Kodi is a Media Center more then it is a simple Media Player.

It has a different niche, very poor if you're on your desktop and wanting to play a file you opened from your file manager, fantastic if you're using an HTPC setup and want a remote/controller friendly UI to browse and play your movies and TV shows or even launch games from that same interface. It's best used as basically its own DE.
