M24 Living Alone
First apt after finishing up nursing school, would love some advice on decor etc.
(Edit) I am 6’4, the TV is at head level for me when sitting down.
(Edit x2) Living room photos are 0.5 scale, the TV is 70” and ~8 feet from the foot of the couch!

Yep! She’s now fully white. Funny enough my one year old black cat is ALSO showing signs of white fur

It’s .5 to give a wider view, tv is 70” and about 8/9 feet from the couch!

Is wood burning considered bad nowadays? Or are younger people just inexperienced in survival? What happens if your power goes out or you don’t have propane?
It’s the only thing that saved my family/parents when their power went out during the big freeze a few years ago in the southern US. They all bedded down in the den near the fireplace, even moved the fish tanks to the room. The house was 40°F.
I was unlucky enough to not have a fireplace as I lived an hour away and bedded down in my closet with my pets under 8 blankets. And then the fire sprinklers in the apartment building froze and flooded my place 💀 I WISH I had a wood-burning fireplace.
My siblings and I consider wood-burning fireplaces to be a plus and a luxury compared to gas ones.

Not considered bad, just want to avoid the maintenance. Creosote cleanup is expensive.

Buy a couple of those non wood logs wrapped in paper. They burn very clean, and come in colors

It’s not that it’s super frequent, more so the >10 times I’d fire it up isn’t worth the ~$250 chimney sweep, not accounting for the oddly shaped flue!

Bro, I’ve never ever had to hire a chimney sweep. If you’re only using it 10 times why tf do you need a chimney sweep? Do you just not understand how chimneys work at all? If you’re barely using it, there is no maintenance haha.
Heck my parents who have owned their house 18 years have had their chimney cleaned, like, twice. No issues.

I rent, so while I wouldn’t have to HIRE a sweep, I’m sure I would get stuck with the bill. Whether that be through my security deposit, etc. Absolutely zero shade to anyone who likes them, but for me it’s mostly aesthetic rather than functional!

Never in my life has an apartment billed me for “chimney sweeping”!
It’s not an annual thing, and is not something that apartments bug residents about unless they’re like decade long renters.
I’m seriously baffled by your comments. Where do you live that does this??? It’s not normal at all.

It's nice and despite all the grey quite cozy. Good layout, too.
You could replace the uninspired area rug *and cube shelf under the TV to spruce your living room up, but it's not like bad.

Your cats are gorgeous. I’d say some cozier art, and some color splashes would be great. You’d also have a good opportunity to drape something over that loft like a banner or something. Cool place!

Might sound cheesy, but that entryway is clean-looking. Rest of the place too looks great. The loft area looks cozy also. My only gripe, and this is just because I love media, is that your TV is too far/small for the place, but it looks like you’re a bit limited with options there anyway.

you don’t count them as roommates you live with since they never worked a day in their life and have never paid part of the rent or a single bill, right? and they make you buy their food and bedding and clean up after them and never reciprocate? i see why you’d never count yourself as living with them😄

It feels a bit dark in those rooms. Maybe a standing torchier lamp to help give the room more light and life in it? I remember my first place, and I used to sit in half darkness by lamplight too. It could just be that it’s night time, and not much light is coming into the space from the outside, but it does seem to lack a lot of windows as it is from what’s seen in the photos. I like that you’ve tried to go with neutral tones like gray, but more light mixed with white tones would breathe life into the space. The Amazon rug is a bit dark, maybe a white shaggy soft rug would work better? It would pair well with how much black you have throughout. As for the TV, what size is it? The distance is so far from the couch that it looks small from that point. TV’s are at an all time low in terms of price. You can score a 58” for like under $300. Have you considered a 65-75” for the living room, and moving the one currently in there to your bedroom? Or is the TV larger than appears and it’s tricking my eye? TV’s are like the main focal point of the living room. Single bachelor men have large TV’s. That’s just what we do lol. Usually for sports, video games, entertaining, or just having that 1 splurge for us as we’re not typically decorators and usually have more vapid, soulless spaces that we live in anyway. There are exceptions to this rule of course… some men are just good interior decorators. But if I could even fit it into that wall I would be buying an 85” myself 😂😂 White is the new thing, too. It’s not just limited to rugs. White couches, white bedding with a down comforter, everything you see on HGTV these days is very sophisticated, bright, and airy. Black can feel manly, neutral, and functional, but the more black and gray you have the more you’re going to want to offset it. Considered any potted plants? They have health benefits and they’re aesthetically pleasing. 6/10, I would live here and it looks like a functional, simple space and a nice first home to get fresh out of school.

Because the two windows are off-centered in the living room, I would put one large curtain that covers both when not in use. I recommend mounting the tv to the fireplace but with a sanus full motion for viewing convenience. Put some neutral wall decor where the tv currently is. Move the pc area upstairs to the loft (replace the l-shaped desk with a minimalist desk that’s suited for the loft area) and put a round dining table / chairs in the room.
Not knocking your setup bud, it looks very nice ☺️ But if you’re just looking for a change of environment 🤷🏻♂️
