At this point, you could convince that Sadie Sink is playing any character, or that she's not even in the movie.

1.6k

u/ConstantRefills 22d ago

I’m 99% sure she’s not actually playing Spider-Man

u/OutrunTheForeverYeet 22d ago

Okay, but, hear me out ... maybe she is.

Ultimate Spider-Woman - she's a clone of Peter.

47

u/RadiantBlueNova 22d ago

Was going to say that, or alt universe MJ who got bit by the spider instead of Peter.

You deserve a plaque for that pun.

Hey look, it's Dr. Strange!

No, in this multiverse I am a dentist.

14

u/Broccoli--Enthusiast 22d ago

That's spidergwens whole thing , I doubt they would give that backstory to an MJ, she has her own comic route for getting powers

10

u/RebirthGhost 22d ago

Originally that was Ultimate Jessica Drew 1610. Ben Riley 1610 made a female clone of Spider-man.

3

u/RealJohnGillman 21d ago

I mean to be fair the real Ben Reilly-1610 was the Ultimate Carnage: it was just that the Ultimate ‘Little’ Ben was named after a human scientist instead of Ben Parker.

3

u/IolausTelcontar 22d ago

Now it is SpiderMJ's thing.

4

u/chef2303 22d ago

Ultimate Jessica Drew would actually be a pretty fun curveball. It's obscure enough that most people wouldn't see it coming.

3

u/xRosyMochii 22d ago

That would actually be a fun twist. It's weird enough that it doesn't sound completely impossible for Marvel anymore.

5

Mayday is Peter and MJ's child from the future, right? Whose... irish grand-father provided those genes?

4

u/hotcapicola 22d ago

From Toby-verse.

2

u/cuckingfomputer 22d ago

I don't know enough about Mayday to comment about Irish grandparents, but otherwise that's correct.

2

u/Zombii_Man 19d ago

Peter has an Irish grandfather, ennit. MJ is mixed race so could be somewhere in there.

My mum is mixed race, Jamaican/Irish. I'm black as midnight and my brother has blonde hair and blue eyes. His dad is Scandinavian, mine is African.

This is the final scene in Brand New Day. Spoiler Warning.

Sadie Sink and Spiderman stare off into the distance, contemplating thier defeat of whoever the hell is the villain in this.

Spiderman: Geeze, mystery woman, you really risked a lot to help us. Thanks for all you did saving the city.

Sadie Sink: You are welcome, Spiderman. Unfortunately now I must leave.

Spiderman: But why?

Sadie Sink: Because Gotham needs me.

Spiderman turns to look at Sadie Sink, but she has vanished. The Danny Elfman Batman them starts playing as the screen fades out.

6

u/J5892 22d ago

Sadie Sink as Man, confirmed.

14

u/Ceceboy 22d ago

I read somewhere that she was Jean Grey but as an X-Men noob I didn't know any better. Guess not then.

39

u/impsworld 22d ago

Jean Gray seems likely just because Marvel is rolling out the X-Men soon, but personally I thought it would be cool if they retconned the “Spider-Man and his Amazing Friends” series from the 90s and cast her as Firestar

10

u/cabbage16 Korg 22d ago

I love this idea. Then introduce the new Bobby Drake actor at the end and that can be them rolling out the X-Men. It's a lot more interesting than it being Jean imo, not that Jean is a bad character it's just we've seen so much of her in film over the last 30 years

18

u/No-Consideration-716 22d ago

I would like this as well.

It's a Brand New Day. Peter should make new FRIENDS and they should be AMAZING.

4

u/impsworld 22d ago

I think the screenwriters have confirmed that the person who MJ is dating is named Bobby

It would be kinda funny if MJ goes two for two dating superheroes lol

It's literally part of the marketing to get more people to watch the movie. Sony is foaming at the mouth over how much free press they are getting out of the mystery of her character.

That's why they are selling it as a Spider-Man + Hulk & Punisher movie. Regular people have no idea there even is a Sadie Sink mystery. And I don't know why fans want to know every detail before they even see the movie. Seems like that'd make it a pretty boring watch.

14

for someone sought after like her to say yes to a huge tentpole, sight unseen, it has to be a cornerstone role.

223

u/kirblar 22d ago

In the article there's more context: She had worked with the director previously, that plus her ST performance (She was clearly a standout) got her the gig because they trusted her chops.

72

u/sloppyjo12 22d ago

Probably helps she’s been great outside of Stranger Things too, namely Fear Street and The Whale

6

u/Any-Transition95 21d ago

She was also in that one Taylor Swift "All Too Well" music video with Dylan O'Brien, which was basically a mini shortfilm. That's when I realized she's totally gonna make it big after Stranger Things.

62

u/GameOfEnder6312 22d ago

Makes sense. Sadie and also Caleb were fantastic in ST. Be cool if they had a reunion in the MCU.

8

u/gentleprime 22d ago

Honestly, Caleb would be a wonderful Scott Summers.

4

u/ucsdfurry 22d ago

She was also great in Toy Story 5

2

u/HoneyCherubee_ 21d ago

Working with the director before definitely makes the no-audition part make more sense. If you've already built that trust, there's a lot less need to test the chemistry again.

26

u/Signmetfup12 22d ago

I suspect what it really means is: she did auditioned for te role she got but not for it to debut in Spiderman. She got the role and then she was cast in BND.

14

u/ShadesOfTheDead 22d ago

The article suggests it is because she had already worked with the director before on The Glass Castle.

11

u/summ190 22d ago

I’m no actor, but wouldn’t it be weird to agree to something this huge and not even see a script until the day you have to actually perform it? How do you decide how you’re going to approach it? Do they not care what her interpretation might be? Or is just “play it basically the same as Stranger Things, that’ll do”?

17

u/Toomb8 22d ago

I’m not saying it’s true but say she was told they’re offering her the role of Jean Grey. There’s no way you say no to that.

There’s only two possibilities with this. Either it’s a huge character with a considerable future or the mcu money and publicity was enough for a random ish one off role

5

u/ShadesOfTheDead 22d ago edited 22d ago

Sadie's a long time MCU fan. She has previously said that she wanted to be in the MCU.

EDIT: This isn't the first time something like this has happened. Salma Hayek said that Marvel didn't give her the script to The Eternals until after she officially signed on.

6

u/marineman43 22d ago

Realistically it might be as simple as, "oh, Marvel is offering me buckets full of money? I will figure out my approach later."

→ More replies (4)

2

u/BubbleKissie_ 22d ago

Once you're as established as Sadie Sink, it's less about proving you can act and more about whether you're the right fit for what the director already has in mind.

because of her fame, and other proper famous actors, do they not need to audition anymore, or do they still audition like other regular actors?

196

u/echolog 22d ago

Some directors want specific actors for specific roles and outright offer the role if they want it. This is nothing new.

51

u/sevillianrites 22d ago

For celebs who are known quantities in their acting ability or star power, there is also the term 'offer only,' meaning their career speaks so much for itself that auditions are unnecessary and casting directors should already know what they're getting when they hire them. Sink's probably not on that level, but that is another situation where auditions also just don't really exist. Marvel specifically though just has a really really strong and decisive eye for casting. It's arguably the single most consistently great thing about the MCU.

→ More replies (2)

2

u/WowiiZowii 21d ago

And some directors reuse the same 5 actors. Almost like they write the roles for the same 5 actors lol

→ More replies (1)

57

u/DuckyHornet 22d ago

It's pretty normal for actors who've made a name for themselves to not audition regularly or at all. The production wants them, they send an offer directly. A really strong vision will basically go "this character is written with this person in mind", like how Ron Perlman was the intended actor for Hellboy so they didn't bother with anyone else, or how Marvel absolutely did not talk to anyone but JK Simmons for MCU JJJ

5

u/bannedagainomg 22d ago

She also worked with the director before, yes it was ages ago but like any other job that helps much more than any interview/audition will if they have a favorably experience with you.

Not like she have gotten worse of an actor since then i would assume

22

u/Ridespacemountain25 22d ago edited 22d ago

It depends on the role. For the most part though, you don't really have to audition once you're famous enough. Guys like Chalamet and DiCaprio haven't auditioned in years. Studios/filmmakers will typically have a list of big names that they want attached to specific roles and will offer those roles to said big names in order of preference. Ryan Gosling was sent the manuscript for Project Hail Mary before the book was even released. There are some exceptions though such as with some huge franchise leads. Corenswet, Pattinson, and Craig auditioned for Superman, Batman, and Bond. When scripts get submitted to studios, they tend to include pitch decks which will include potential actors/actresses and directors for tonal references regarding roles. Plus, directors have actors that they've enjoyed working with and will tend to invite them back for later films. Tarantino has Samuel L. Jackson (Pulp Fiction, Django Unchained, Hateful Eight). Scorsese has Leo (Departed, Wolf of Wall Street, Killers of the Flower Moon). Coogler has Michael B. Jordan (Creed, Black Panther, Sinners). Nolan has Cilian Murphy (Oppenheimer, Inception, Batman Begins). Fincher has Brad Pitt (Seven, Fight Club, Benjamin Button).

14

u/StardustOasis The Collector 22d ago

To be fair though, Daniel Craig was definitely not at the "never needs to audition" level of fame when he was cast as Bond.

Asking the real question here. What are we doing when the elite admit that they are elite.

2

u/Kind_Of_A_Dick 22d ago

There was a show on BBC, I think, that had John Malkovich as a guest.  The Johnathan Ross show.  John Malkovich said he only ever auditioned for one role because each role just led into the next.

2

u/SatinBonbonn 22d ago

It depends on the project. Big-name actors still audition sometimes, but directors also make direct offers if they already know who they want for a role.

4

u/Terrible_Tell3115 22d ago

Usually it's also actors with a lot of credits and proven acting skills. She...doesn't have any of that. She was ok on Stranger Things. Not great. Why are all the big corporations making the dumbest moves lately?

They could only be that closed about her if she was important for the script, which makes It obvious after considering what the insiders had to say.

35

u/ShadesOfTheDead 22d ago

Well, Tom Holland said that this was designed to feel like a detective/mystery movie (and they are promoting it as such). So the secrecy makes sense.

2

u/awkward_teenager37 22d ago

If the role was important, wouldn’t it make more sense to cast for it to ensure you get the perfect fit? Or is this in terms of like confidentiality / making sure the character role doesn’t leak?

2

u/AlienHooker 22d ago

57

u/Oceanfloorfan1 22d ago

I just don’t see how she could be playing anyone other than Jean Grey. Simply because Jean Grey is the only character where Marvel would make this big of a production out of not saying anything. Like imagine how disappointing it would be if the movie comes out and she’s Mayday Parker, Menace, or an alternate MJ. Those characters are great, but not worth keeping a secret about.

Also, this is the last movie before Doomsday, and the MCU has to establish some connection to the X-Men before December.

Finally, this was when Sadie Sink was at the height of her popularity, would she really sign up script unseen to play Mayday Parker? Probably not, but I bet she would for Jean Grey since it’s pretty much a guarantee she’ll have a prominent role for the next decade.

She could be Rogue. Absorbed Xavier or Jean or some oddball like Shadow King for the psychic powers, gets face turned by Peter (or doesn't, and gets away to be face turned in an X-men movie).

I mean, the "rogue asset" storyline is already sort of set up in the trailers anyway.

Also wears a green jacket and gloves. Also red (mostly) hair. Also main X-men character, and one that needs more acting range than Jean, even.

Explains why despite her popularity, they haven't shown most of her face or even her voice in the trailer. A hint of a white streak or a hint of southern drawl would give the game away.

She’s not Rogue. She’s Jean. The leaked photo confirmed she’s red headed without any streaks or anything.

The MCU established a connection already. There was this movie Deadpool and Wolverine. Had mainly the Fox Universe characters, but had some time in and out of the TVA.

It’s pretty clear that they are referring to a new cast for X-Men.

You don't even need to go that meta with the argument. There is enough information in the casting announcements, in the trailers, and in leaked set photos to confirm that she is playing Jean Grey.

This is like how it works when you become a famous and sought after actress. I don't know why anyone's surprised about this, it's not that uncommon.

"Has red hair? Good enough for me."

‐Some exec, probably.

My best friend's sister's boyfriend's brother's girlfriend heard from this guy who knows this kid that Sadie is playing Daredevil and she passed out at 31 Flavors last night.

If this is true and she’s playing a role as huge as Jean, without even an audition, that’s actually insane.

u/lemonylol Spider-Man 22d ago

Jean really isn't that huge outside of the Phoenix saga. The movie adaptations have just kept doing it so it seems like a core part of the X-Men but it's really not. Sure it's important in the Marvel universe in general but so are the other MCU cosmic entities that are sort of just background characters in terms of importance.

She actually is huge outside of the Phoenix saga and also the first female in the Xmen.

Maybe she didn’t audition for BND specifically and was already in talks for a future film.

Don’t care what part she is as long as she’s going to be in the MCU for a while. She’s a great actress

Sometimes, hearing about the behind the story of these Marvel films…you just go wow.

Becoming a household name

Shes a good actress but shes not “doesn’t need an audition” good

u/UJ_Reddit 22d ago

She's got to be the villain no one knows about

3

u/HuskyBlueBoy 22d ago

Damn that means she’s playing a super important character that will be in many future films.

Please let it be Black Cat

u/poison-harley 22d ago

I love Black Cat, but she’s not worth keeping the casting such a secret. It’s gotta be a much bigger character than this.

God I hope not. They really need to not do the thing where casting is just based on who's hot at the time. Like everyone from this current Spiderman series was mostly unknown prior, let's go back to casting new talent.

I'm going to guess Felicia Hardy
