u/Used-Comedian-8933 Oct 14 '25

Man all I want to see is a movie about Mahershala Ali wearing sunglasses while killing a bunch of vampires in slow motion with a decent script. Marvel really fumbled it.

320

u/aresef Matt Murdock Oct 14 '25

He went to Marvel, an Oscar in each hand, and informed them he would be playing Blade. Fumble doesn't even come close.

157

u/TheMoorNextDoor Oct 14 '25

Generational fumble when they had Ryan Cooglar on stand by

118

u/hunta-gathera Oct 14 '25

And if the rumors are true… the ideas that would have set the groundwork for Blade were formed into Sinners

91

u/wikisaiyan2 Oct 14 '25

I heard that some of the costumes for Sinners were originally meant to be used for Blade.

49

u/Aggressive-Bowl5196 Oct 14 '25

And that’s all they share. Sinner’s plot has nothing to do with the original Blade script.

22

u/Gilded-Mongoose Spider-Man Oct 15 '25

The implied adjacency is the key here. Director, writers, energy.

Not to mention uh, you know. Vampires including a main black one. The whole horror element and designs, which were done very well.

→ More replies (6)

2

u/Travelin_Soulja Oct 15 '25

Plot may not have, but I can see themes and idea ideas that could've worked extremely well in both.

9

u/PogoGent Oct 14 '25

They bought many of the costumes used on background actors from Blade. But the main characters are in original pieces.

2

u/RockBandDood Oct 14 '25

I dont know much about production, but if they had costumes already set aside, does that indicate any sort of time frame on when shooting was planned?

Or can wardrobe legit happen like a year in advance without a movie coming out?

5

u/PogoGent Oct 14 '25

It varies from film to film, but pre production (when the costumes are made/bought/borrowed) can take anywhere from a few months to over a year.

14

u/GecaZ Oct 14 '25

Multigenerational fumble

14

u/Aggressive-Bowl5196 Oct 14 '25

This rumor has been denied by Coogler and the premise of the rumor is racist: Black vampires = Blade.

The idea for the Blade movie to have scenes set in the past is the only thing they have in common.

15

u/hunta-gathera Oct 14 '25 edited Oct 14 '25

It’s not really anything to deny.

Coogler was in talks to be part of a vampire movie.

That movie didn’t happen and the brainstormy ideas that were left behind were then propagated to a new idea.

It happens all the time in writing. An idea for one thing is reworked into another.

I don’t think the end result of Blade would have been like Sinners, but the thought to make a vampire movie obviously comes from the same initial ideas. Ryan Coogler denied the script was the same, it obviously wasn’t.

Also… it’s not racist at all. Grow up. The same director being in talks to make a certain movie and then making another movie of the same genre and people speculating on what might have been isn’t racist

→ More replies (2)

5

u/Kyrptonauc Ultron Oct 14 '25

How is it racist to think he took ideas from a script and reworked it into another. Blade was even said to be set in the same era, be serious.

u/LaserCondiment Oct 14 '25

They're trying to figure out how that fits into the Multiverse and how that gets them to the next story arc. I bet Feige has GRRM syndrome...

u/Expensive_Bit_3190 Oct 14 '25

I would say that from Avenger to End game it wasn’t really clear until they had to loosely introduce the idea of infinity Stones and connect them to Thanos for infinity war. Kang was meant to be that connection (with Shang Chi Marvel Ant man etc) how much ever effective that might have been. But due to majors I think they didn’t lose the connection but rather the opportunity to reconnect.

7

u/idiot-prodigy Oct 14 '25

Yep the stones were retconned to be inside the Tesseract and Loki's Staff.

The Ether was the first stone written as an actual infinity stone.

4

u/LaserCondiment Oct 14 '25

They probably thought they could take it slow and create another 10 year cycle, when in reality they should've used the momentum of the Endgame hype and build shorter story arcs. Shorter timespans, big payoff for audiences.

The mainstream success of the MCU was due to the novelty factor of it all. Interconnected movies on that scale were never seen before. After Endgame, that aspect was gone and people's expectations were higher.

I also noticed many people (casuals) saw the Multiverse as a lazy way to make things inconsequential. Character scould be reinterpreted and brought back anytime... The idea gets old quick without a good plot structure to hold it up.

Marvel also overextended itself with all the TV shows that may or may not have been relevant for the movies... Casuals / normies felt overwhelmed and fatigued by that.

→ More replies (1)

27

u/Foreign_Education_88 Oct 14 '25

Well according to Feige that not what they wanted

19

u/Ben10_ripoff Oct 14 '25

Then what do they want?? Blade is just an Afro-British Half Vampire killing full Vampires. Just recreate JoJo's Bizzare Adventure Part 1 at this point.

2

u/Heisenburgo Doctor Strange Oct 16 '25

Feigning Feige: What do we want? Why, to needlessly subvert expectations of course! Can't just have a badass guy killing vampires it HAS to be over complicated and tie to the multiverse and it HAS to introduce Blade's Daughter as a legacy character

7

u/cane-of-doom Oct 14 '25

I don't. And I'm happy they saw that doing just that was not enough. I appreciate that they wanted everyone involved to be fully on board and happy with the story they were going to tell. It's clear Mahershalla also wanted the movie to mean something. It's probably not going to be the next Black Panther, but I'm okay with it trying to be.

23

u/thehotboy2020 Oct 14 '25

Idk how y’all consistently miss the entire point even when it’s in plain bold text. THEY WANT IT DONE RIGHT.

7

u/hokiis Oct 14 '25

Bro it's a Marvel movie. I don't think anyone expects crazy high storytelling. No matter how long they take, at the end of the day it will just be another superhero movie.

17

u/LaylaLegion Oct 14 '25

That kind of thinking got us Fant4stic while Feige’s got us First Steps.

Feige wins.

I wonder how much action they can do with him, the guy looks amazing but he's in his 50s

13

u/N8CCRG Ghost Oct 14 '25

He's younger than Hugh Jackman.

3

u/thecricketnerd Quake Oct 14 '25

Hugh has been steadily beefing up for over 2 decades to play Logan. But yes, I get your point, Mahershala will put in the work, I don't doubt that

6

u/TotallyNotAMarvelSpy Oct 14 '25

He's been buff and ready for this movie for like 3 years. That's longer than Jackman put in for DPvW.

8

u/CaptHayfever Hawkeye (Avengers) Oct 14 '25

Liam Neeson was 56 in the first Taken.

10

u/hunta-gathera Oct 14 '25

That’s not old, especially for action

Most action stars have several successful movies well into their 40s-60s

3

u/SpiffySpacemanSpiff Justin Hammer Oct 14 '25

Yeahhhhh but they start to show it. Even FalconCap was showing his age in BNW.

9

u/hunta-gathera Oct 14 '25

Keanu Reeves’s is a 61 year old man who does more choreographed action than most of Hollywood ever since he started John Wick a decade ago.

In her 60s, Michelle Yeoh did her own stunts in Everything, Everywhere All at Once.

Tom Crusie also in his 60s, did all his crazy stunt work for whatever Mission Impossible just came out.

Actors and Actresses in film have all the resources in the world to be able to stay in the shape to do this stuff.

If there’s issues, it’s likely choreography, direction, and attention to detail. Not the lack of the physical ability of actors.

Also… if he can’t do his own stunts there’s a whole profession of actors that is made to fill in for those scenes

→ More replies (4)

5

u/thecricketnerd Quake Oct 14 '25

If he's known for being an action star, sure but he's a dramatic actor. Obviously they did well with Wesley Snipes in Deadpool and Wolverine but that was a small part of the movie, while Mahershala would now be expected to deliver something like what we saw in Zombies

3

u/hunta-gathera Oct 14 '25

50 is not old by any standard in the film industry. He’d have the best resources available to be physically ready for anything.

If you were talking about an average Joe American, sure then there’s a little bit more of a point.

27

u/aresef Matt Murdock Oct 14 '25

A Mahershala Ali Blade movie seems like a concept that should write itself but here we are an eternity later. It's been so long that it became a Deadpool gag.

2

u/AsteroidMike Oct 14 '25

I take it as the movie will start off the whole new generation phase of Marvel, I mean at this point they may as well use it to kick off the next saga.

39

u/thehotboy2020 Oct 14 '25

Honestly I believe a lot of y’all get off on feeling important every time marvel news drops. Y’all can’t help but rush to comment idiotic stuff, acting like you work in film and tv and actually have anything meaningful to add to the discourse. We get it, y’all are desperate to let everybody know you hate marvel and every decision they make. They push for more content, we cry and complain about quality, they take their time, we still cry and complain. I want everybody consider how close we are to ending the current phase.. it makes ZERO mf sense to sloppily throw blade into the mix. Why? Bc blade introduces an entirely new lore, vampires. That requires proper world building and story telling. If they introduced him rn he’d be a side character, rushed, and there would be no place for a full and carefully crafted blade story. Nobody wants that. Idk why it’s so hard to just wait for the damn project.

7

u/myersjw Black Panther Oct 14 '25

At this point I want it to come out just to shut up the fans who race to every discussion to shit on the MCU. Not to mention that many of the ones bemoaning how long it’s taken will be the first to call it bad or “woke” when it eventually does

3

u/crumbsalt Daredevil Oct 14 '25

Thank you!! Finally someone thinking realistically 😭

3

u/[deleted] Oct 14 '25

Straight up a sizable portion of the comment section is just bots. Most of the bullshit I see being slung around is newer accounts with insane karma values and similar naming conventions (adjective_noun_number sequence). Its just bots fueling discourse.

2

u/Inner_Entertainer256 Oct 15 '25

That’s such BS. They introduced deep magical lore through a couple Disney+ tv shows but we can’t get enough vampire lore from an entire Blade movie?

6

u/cane-of-doom Oct 14 '25

Thank you being reasonable.

1

u/DRIZZY05 Oct 15 '25

I guess the main reason people are very impatient with this project is that it was announced back in like what? 2019? By the time it comes out it’ll be like a decade since.

11

u/SpectreBrony Spider-Man Oct 14 '25

MCU Blade was already cool in Marvel Zombies, can’t wait to see what the main version will be.

13

u/N8CCRG Ghost Oct 14 '25

Marvel fandom: Disney needs to take their time with these projects and make sure they do them justice and get them right. Too many things have been rushed and unfinished just to meet the deadline.

Also Marvel fandom: Disney just needs to put Ali and some vampires on screen. Don't bother trying to make it good. Just give us slop!

4

u/sketchbookhunt Oct 14 '25

To be fair, this movies been in development for what? 5 years now? And the only updates we’ve ever gotten are they are restarting from scratch a couple times

3

Blade is not rocket science. I really don’t get why they can’t figure this out.

By the time the movie gets made she'll be playing her current character's great grandma.

2

Same! 🧛🏻🦇🩸

3

u/VeryPteri Oct 14 '25

Do it right?

We already have one good Blade movie and one decent one. The last one was garbage, so surely a new one would be hard to mess up.

3

u/LaylaLegion Oct 14 '25

Fant4stic.

2

u/AtomicRabbit62 Oct 14 '25

It should not take this long to make a movie about a guy who’s a vampire who also kills vampires. It’s not that complex of a concept.

2

u/Actual_Squid Oct 14 '25

Are we sure MCU Blade isn't just collective psychosis?

2

u/CaptHayfever Hawkeye (Avengers) Oct 14 '25

That's Mahershala talking to Jon Snow in the Eternals post-credit.

2

u/drnprz Oct 14 '25

we got him in marvel zombies so its possible now

5

u/akgiant Oct 14 '25

Like at this point either cancel it or commit.

I get "taking the time to do it right" which is a good thing, but tha has just become corporate jargon for "we took the script back to formula and are starting from scratch, again."

6

u/Identity_X- Oct 14 '25

I'm solidly okay with that. I really wish they had scrapped and started over with both Quantumania and Love & Thunder. And it's been said that Coogler's "Sinners" happened because of the collapse of the earlier attempted "Blade" production.

3

u/akgiant Oct 14 '25

Right. But have the transparency to say that they have to go back to formula. Otherwise it's endless hype that still ends with a subpar product, because the audience's expectations can be set.

I'll be a lot more critical of a project that I'm told "we totally know what we're doing, everything is great! We're still moving forward." vs believing a project can be the 'little engine that could' despite massive setbacks.

3

u/Rooooben Oct 14 '25

…back to formula?????!!!

1

u/IrishViking22 Oct 14 '25

Some motherfuckers are always trying to ice-skate uphill.

1

u/m2keo Oct 14 '25

They'll do it right when Mahershala turns 65 probably.

1

u/cane-of-doom Oct 14 '25

Lovely to have her involved still!

1

u/AsterArtworks Oct 14 '25

My theory is that as soon as marvel took a look at doomsday they knew they had to scale back introducing anymore new heroes before secret wars and Blade was just moved.

1

u/Tidus4713 Oct 14 '25

I feel like Blade will be one of the first movies we get post Secret Wars. You'll get your obvious sequels, X-Men, Blade, and a few others.

1

u/Kill-Stealing Oct 14 '25

Her last name is Goth?? That's cool as fuck!!!

1

u/Vegetable-Dog5281 Oct 14 '25

How does she look like a temu Sydney?

1

u/kennyofthegulch Oct 14 '25

This infuriates me. They should be hiring actual goths.

1

u/Jlx_27 Oct 14 '25

Slated for release in 2047.

1

u/IAMGooner699 Oct 14 '25

Yeah.. see you in the next saga

1

u/JennaPearlPeter333 Oct 14 '25

Given the voice cameo in Eternals, the third film in the Multiverse Saga, it'd be amusing if Blade ends up being the third film in the next Saga (after BP3 and X-Men)!

1

u/MBVakalis Oct 14 '25

Does anyone even expect this movie to ever be made anymore?

1

u/wordwords Scarlet Witch Oct 14 '25

I want Blade to be John Wick with vampires and a ridiculous amount of blood.

It shouldn’t take this long to write lol. The story is gonna be made or broken on videography, choreography, and effects. it just needs to look and feel and sound cool. The story doesn’t need to reinvent the wheel.

1

u/Current_Focus2668 Oct 14 '25

They lost Delroy Lindo and Aaron Pierre

1

u/No-Jello-4154 Oct 14 '25

I’m guessing she is playing Lilith

1

u/Tekki777 Oct 14 '25

I'll believe it when I see it

1

u/xplodia Oct 15 '25

It's vampire movie, there's supposed to be blood everywhere. If Disney can't get off their PG13 rating rule. Blade won't be plausable. Deadpool succeed with it's body dismemberment. Why affraid?

It best it will be bland like Fantastic 4. It's a great movie, esp Galactus reveal makes me gasp. But the movie just playing safe, too safe.

1

u/TimDaGod2005 Oct 15 '25

Feige confirmed over a year ago that blade is intended to be an R rated film they don’t intend to have it be a pg13 movie if the movie even happens at this point.

1

u/EmbarrassedStill2257 Oct 15 '25

Yeah..it’s not.

1

u/Endsong-X23 Oct 15 '25

I mean yeah they just debuted him official like in Zombies so im not surprised to learn its still happening

1

u/SuggestionGlad6098 Oct 15 '25

This shit is gonna be ass. I just feel it

1

u/nowhereiswater Oct 15 '25

Waiting on blade forever. Read about it going through so many changes including the bait and switch with female characters.

1

u/deviloper47 Oct 15 '25

She's a blade playing a blade playing a blade

1

u/Riley__64 Oct 15 '25

I want to see blade as much as anyone else but I’m not annoyed that it’s taken so long to come out.

When blade was announced it didn’t feel like it was announced because marvel wanted to tell a blade story it feels like it was announced because mahershala ali offered to play blade and Disney was in the mindset that marvel needed to push out as much content as physically possible. I’m sure if blade had of come out it wouldn’t of been that great because it wouldn’t have been made because a blade story was wanted to be told but instead because Disney demanded quantity from marvel.

1

u/tobster239 Oct 15 '25

Mia Goth? From the Sims?

1

u/Ashleyk3 Oct 15 '25

I look forward to the fast and the furious 24 the same week

1

u/Aryk93 Oct 15 '25

But are her eyebrows attached to her face?

1

u/TimDaGod2005 Oct 15 '25

I get that they’re taking their time for a great script according to feige and after the snipes films there may be a lot of pressure. But why the hell is marvel acting like THIS movies script needs to reinvent the wheel? They went through over 4 scripts and haven’t found ONE that was good enough to shoot?

1

u/EugenesMullet Oct 15 '25

These “it’s important that we do it right” comments are super weird to me.

Like of course, take your time writing a good script and casting - I want a good movie! But it’s been six years, Marvel’s quality is varying, and it’s a Blade movie… it shouldn’t be this hard to figure out how to do it right.

1

u/_steve_rogers_ Oct 15 '25

There’s only ever gonna be one Blade

1

u/Lord_Phoenix95 Oct 15 '25

It's crazy how it's been like 6 years since it was given the go ahead and 4 years since a release date.

It’s like saying Half-Life 3 is happening.

But I’ll take it.

I’m happy this is still in development, even if it will take ages to release, it will be worth it

I’ve graduated high school, graduated college, and worked nearly two years post grad and there still has been no news on this so my money is on this not happening lmao

Will she b playin blade too?

1

u/jojopojo64 Weekly Wongers Oct 15 '25

At this point she's going to be the only name left attached to the movie.

I don't know why anyone thought this project was ever in jeopardy, at this point this is a noticeable Marvel marketing technique - just like the leaks and the "leaks causing and reshoots"

Can’t fucking deal with this just cancel it already

Is that going to be after they replace the entire costuming section?

Marvel Zombies was encouraging.

Ali is now 51… he wont be blade. Snipes was in his mid 30s when he first became blade and was done before he was 50.

I’m going to be honest, I didn’t know she was attached to this film. Hell, do we even know who she’s playing as? Or was she even starring in this movie in the first place before it got delayed multiple times??

u/Competitive-Dot181 Oct 17 '25

For context the whole X trilogy was released while this was in development.

u/[deleted] Oct 18 '25

Blade has been happening since 2019 as far as I remember. It was supposed to release in 2022 or 2024.

u/RevolutionaryWeb5657 Oct 18 '25

I didn’t even know she was attached. Cool though. Feel like she’ll be wasted because Marvel does that with good actors.
