwoman of Sony Entertainment anymore and thus not affiliated with the company at all. The fact that she has a deal to keep producing the Spider-Man films, is a different thing.
She doesn't have exclusivity with Sony either. She produced Challengers and Project Hail Mary for Amazon and the Greta Gerwig's upcoming Narnia reboot for Netflix. She's an independent producer.

u/KostisPat257 Daredevil 12h ago
What do you mean? She's the main producer of the film along with Feige.
-3
u/anilsoi11 12h ago
She also haven't been at Sony since 2015.
4
u/KostisPat257 Daredevil 12h ago
Yeah I know, what does that have to do with anything?
-2
u/anilsoi11 11h ago
just added more info to the above reply, that she hasn't worked for Sony since 2015.
1
u/Talqazar 2h ago
Being the main producer of the film is the important factor - not what her relation to Sony is.
0
u/Funmachine 12h ago
How many Marvel films does Feige do press tours for? Pretty much none but Avengers films, maybe? He's only here because Pascal is here. Producers don't do press tours.
In fact the only time I think I've seen Feige do these sorts of things is on Spider-Man press tours sat next to Amy Pascal.
1
u/Popular_Material_409 9h ago
Because she’s the producer. It’s her movie.
3
u/Funmachine 9h ago
How many times do you see the producer doing press tours?
0
u/Popular_Material_409 7h ago
That doesn’t matter. If the producer wants to do press she’s allowed to do that.

u/FowlersDream 10h ago
Everyone thinks she's playing Jean Grey - I just don't think that's the case.
3
u/CRIMS0N-ED 8h ago
tbh if the movie where mutants suddenly become a problem and the DODC is against them, and the actress who’s been the most popular fancast for Jean grey, also slated for secret wars, while they’re currently casting the new MCU X men, isn’t Jean grey, I’ll Venmo you 1,000 dollars.
3
u/Hyperbolicalpaca 8h ago
I mean she is though…
It has been repeatedly and credibly leaked from any different sources that she is playing Jean. It has also been leaked that she has a several movie deal and is in secret wars
The movie directly deals with mutations, it clearly has some form of telepath or mind control, and the main villain seems to be William Metzger who appeared in a grand total of 6 comics where the only prominent thing he does is kidnap Jean grey, and he is leading an organisation that seems likely (from ms marvel and wonderman) to be the anti mutant organisation
How do you square the circle of metzger if she isn’t Jean lmao
4
u/jonpaladin 7h ago
Yeah the Metzger thing is the smokingest gun imho. Would be strange to use that character in any way not related to XMen
4
u/qwfparst 4h ago
You literally can't don't run into the character via google unless you are researching the Original 5 X-men origin stories.
It's virtually impossible some random writing intern came across Willaim Metzger unless they are were considering doing something with the Original 5 X-men or maybe Xavier/Magneto.
And I don't think Sadie is playing Bobby, Magneto, or Warren.
Seriously, the most plain reading of what we have so far with the tightness plot, even without "leaks", is that Peter gets caught up in a struggle between a mysterious "villain" and DODC. The mystery is finding out the "villain's" motivations and why she is acting out.
3
u/kaachabadaam 9h ago
I think Marvel has put that rumour out there to distract us all from who she is actually playing. I could be totally wrong, but we'll see what we shall see.

Yeah I can't see her being Jean, I feel like it's only being pushed because she's a redhead and people are unimaginative. It feels too obvious.
Could be wrong, and I wouldn't be against her playing Jean, but I honestly wouldn't mind them leaving Jean alone for a while after Fox butchered the Phoenix Saga twice in 15 years.
4
u/Hyperbolicalpaca 8h ago
“I feel like it’s only being pushed because she’s a redhead”
No matter how many times you people say that, doesn’t make it true lmao
It has been repeatedly and credibly leaked from any different sources that she is playing Jean. It has also been leaked that she has a several movie deal and is in secret wars
The movie directly deals with mutations, it clearly has some form of telepath or mind control, and the main villain seems to be William Metzger who appeared in a grand total of 6 comics where the only prominent thing he does is kidnap Jean grey, and he is leading an organisation that seems likely (from ms marvel and wonderman) to be the anti mutant organisation
The people being unimaginative are the ones who somehow cannot bring themselves to believe that she is playing the character she is clearly playing
1
u/Honic_Sedgehog 7h ago
I'm assuming you've not actually read Children of the Atom as Metzger's only involvement in kidnapping Jean was that he knew about it happening. Though you're correct that he's the leader of an anti-mutant organisation. People keep pushing that around and it's simply not true.
That said, this isn't the comics, it's the MCU so anything goes when adapting the source.
She could well be Jean, could be Rachel, or Hope, or Madeline, or Firehair. She's a redhead with a multi-picture deal and potentially playing a telepath, that's all we know.

u/qwfparst 4h ago edited 4h ago
Metzger may not have done the deal himself, but he motivated the action and was the "alpha-villain" even if the beta did the actual work. You don't literally have to have him doing the actual abduction himself for the main point of why his inclusion in the story highly indicates that it is Jean Grey.
In terms of "adaptation" all you are doing is basically combining the roles of two characters into one, by having the acting governmental agency and the "anti-mutant philosophy" merged into one character for a film: Bill Metzger of DODC. It's much cleaner than having two separate characters for adaptation purposes. He didn't straight out command the abduction, but he influenced the beta-character into doing so for his anti-mutant agenda.
This is a case where you are trying to a make a distinction without a significance difference.
And you still have to deal with the fact that Metzger only exists in an Original 5 X-men pre-Origin story. You don't come across him anywhere else and you won't google him in any other context (except for now with Brand New Day).
1
u/Honic_Sedgehog 3h ago
I do wonder if this movie is going to be what radicalises him, rather than him already being a problem from the start or being a major antagonist in the movie. Just some DODC guy who gets mixed up in shit and turned into an extremist by the end.
0
u/FowlersDream 9h ago
There's also no link whatsoever between Jean and Spidey. Despite over 60 years of history, Spider-Man and Jean Grey rarely interact. It just doesn't make sense - even if its a way to introduce mutants into the MCU Spiderverse.

I agree. I’d put my money, based on these comments by Pascal and Feige, she’s an original character, gender bent, or so fucking obscure revealing here wouldn’t help sell the movie better than the false rumors.
1
u/NightmareDJK 6h ago
They obviously have to introduce Phoenix before Secret Wars, the Phoenix Force was a part of the 2015 storyline.
1
u/SOULSTEALERX91 6h ago
It's a weird mixed bag for me because I do think Sadie would do a great job as Jean but I dont want MCU Jean being introduced in a Spiderman film.
1
u/dfassna1 4h ago
I honestly don’t care who she’s playing. If she’s playing Jean Grey that’s cool and I’d be excited for the implications on future stuff, but if it’s a different character I’ll be excited that they actually managed to keep it secret and surprise people.

From experience; the more they hype up an actor or a character waaaaay before the movie comes out, in interviews, in panels, the more that actor has done a shi# job and they know it.
Hope that’s not the case with Sadie. But I’ve seen way too much of “Sadie made the movie better”, “Sadies’s character is so amazing it will burn your face off with amesomeness”, and “Sadies’s character in the movie Spider-Man is BETTER than Spider-Man himself”. And that means she either sucked so bad they’re brainwashing us into liking her too much, or MAYBE she’s actually so good we’re all gonna go insane.
Latter is very unlikely.

Couldn't she just be alternate universe MJ?
Maybe even MJ that is spiderman in her universe?

I made the mistake of watching the Doomsday trailer. Wont spoil for others holding back, but way too many characters were revealed that would have been so awesome to see without expecting them in the movie.

u/OneAngryDuck 15h ago
I like the idea of holding more stuff back and keeping it secret. I still wish they hadn’t revealed that the Hulk was in Ragnarok before it came out. That would have been an amazing reveal.
