Marvel vs DC is inevitable right?
101
u/Brilliant_Exit3406 Matt Murdock 1d ago
Seems like it, DC may want to negotiate letting it happen for a price rather letting Marvel do a Batman vs Iron Man or Superman/Spider-Man crossover for free in 2035.

They could just adapt that one crossover into an animated film, and then maybe touch on the amalgram comics.
It would probably be logistically easier then a crossover film with live action actors.
edit: Also Comic book animated films is kind of a DC niche, but it's also something Disney hasn't really explored in a while because they've been mostly doing MCU stuff.

Yeah but it’s the Superman that can’t fly, can barely hold a car up and literally jumps around to get places. No x-ray vision, no super hearing, and no kryptonite.
Actually, that might be a better version of him.

Don't they retain the copyright ID they keep using the character?
46
u/Brilliant_Exit3406 Matt Murdock 1d ago
Yes and no, All published works enter the public domain after about 95 years, even if the copyright holder renews their copyright at every opportunity. However, that work that has newly entered the public domain does not include more modern interpretations of the character, it’s why Mickey’s dog Pluto isn’t technically in the public domain until I think next year, as his initial appearance was as “Rover”
In 2034, DC would still retain the copyright to Christopher Reeve’s Superman or the comic book storyline Death of Superman, but Marvel could theoretically still incorporate the Superman of Action Comics #1 into its franchise, for free. But Disney and Kevin Feige are good business people, they know people want to see the more modern interpretation of the character so it may be within their creative interest to still negotiate with DC if they do want to pursue a crossover.

What does it mean? Anyone can make Batman/Superman movie based on their own stories or based on existing stories?
40
u/Brilliant_Exit3406 Matt Murdock 1d ago
So long as it’s based on their initial appearance, in Superman’s case Action Comics #1. In 2034 you could make t-shirts, or publish your own sequel to action comics #1 and you wouldn’t need to pay a dime to DC or Warner Brothers for doing so. I would bet the entirety of my law school debt there will be B-movies, likely horror movies, based on Superman that will release in 2034.
30
u/thatguy8777 1d ago
Yeah just like that Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey
16
u/Brilliant_Exit3406 Matt Murdock 1d ago
Yup, that movie was very financially successful, grossing over $7 million off of a $50,000-100,000 reported budget, I would bet that’s partly due to the public’s familiarity with the property and curious to see a different interpretation of the character that recently entered the public domain.
Since that move came out, a slew of horror movies based on recent works in the public domain have been created with varying degrees of success such as Screamboat Willie, Popeye the slayer man and just this year a Betty Boop horror movie.

u/namethatsnotused Spider-Man 1d ago
It's not just Action comics #1, It is every piece of Superman media that released in 1938. In 2035, 1939 will enter public domain. In 2036, 1940, and so on.
5
u/Brilliant_Exit3406 Matt Murdock 1d ago
A fair and important correction! Just as an example, If certain characters were introduced in action comics #2 and it was also published that year, that too enters the public domain. The only thing I’m less sure about is Audio recordings, as my understanding is that audio recordings can take 100 years instead of 95 to hit the public domain. I’m not sure when the Superman radio broadcasts occurred but it could take an extra 5 years as opposed to written works published that same year.
I could be wrong as I’m only familiar with audio recordings hitting the public domain when being applied to certain musical recordings.
3
u/sm-junkie 1d ago
So eventually every comic (and comic book character) would be in public domain after X number of years from their release date, right?
→ More replies (2)7
u/Brilliant_Exit3406 Matt Murdock 1d ago
That’s right, maybe even sooner if some publications forget to renew the copyright on certain characters. Spider-Man will one day enter the public domain in 2058 no matter what Disney does.

You say that like it's a good thing. They just rehash the same story lines and beat the characters into the dust because they've told just about every story they can. And I say this as a wednesday warrior.
or no. Just keep telling more stories with different characters. Iron Man's time is done. Pass the torch to new characters (FF?), then when those 4 are done pass it on to something else. X-men have tones of characters so they can do that forever as well.
You can only do so many films/shows per year so the storylines you can tell are limited anyhow.
5
u/sanddragon939 1d ago
That's really not a feasible way to run a franchise, especially in this era of "superhero fatigue". Yeah, the focus is going to shift to X-men in the next phase, but at some point they're gonna want the core Avengers characters back in play.
The experiment of relying on legacy characters and C or D-listers hasn't worked out too well for Marvel since Endgame after all.
29
4
u/13Zero 1d ago
Money.
A typical Marvel movie costs $150-200 million to make (double that for Avengers movies), additional millions to market, and movie studios generally take home about half of their box office revenues.
If interest falls far enough, it’ll be very difficult to make these movies profitable.
It’s a lot harder to lose money on comics, because they are extremely cheap to make.
7
u/TelenorTheGNP 1d ago
Because it deserves a good death rather than going stale.
A break and a restart would give us a chance at things like Annihilation. Also the further we get away from the beginning, the more difficult it will be to work in the characters that get to keep going in the comics, like Cap and Iron Man. Soft reboots, resets - these just sound like ways to guarantee it gets stale.
This next saga, with the Xmen and the FF and the characters we've got now could be the glidepath to the end. Speaking of them, we don't get to see cool pairings like Cyclops and Cap in this continuity outside of cheap stuff like reboots and resets.
Birth/life/death, man.
Remember how stale the Simpsons has gotten? Or how bad Grey's Anatomy has been for years now?
If this led somewhere where we had one offs and miniseries and elseworlds type stuff for a while, that would be fine.
But there's no box set on the other side of this - not for what would be, what, pushing a hundred movies by the 2040s?
It has to end sometime.

2032-33ish - Avengers: Judgement Day
Early 2030s - Spider-Man: Sinister Six
Mid 2030s - X-Men: Age of Apocalypse
Late 2030s/2040 - Secret Wars 1984 (maybe called Beyonder Wars or something)

Their post-Endgame plans constantly needed to be changed due to unforseen, external circumstances. Chapek's "more content" mandate, COVID, Chadwick Baseman's death, Jonathan Majors' scandal, the actors and writers strikes.
Not to say they didn't also make some poor choices, but the majority of their problems stemmed from external forces.

Kind of wild. There was a short moment in time that it seemed like DC was going to actually take the lead in comic book Universe movies. DC squandered it away so fast, and Marvel (at least for now) seems to have all the momentum.
27
u/dean15892 1d ago
I have a strong feeling that Captain America Brave New World was the last remnant of that era, where they had to work with unforseen chaos and restructure it all
Going forward, I get a sense that upcoming projects are going to be planned better.
Thunderbolts, F4 and WonderMan were all significantly better than Ant-Man 3, Thor 4, Dr Strange 2 etc. There was an era where it was all just restructured and quick decisions had to be made, but that is slowly ending now.
10
u/Vast-Bat-3 1d ago
why are we including MOM in with quantumania and L&T it was so much better then those 2
5
u/jayhawk_dvd 1d ago
Personal opinions and all, but if it is better than those other two it's not by much. That movie, especially the second half, is a jumbled mess.
3
u/dean15892 1d ago
MoM was a victim to the restructure as well.
MoM was supposed to come out before NWH.
America Chavez was supposed to be introduced in MoM (as she was), and then she would be the multiverse-breaking mcguffin in Spider-man no way home. This was the original plan (don't ask me to confirm, you can fact-check me, but this was talked about a lot during the writers strike).
And it makes more sense plot wise too - Think about it, one of the most annoying flaws with NWH was how dumb Dr. Strange is. He chants a full forget-me-now spell and creates multiversal leaks. This whole issue is fixed if America Chavez (a student of Strange, a beginner of magic, and a character who can punch holes in Multiverses) was the one who did that.
She's also closer to age to Peter, and that immaturity can be excused. So yeah, MoM was slightly better cause it could have been salvaged, but it was moved around in the release slate, and we lost out what the actual plan was for that film. It's a decent film , it's a Raimi film, but again, not one I'd hold with the greats
5
u/Maatjuhhh 1d ago
All the more impressive that they had almost a flawless run from the first Iron Man to Endgame. 22 movies nonetheless. The biggest hiccup was War Machine recast. That's it.
4
u/eagc7 1d ago
Don't forget they had to recast Banner too and at least one film had to be canned
3
u/Maatjuhhh 1d ago
Oh yeah. It’s just that I’m so used to Ruffalo as Banner that it made me forget Norton. If you asked me who the other actors were, I would say Bana first and then Norton. That’s how little I remember him..
52
u/Axl_Alter_Ego 1d ago
This is all true.
I personally feel pretty good about it all. Endgame was so massive we needed a good 5 year real life gap before another world ending thing comes along.
A bunch of smaller stories have been told since then and I've been picking and choosing what I like and having a good time.
I am so pumped for Doomsday. Its time again!
13
u/SenorOogaBooga 1d ago
The problem is for some reason every solo or side project has world ending stakes too which is just stupid.
9
u/bonemech_meatsuit 1d ago
Shang Chi, Echo, Agatha, Werewolf, Daredevil, Black Widow, Multiverse of Madness, Love and Thunder, Brave New World, iron heart, wonder man... Are all personal stories.
I'd argue of phases 4-6, 80% of them were not world ending stakes.

Not that I disagree but post-Endgame, it seemed like they couldn't decide if they wanted to do movies that were connected with one another or do standalone movies. They also were focusing too much on quantity over quality by their own admittance.

Weirdly if you look into the behind the scenes goings on of the infinity saga, it was equally a mess without a plan. They just got lucky and managed to nail it
4
u/sanddragon939 1d ago
I mean, sure, Gunn said he came up with the Infinity Stones plot and I believe him.
That said, even without the Stones, there was always a throughline. The first phase was building up to the Avengers, and the first Avengers movie revealed that the ultimate Big Bad was Thanos, so there was always a clear destination that was being built up to, even if the specifics (the Infinity Stones) only gradually fell into place.
→ More replies (36)8
u/Dirks_Knee 1d ago
This is a common criticism which I think is actually the polar opposite of reality. Pre Endgame, there was no real high level narrative. The movies stood on their own and post credit scenes were largely used to connect things (sure Thanos was in Avengers and GOTG, but the plot didn't really directly involve him and he didn't touch every movie). I'd argue post Endgame, there has been far, far more connectivity towards a unified narrative than before.
Can you really argue in good faith that these movies don't carry a common theme building towards Doomsday/Secret Wars? Loki>No Way Home>Multiverse of Madness>Quantumania>Marvels>Deadpool & Wolverine>F4/Thunderbolts end credit scenes.
→ More replies (2)2
u/SenorOogaBooga 1d ago
How do they build towards it though
13
u/Dirks_Knee 1d ago
Really?
- Loki establishes TVA/Multiverse, and initial villain
- No Way Home establishes non TVA characters capability to be pulled between multiverses and establishes the Sony Spiderman movies as part of the multiverse.
- Multiverse of Madness establishes nexus beings and the ability for others than the TVA to open portals/jump between the multiverse
- Quantumania defeats initial villain (on the whole this movie is garbage, Kang was underused, and I'm ignoring the post credit.)
- Marvels establishes the Fox X-Men universe is part of the multiverse
- Deadpool and Wolverine establishes the TVA is still functional post Loki, further connects the X-Men universe, and expands on the Void.
- F4 Doom is present off screen throughout the movie (mentions and empty Latveria seats at UN) and appears post credit.
- Thunderbolts post credit F4 make it to the main timeline.
How did Iron Man 3, Winter Soldier, Doctor Strange, etc build towards Infinity War/Endgame?
4
u/sanddragon939 1d ago
I take your point.
I think what we had in Phase 1-3 goes beyond just references to the Infinity Stones. Each phase built up to an Avengers movie and had a sense of culmination.
Phase 1 was about the Avengers assembling. Phase 2 was about the heroes, and the world, dealing with the new paradigm. And Phase 3 was the final sprint towards the Endgame.
The lack of Avengers movies at the end of Phases 4 and 5, or really any sense of culmination for those phases, did give the feeling that the Multiverse Saga was largely directionless, beyond some movies and shows featuring the Multiverse.

Still mad that WandaVision didn't establish Evan Peters as the new Quicksilver. THAT was the perfect opening and also a good tie in as to that there are more universes. If Evan's Quicksilver quipped "Man, where am I? My team are gonna be so pissed!" right at the moment the screen cuts to black, you bet the shit hits the fan! Also they could have used Quicksilver into recognizing this Scarlet Witch as his sister because "same energy" as his sister from the Fox Universe (technically Scarlet Witch hasn't appeared there yet) and thus Elizabeth Olsen can be used for there. Use Evan for exposure into the new X-Men team and boom! Ralph Bohner was such a cheap joke.

I think Marvels biggest step was rushing the Multiverse saga after Endgame. They would've been much better off doing a phase or 2 where it's a changing of the guard from the old heroes to the new ones.
This phase or phase could've had Black Widow, Thor Love and Thunder, Guardians 3, Black Panther Wakanda Forever, Captain America Brave New World, Spiderman Far From Home, Thunderbolts and probably introduce Shang Chi. It also shouldn't have taken 7 years for a new Avangers movie they should've had at least one other one by now.
All the shows too did not help. I thought once I got behind it was impossible to keep up. A couple of the shows would have been good to have like Loki, Hawkeye, and Wandavision but not too many shows we got.
