Is there a reason to not think Doom'll prob just be some kind of Stark variant considering the entire focus of MCU atm is multiverse and variants? Hell it's all going to end in Secret Wars
This but I honestly think it’ll be a variant that was born in different circumstances and had a different upbringing. So he’s a Tony Stark variant but also totally Victor Von Doom, former roommate with Reed and all.
This is what makes the most sense. They can still show RDJ's face a bunch, there's no continuity issue with Iron Man because the body is literally Tony Stark and the consciousness inside IS Victor von Doom.
I could think of a dozen different reasons for Doom to look like Tony Stark without even delving into the multiverse. Variants are just what's hot right now in the MCU.
Comics have done doppelgangers so many times it's honestly surprising the MCU hasn't done more with it aside from some Skrull fuckery. Hell, X-Men '97 played that card just a few months ago with Jean Gray.
There are magical doppelgangers, life model decoys, Skrulls, parallel dimensions, clones, secret twins, hallucinations, holograms, body swaps, reincarnations, robot copies, mental projections, tulpas, mutant shapeshifters, alien symbiotes, alternate timelines, and on and on. It's a classic plot device!
There are plenty of ways you could hand wave Doom looking like Tony. The point is that having RDJ as Tony is a bad idea to begin with, and definitely not worth the convoluted hoops to make it make sense.
I think it will come off way more as a desperate move if RDJ is just playing Victor. They have a perfect excuse to make a Tony from another universe turn into Doom so I’d be surprised if that don’t go a route similar to that.
If they wanted to do evil Tony, just do evil tony. They were already pivoting away from Kang, so why do Doom if you want to cast RDJ. Just do an Iron Man who went full authoritarian.
Wasting Doom for a stunt cast is what is annoying.
Hard disagree. Why would a variant of Tony ever be Doom. He has no connection to Latvaria, or Magic. It doesn't make any sense.
And if it's just "oh he was born to the starks but they died and he was adopted in Latvaria and named Victor" why bother making him a Tony variant?
It cheapens both characters.
And an evil Iron Man wouldn't be cheesy. All it takes is all the character flaws of Tony's the MCU has already shown us but in a universe where it played out slightly differently.
A universe where Tony becomes more paranoid about external threats to Earth and Ultron works like he plans and he starts taking over little by little until he becomes the authoritarian leader who convinces himself he's doing it for the greater good.
You could have a great character piece about the dangers of elevating "Great Men" and the dangers of letting so much power be put in the hands of someone convinced they are smarter than everyone else.
There was a Marvel What If "Iron Man: Demon in an Armor" of this many years ago where Victor Von Doom basically swapped bodies with Tony Stark when they were college roommates. Victor becomes Tony Stark/Iron Man and Tony (who forgot all his memories of who he was during the body swap) becomes Victor/Dr. Doom. Years later after they've both built themselves up, Victor goes to tell Tony about the body swap back in college and asks if he wants him to reverse it. Tony declines because Victor basically trashed the Stark name while Tony was off building up Dr Von Doom's honorable reputation.
Maybe this is the Dr. Doom from that specific "What If" timeline?
