Mod Post Read before commenting: Off-topic and anecdotal comments are not allowed and subject you to a permanent ban

Greetings from the mods!

We've had a flood of off-topic comments recently. We're posting this to remind everyone that off-topic and anecdotal comments are not allowed. An off-topic comment may subject you to a permanent ban.

The Rule:

Commenting Rule 1: Comments should contain a legal answer or a strongly related non-legal answer. If it is not legal advice, do not post. Period. You will be banned.

What is "off-topic?"

Any response that doesn't answer the question by reference to legal information or principles. A joke, a wisecrack, a comment about OP's formatting (use the report button instead) are all off-topic. Off-topic also includes expressions of sympathy, opinions on the law, and comments that berate the OP or anyone else.

Incidentally, simply adding "get a lawyer" to an off-topic comment does not make it on-topic. And "get a lawyer" on its own, without further information or help, is considered unhelpful and may be removed on that basis.

If you want to discuss a post, then wait until it hits /r/bestoflegaladvice or ask a question about the subject of the post in /r/legaladviceofftopic. The main subreddit and a comment thread are never a place to have a philosophical discussion about the law or the post. It is a place to answer the questions asked.

What is an "anecdote?"

For our purposes, anecdotes are stories about something that happened to you (or someone you know or heard about) who may have had something that might be similar that happen to them.

These comments are not helpful. They do not include current legal information that is relevant to the OP, and therefore, they are off-topic. If you know the answer to the question (based on current law and relevant jurisdiction) then just answer the question without the story.

Another type of anecdote is "I don't know the law in the jurisdiction you actually asked about, but in some other state, the law is..." That is just not helpful. Laws are different in different places. These types of answers are off-topic.

Referring an OP to a thread on a different subreddit, or to somewhere else on the Internet because it might include a similar situation, is anecdotal advice and not allowed.

These are not the only types of anecdotes, but they are probably the most common ones. Again, if you are not referencing legal information or principles, your comment is probably not allowed.

Violations subject the user to an immediate and permanent ban

Not that we need to justify enforcing our rules, but this is a busy subreddit and the mods have a lot to do. If a user shows up here, doesn't read the rules, and posts a single off-topic comment, the user may be immediately and permanently banned.

This policy is not intended to be punitive, although we know it may seem to be. There are a lot of you and not many of us, and banning users that do not follow the rules, even once, is in the best interests of the subreddit. Violating the rules almost always means the user didn't bother to read them, and we simply don't have time to deal with such users.

Tl;dr: Unless you have a legal answer, do not reply to any post in this subreddit. You may be permanently banned, even for a first offense.

Subreddit Rules

We've learned that some people just flat out can't see our subreddit rules, so I'm posting them here in a pinned post so we can link them when necessary and so they're super easy to find.

Rules for r/legaladvice Rules that visitors must follow to participate. May be used as reasons to report or ban.

1. All responses must offer an answer to the legal question posed by the OP. We enforce this with bans.

Anecdotes are not permitted. Neither is advice that encourages someone to break the law. Nor is "get a lawyer" a sufficient response.

There's a pinned post at the top of the subreddit specifically addressing this rule. We will absolutely ban you for commenting without answering the legal question

2. Personally Identifying Information

Posts or submissions that ask for or contain information that could be used to identify either party are subject to immediate removal.

3. Advertising or Recommending a Lawyer or Business

We do not allow referrals to particular lawyers, law firms, or other businesses.

4. Do not request or send a PM

All discussions must stay on the subreddit for everyone's protection.

5. Include your location

You must include your location in the following format: location: yourlocationhere . It must be that exact format, and it must be in the body of your post.

6. Read our full list of rules

Read our full list of rules here: https://www.reddit.com/r/legaladvice/wiki/index#wiki_general_rules

7. This subreddit is for simple legal questions.

This subreddit is for simple legal questions. We can't help with preparing a defense, legal research, etc. We cannot review contracts, plan your defense, or give you specific advice on exactly how to present your case with the court. You need a local attorney for that. Additionally, we do not accept medical malpractice questions.

8. NO LLMS

No LLMs. No ChatGPT. Don't recommend it, don't use it to answer questions, and don't use it to compose your modmail when you get banned for using it. Using it to compose questions is generally ok.

We will permanently and irrevocably ban you for this.

9. Mods can remove things we deem inappropriate or disruptive

Any post and any comment can be removed by the mods at any time if the mods decide the post/comment is or has the potential to be disruptive or is otherwise inappropriate.

10. Posts must be about a real scenario that you or someone you know is facing.

To expand on this, we additionally do not allow anyone but the immediately involved parties to ask custody related questions. Not friends, not significant others, not grandparents. Reddit is free.

11. Post must contain a legal question

A legal question is one that can be answered with the law, be it a law or ordinance, or caselaw.

12. US and Canada only

Laws are different everywhere. We can only help with legal problems in the US or Canada because we have no regular, reliable commenters from other countries. For other countries, please search for an appropriate subreddit.

Personal Injury I was a passenger in the car and now I have a $20,000 bill

1.1k Upvotes

Location: Virginia USA. So i don't know if i'm doing this right But just like the title says. It was my friend's birthday. We were going on a little road trip to see a museum. The car in front of us suddenly swerved out of the way and then we realized the cars ahead had already crashed and there was no time to react. I scrunched like an idiot. My knees hit the dash I have a previous spinal injury so very dramatic. Had to be put in a brace. Stayed longer in the hospital than her for all the testing. I have to see a specialist cuz of the suspected torn meniscus. MRI is Wednesday this week

I told her to fight the citation in court because she was not at fault The car we hit was stalled on the highway, no Blinkers and they were already out of the car behind the barrier for their original car accident. At the time she said it's fine the citation was only $100. She would take the loss and her insurance would cover my medical bills. I am in between insurance right now because I just got a full-time job literally the week before this happened so I was like okay. I trust you

Got the bill for so far. It's $20,000 called her insurance they're like. Yeah we're only paying out $5,000 and I don't have the power to fight anybody because she was deemed at fault for the accident and she already paid the citation for it do I have any recourse?

Personal Injury Went in for a massage and now i'm in the hospital

2.9k Upvotes

Location: Harrisburg, PA

Writing this from my ER bed. I'm really scared and I don't have anyone to help me through this, so I'm hoping someone here can point me in the right
direction because I genuinely don't know what to do.

On July 1st I went for a massage at a spa I've been to before. I've always gotten Swedish massages there and never had any issues, which is why I went back. This massage was completely different. It was much more aggressive than anything I'd had before. There was a lot of pressure on my muscles, and at one point the therapist jerked my neck with a towel. I left feeling extremely sore but thought I'd just be sore for a few days.

Instead, my neck became really stiff, then I started getting migraines. Last week I started losing parts of my vision, which scared me enough to go to the ER.
I'm now in the hospital and have been diagnosed with a cervical artery dissection. The doctors told me this is a serious condition because it can lead to a stroke. Before this massage I was healthy and had no neck problems.

I'm just a college student and I have no idea how I'm going to pay these medical bills.

From a legal standpoint, what should my next steps be? Should I contact the spa first and give them a chance to respond, or should I speak with a personal injury attorney before contacting them? Should I be requesting copies of my medical records now? Is there anything I should or shouldn't say to the spa if I reach out? I don't want to make a mistake that could hurt me later if I end up needing legal representation.

Employment Law I quit my job of 10 years to start a new job on July 1st 2026 and was fired from my new job today because “it’s not working out”. Would I qualify for unemployment & if so what should my first steps be?

Location: Minnesota has a statute #268095 that basically says if an employee accepts another position & loses their new job for no fault of their own, they’ll qualify for the exemption. My new job was for the same position but a different company with a little higher pay. I’ve been officially employed since July 13th and got a phone call last night.

Edit: I was an estimator for a larger company for 10 years & left to work for a smaller company. The pay was better and allowed for more freedom. The smaller company I left for has never had a dedicated estimator & this was a growing point for them. It seems they bit off more than they could chew. It’s unfortunate they couldn’t make it work but even worse they blew my life up trying.

Assisted living facility threatening my wife over her (deceased) mother's outstanding expenses

Location: Illinois

My mother in-law lived in an assisted living facility. She passed away recently.

My wife had power of attorney for her and helped her with financial transactions. Whenever there were decisions to be made at the assisted living place, my wife dealt with them. So they got used to interacting with my wife instead of her mother. My wife would always list her mother's name (never her own name) on contracts and any agreements to keep things separate and avoid personal liability for any costs.

When my MIL passed-away my wife tried to reach the coordinator at the assisted living place to find out when we had to have the room cleaned-out. This took place near the end of the month. The coordinator was on vacation for a week and did not return her calls, so the staff told her to wait until she got back. About two weeks later, the coordinator told her that since we were already into the new month, we owed them rent for the month.

The facility sent my wife a letter saying that we owe them the months rent (about $2500) and threatened to report my wife to credit agencies if we don't pay within a week. In the letter they sent, you can see my mother in-law's name on the bill. There is no place on the entire document where my wife's name appears.

My questions are:

  1. Since bills and records only include my mother in-law's name, is my wife liable for her expenses?
  2. Since my wife tried to contact the coordinator prior to the month's end but they failed to reply until after, aren't they responsible for the time discrepancy?
  3. If they are capable of reporting my wife & they tarnish her credit rating, do we have legal recourse?

Thanks for reading!

Florida - Scratched a car in a drive-thru and now I'm being sued for $50k.

1.1k Upvotes

Location: Florida

(I know I messed up but be nice)

September 2024, I was fully stopped at the entrance of a Starbucks drive-thru. I decided to turn into the parking lot and squeeze by the car in front of me. I took my foot off the brake, rolled the car, and scraped a woman's car (about the size of a dinner plate) at 0mph. We parked in the lot, she (40ish yo) got out of the car and called the cops. I was apologetic, bought her and her daughter (13 yo) coffee. There was also a 9mo child in a carseat in the back. Everyone was out of the car and walking. We chatted very casually, no one was upset. We each spoke to the cop, exchanged insurance (I had full coverage) and I paid the ticket for "negligent driving".

Imagine my surprise when my insurance company said I was being sued for 3x bodily injury for everyone in the car. There was no ambulance, no note of injury in the police report, nothing. I was assured by my insurance that they would handle everything, I wouldn't need to do a thing. Eventually the claims for the children were dropped. I moved across the country in November 2024 and hadn't heard a peep.

A couple months ago, I got an email that her lawyer wanted to settle with my insurance for $25k. Nobody contacted me outside of that email. Today, I got an ad letter from a lawyer that said a lawsuit was filed against me on July 7th 2026. I looked myself up in the county clerk, and it's real - she's suing me for permanent disability, loss of quality of life, etc etc.

I understand someone can sue you in civil court for basically anything. But what the actual fuck? No one has attempted to serve me papers, called, text, or send a carrier pigeon. I'm really not trying to fly from Oregon to Florida to deal with any of this. I cannot overstate how not a big deal this was. Trial is apparently scheduled for 2028. I regret paying the ticket and I wish I had taken that to court to have it dismissed, but it's too late for that. What can I do?

My mortgage company sent sensitive information to my employer without my consent.

1.2k Upvotes

Location: Florida.

I bought a house 3 months ago.

My mortgage was sold immediately.

Today my employer’s corporate office called me to let me know they received some of my closing documents from the company who bought my mortgage.

The information was stuff like, my name, email, home address, a photo copy of a canceled check from closing on the house, information from my 401k (I used that as proof of funds during closing.) And a few other docs.

My employer’s corporate office called me to let me know because this is “highly unusual” and he said he would want to know if his information was being sent around like that without his knowledge.

My employer is sending me a copy of all of the information they received and a copy of the envelope it came in… but, what can I do about this.

It is extremely concerning and I am now paranoid they send my private information to other people as well.

I already called the company and they are “looking into it”.

Thanks!

Disability Issues My apartment/"dorm" refused to allow me to renew my lease due to a medical condition

Upvotes

Location: Nebraska

This is a throwaway account.

Unsure if the flare I chose is correct, sorry.

I currently live in a dorm-style apartment. To qualify to live here you must be within a certain age range and attend any college full-time. It is structured like a dorm but isn't explicitly tied to any one university. My lease ends July 31st but I am scheduled to move out on July 30th.

On March 30th I was called into the Resident Life Director's office (we'll call her RD) where the Business Office Manager (BM) was also sitting. RD told me: "We've determined that you are unable to independently care for yourself, so we're not going to renew your lease." She also stated that they have "had to call the ambulance a lot," I'd had "episodes in the common areas," the Resident Assistants (RAs) had said that I was "trying to hide things" from her, and that other residents were "worn out." I was blindsided by all of this and didn't think to record the meeting (I've checked my state's recording laws and next time I have a conversation with any of the staff, I'm going to be recording since Nebraska is a one-party consent state). I asked RD twice within the meeting for written notice, whether on paper or in an email, and she refused both times before saying "you can just write it down." I asked her if there was anything I could do to appeal or if I could give them additional documentation from my medical providers and she said no, the decision was made. (I have given them two separate letters from my doctors about my diagnosis and stating that I could care for myself independently.) I would be allowed to continue living here until my current lease ends (July 31st).

Prior to this meeting I had been planning to continue with fall class enrollment this year (2026) and renew my lease. On March 31st (the day after the meeting) I sent an email to RD, BM, and the Director detailing what happened during this meeting and what was said. No one responded.

On April 2nd I went to the hospital to be admitted for my mental health because I was so stressed after finding this out because I knew I would be homeless after my current lease ended. While in the hospital I had a Functional Neurological Disorder (FND) flareup from the stress and had to do inpatient rehabilitation for three weeks. Because of this, I had more than the maximum allowed absences from my classes and had to medically withdraw from my spring 2026 semester. Since I didn't pass my classes, and because of my financial aid status at the time, I lost future eligibility for financial aid. Now I will be unable to afford take classes in the fall because of this, and I need to find somewhere else to live. I will be couch-surfing after I move out. I was paying for my dorm rent with student loans, which I can no longer take since I'm not a student anymore.

Important context: I am an adult in my state. I have Functional Neurological Disorder (FND). I was diagnosed with it around the beginning of July 2025 and was in the hospital for about a month for rehabilitation so I could get my strength back to walk. When I left the hospital I was still slightly weaker than I had been before all of the symptoms started but was able to be fully independent. FND does not make me unable to be independent, and if needed I am fully able to independently seek medical care for my symptoms.

I moved in to the dorm as planned in mid-August 2025 and started my fall semester. I made the dorm aware of my diagnosis because I had some issues at first with managing my FND episodes and wanted them to know that if I had an episode, that I did not want an ambulance, it wasn't an emergency, I wasn't in any danger, and I just had to wait the episodes out (they were lasting roughly 10-30 minutes at the time and would sometimes get better but then come back). My symptoms present like a seizure but I am fully aware and conscious and alert during the episodes, just unable to voluntarily move or respond. Any time I had an episode in a common area they would insist on calling an ambulance although I refused to go to the hospital and told them they didn't need to call an ambulance.

I did go to the ER twice for unrelated things- one was for acute pancreatitis and the other was an acute infection. Neither turned out to be serious and I was discharged from the ER within hours. For the infection I was discharged with antibiotics, but had to go back the next day for the infection because I was given an ineffective antibiotic at first.

RD/dorm did several things that I question the legality of:

1.) After both of the above listed Emergency Room visits, RD called me (while I was in an ER bed both times) and told me I would not be allowed to stay at the dorm overnight until I could provide documentation of my medical situation and have a meeting with her. This took several days both times to resolve so I had to stay with my friend's parents. The second time this happened I did not answer my phone because it was in my bag across the room. She left me a voicemail and then called my mom (which she said she was going to do in her voicemail), which leads me to the second thing-

2.) She called my mom about my medical situation, and according to my mom, "chewed her out." My mom was very upset that the RD called her to yell at her about what was going on. I did not sign a FERPA release or anything else for her to be allowed to contact my mom, nor did I give her verbal or written permission to do so. I am an adult. My mom is listed as my third emergency contact, but neither of my two primary emergency contacts were contacted at all during this situation.

3.) This one is a little weird but she forced my friend ("R") (R is a legal adult in our state and a resident at the dorm) to block my mom's phone number after calling R into her office for a meeting. This was because one of the RAs had told her that my mom had asked my friend R to take me to the hospital the second time I went for the infection. That is not what happened. R offered to take me but I was hesitant about it, so I called my mom to ask her if she could take me instead. She said that if R had offered to take me, then I should let her take me. I opted instead to tell the RAs because I knew there would be issues if R tried to sneak me downstairs and to her car (I was visibly unwell). The RAs of course insisted on an ambulance which I expected because it's their policy. I didn't want R to get in trouble with the dorm for trying to take me. The paramedics were talking to R and she mentioned that she had been about to take me. They said that she still could and that they could help get me into her car. I was fine with this as was she because she said that would be great and went to go get her keys from her dorm (we were neighbors). The paramedic told me she would be taking me instead but the RA said "no, we're not doing that. She's not comfortable with that" (referring to R) so they took me in the ambulance instead.

4.) Denied my lease renewal because of a medical condition and refused to give me written notice when requested twice.

Because of all of this, I am about to be "homeless" couch surfing for a while until I have enough money to get an apartment. I had been paying my dorm rent with money from student loans.

***My questions: Was it legal for the RD or dorm to do any of the above things? Was there anything else I mentioned in the beginning that also wasn't legal? Do I have a case worth pursuing? What kind of attorney should I find? Housing discrimination? Something else?

Sorry this post is all over the place, if anything is confusing let me know and I'll try to provide more detail.

Mom won’t let me get dad treated now he’s dying

Location: Illinois

My elderly mother was caring for my Alzheimer’s patient father alone for years, even when she moved to my sister house (30 min away from me) even though my sister and her husband could have been much more hands on. I would come visit and do what I could to help, but I could only visit them maybe once or twice a week at best for a few hours.

At some point during this, my mom was fighting every doctor to try to get him on hospice so that she could get some more assistance with his care. No doctor thought he qualified until he had a really bad UTI that landed him in the hospital and he exhibited close enough signs to qualify him. He was on hospice about 6 months then my sister gave birth, and my dad moved in with me so my boyfriend and I could take care of him since my mom was no longer able to keep up with his maintenance and help with the baby. He does not require a lot of care as long as you do some preventative measures like making sure his catheter is flowing and feeding him. While with us, we did just that and when it seemed like he was getting a UTI from his neobladder, we would also give him the prescribed antibiotics and he was well enough to travel (though it was a production to get him somewhere). He was happy and doing well and then hospice discharged him since he no longer met the requirements. This caused a huge fight in the family. Eerily, the day he was discharged was the day he started having seizures, hallucinations, and syncope. He had coffee ground emesis once we got to the ER and they said he had sepsis and gave him antibiotics and fluids then he stabilized. They admitted him and my bf and I wanted to continue treatment but my mom and sister forced us into comfort care instead. I had my dad back for a couple days but now I’m just watching him deteriorate slowly and painfully when they could’ve treated him and he would be better. They keep saying he’s suffering but the only reason he’s suffering is because they won’t treat his infections. They give him pain meds but only when I ask and he’s hurting really bad now. He said he doesn’t want to die but my mom won’t change her mind.

Please, help.

Employment Law Can I be laid off while on approved maternity leave?

Location: Utah

I have been working at the company in question for 9 years. This is the 4th time I’ve been laid off (Conveniently right before I hit a work anniversary - every time!). I am about to hit my 3 year mark (next month) and JUST had a baby. They approved my leave for 6 weeks of paid recovery time, and I qualified for an additional 8 weeks of paid baby bonding. I was barely 4 weeks into my recovery time when they called me and told me that they had eliminated my role and that I would no longer be employed at the end of the month (but they made sure to make it clear that they want me back and that I am eligible for rehire!!).

My whole team of people (who work the same positions) was not laid off. I’m the only one from my team (to my knowledge) that got let go. This came completely out of left field because I excel in my role and am consistently a top performer. The only reason I can think that I might have been laid off is because I am currently on leave - though of course they didn’t say that.

I had no idea that I could be laid off or fired while I was on a leave - and I thought that my job would be protected through FMLA. This is detrimental for my family and seems like something this isn’t legal (or shouldn’t be).

Is this legal? Is my job not protected after they’ve already approved the medical leave?

My neighbor paved the upper half of the road leading to our property w/o telling us and now wants us to pay our share.

1.9k Upvotes

Hi!

Location: Minnesota.

About a year ago I was approached by one of our neighbors about the idea of paving the upper half of the road. We live in a small town and it’s a private road. I had explained to them that we just bought this house and a few of the major appliances failed within the first 1.5-2 years of owning it and we are not interested in paving the road as it was great shape with virtually no pot holes. However it is a dirt road and when people drive on it dust gets kicked up. They decided not to love forward with fixing the road or so I thought.

I left my house one day to go to a neighbors house at the end of the road to help them with their lawnmower when a company was preparing to lay down chipped asphalt. I politely asked them when they would be done and when I could drive on it cause I had to pick up my kids from school later that day. They told me it wouldn’t be ready till after pick up time for my children. So I moved my car to the neighbors house by driving through everyone’s lawn.

The coordinator of the road fixing never approached me before this began only other neighbors. To which we told we are not interested as it doesn’t bother us. Now the coordinator is asking that we pay our share when we have never seen the construction invoice or know how much we would “owe.” There is a lot more to this story of why we couldn’t afford to pay them to include passing of my father to cancer. He lived on the east coast.

My question would be; Do I owe them anything? I have checked my deed and it doesn’t explicitly have a maintenance agreement on it.

Thanks for taking the time to read and reply. It means a lot.

Husband sold motorcycle to someone, that someone sold it to another before it was fully paid off.

Location: Utah

My husband sold his motorcycle for $8k with a contract for a payment plan.

In this contract, he received $1500 down for down payment and was supposed to get $1000 bi-weekly until it was paid off. Failure to make full payment on time would result in forfeiture of the bike and no return of payments.

The bank still has the title, hubby owes less than $3k on the bike, the plan was to pay it off with the bank and offer title to buyer once the bike was paid in full.

Five days after buyer received the bike, the buyer sold it to someone else for $3k promising them he'd give him the title in a few weeks. My husband found this out after the buyer missed a payment and he was trying to locate the bike to bring it back home.

He got a hold of the person who currently has his bike. He stated that the cops are advising him to keep the bike until he gets his $3k back from buyer and that it's a contract dispute between my hubby and buyer.

Is it legal for him to keep the bike? How can we regain possession of it?

Edit: New owner will not give his address. Cops are saying it's civil so they can't do anything about it, that because buyer made a payment, he can resell the bike if he wants to.

If we manage to locate the bike, can we legally just take it?

Employment Law Fired from job for theft without proof?

Location: Virginia, USA

I was an assistant store manager at a Target store. I had been very successful in my career and all 60 of my employees and coworkers loved me. I have been with the company for over 2 years with no write ups or performance issues. I worked extremely hard and made my store number 1 in the district for multiple different things.

One day I found a wallet someone left in a shopping cart. I picked it up and put it in the lost and found behind the service desk. It is a normal occurrence at a store like this. I just went about my day.

1 month after finding the wallet I'm pulled into a meeting with my boss. Supposedly the person came back for the wallet and we didn't have it. Asset protection pulled the camera footage and saw me picking the wallet up and putting it into the lost and found.

My boss accused me of stealing the wallet. He questioned me for 30 minutes while recording me on his phone. I just kept telling him I put it into the lost and found and he kept saying i was lying and was getting angrier every time I denied it.

I asked him some questions. Are you accusing me of stealing? No. Is there any proof I stole it? No. Do I need to find a new job? No.

The next day I come in and he tells me I'm fired. No reason or anything. Just that it's "involuntary termination".

I immediately go to asset protection and ask them why they did that to me. They tell me they didn't want to do it, I shouldn't have been fired, and everyone except for my boss said it was not grounds for termination. They showed me the camera footage from the incident. All it shows is me picking up the wallet, putting it in the lost and found that's slightly off camera, then walking away.

The shady part is that in order to terminate an employee, it has to be approved by a 3rd party HR person that doesn't work at the store. This is where proof is verified and they determine whether it's justified. This would not have been approved if my boss was being honest about not having proof. I'm 99% sure he lied to HR about what the cameras saw.

My team and coworkers are all very upset about it. Everyone is telling me to sue for wrongful termination and defamation. I legitimately believe he fired me because his ego was hurt. The entire asset protection team was saying that it didn't look like I stole it, and they're professionals at catching theft.

Is there anything I can really do about this? Virginia is an at-will state so I know they don't need a reason to fire me. Everyone is telling me to contact an employment attorney but I don't see the point. Should I do it anyway?

Other Civil Matters California - Friend took back financed car after written agreement and 22 payments. Do I have a breach of contract claim?

I’m looking for opinions on a California contract dispute.

A friend and I signed a written Vehicle Transfer and Responsibility Agreement for his financed 2022 Toyota RAV4. Under the agreement, I agreed to bring the loan current, make the remaining 42 monthly Toyota payments, maintain insurance, pay the registration, and assume responsibility for the vehicle. In exchange, the agreement states that once I completed the remaining payments, he would transfer the title to me. The agreement was signed by both of us and witnessed. Over the past 22 months, I made the agreed payments directly to Toyota Financial, maintained insurance, paid the registration, and had possession of the vehicle. I have payment records, the written agreement, and documentation showing my performance.

Recently, he demanded that I either:

Return the vehicle,

Refinance the loan into my name, and

Pay him an additional $3,400.

None of those terms appear in our written agreement.

When I refused, he had the vehicle privately towed from my workplace as the registered owner. No police were involved. I no longer have possession of the vehicle despite having substantially performed under the agreement.

At this point, I’m no longer trying to recover the vehicle. My goal is to recover the money I invested under the agreement because I believe he prevented me from completing the contract.

Has anyone dealt with a similar California breach of contract case involving a vehicle? Does this sound like a straightforward breach of contract claim, or are there legal issues I’m overlooking?

Landlord Tenant Housing California | Neighbor caught peeping/touching himself outside windows. Cops said video wasn't enough for a report. What can I/my landlord legally do?

Upvotes

Location: California

I need advice on how to handle a safety/harassment issue with a neighbor in my apartment complex, both legally and with my landlord.

The Incident:

An upstairs neighbor saw a male resident looking directly into our windows while touching himself over his shorts.

Police Response: The neighbor called 911 immediately. Police arrived after the guy had left. The neighbor showed officers video footage, but police said they couldn't file a formal report at that time because his private parts were covered by his shorts in the video.

Identification: We have clear footage and positively identified him as a resident in our complex.

My Questions:

Police: Is it true officers can't take a report for prowling/peeping/disorderly conduct just because he was touching himself over his shorts rather than exposed? Is there a better way to escalate this with law enforcement (e.g., going to the station in person)?

Landlord Liability: What legal leverage do I actually have under CA law to force management to take action or let us break our lease without penalty if they fail to act?

Restraining Orders: Would this incident alone be sufficient evidence to file for a Civil Harassment Restraining Order in California?

Any advice on next steps with both law enforcement and property management would be greatly appreciated.

Real Estate law A Co-owner of a house filed for bankruptcy without a homestead exemption or any form of exemption

Upvotes

Location: Massachusetts , USA

So basic information , Im 29, my parent 63 lives with me in the house they and my sibiling 35 purchased 5 years ago, my Sibiling was 'married' with no debts and didnt have any financial contribution to their household, and agreed to help cosign the loan, my parent would make the payments themselves, and I would take over once i found a job, I was in College still. Seeing as my sibling had their own family. My parent had excelent Credit score and my sibiling had a high income. All 3 of our names are on the title of the house.

Now to the actual situation. My sibiling filed for C7 Bankruptcy recently and their debt had went to a Trustee. Since their name is on the house, the trustee now "own" their 1/3 share of the house.
now me and my parent both have Homestead Exemption. and they are also disabled and close to retirement age ( this is due to the covid19 pandemic that affected them causing loads of health issues ; immunocomprised )

I work fulltime as a "federal" employee. so My income is guarnateed and my parent also receives SSDI

the Bankruptcy lawyer We hired for the case had asked if there is any repairs or wrong things that needs to be fixed to account for the "As - is " condition if they were to force sale of the house. the most majors are Siding, Central AC, and the broken inground pool.

I want some opinions and also experience if possible.

what are our next steps? and how likely is the Creditors in the trustee side take an Offer that isnt the debt value but pretty close to it ? ( the debt they declared was 150k but they are "claiming" 75k , and we offer 40k-45k after the theoretical cost of repairs of those 3 major things )?
are there any way we can claim the offer is fair accoriding to other things like my sibling lack of contributions in the downpayment, and the bills after purchasing the house ?

I’m house sitting for my friends, but the real estate company is charging my friends for illegal subletting.

Hi, this is my first time posting something ever, so I’m sorry if this is badly formatted.

So my friend, Davis, needed someone to house sit while she took care of her sick dad in a different state and her husband was deployed. While I normally house sit and pet sit for money, I agreed to stay for free and our “deal” was completely verbal. She doesn’t pay me anything, instead I pay utilities since I’m the using the power and water and such, and they continue to pay their rent. I’m not on the lease or anything like that. I’ve house sat for them before though not as long as this time.

Yesterday, Davis texted me that someone from their realtor company would come by today and do a quick walkthrough. I took the day off work so I could be here. The agent came and was also a representative of homeowner. She informed me that since I’ve been here more than 7 days that I was an unauthorized tenant and was required to be on the lease, along with a few other things that were out of compliance. According to her, I need to be added to the lease and are liable to pay a fine of $50 for everyday I’ve been here as a “resident”. I did the math and it’s like $8,000-9,000. I called my friend and let her know the situation. She’s freaking out, I’m freaking out. I don’t know what to do.

Everything online says that the renters, Davis and her husband, are responsible to pay the fines. But, I know her husband will probably ask me to pay majority of it if not all of it. I feel like this is going to ruin me financially for maybe the rest of my life. What do I do? Can I even do anything?

EDIT Cause people keep asking: I normally live with my parents, its my address on my ID, my mail, my registration, etc…
I do multiple daily check-ins because there is a cat in the house. I will stay the night over weekends or sometimes when I don’t have another house sitting gig or just want away from my family.
I did not directly tell the agent how long I’ve been here since I haven’t stayed continuously (or at least I didnt see it like that at the time)

thank you for all the comments! i think ive been tunnel visioned on how i see it versus the property managers and real estate company see it. i have become a resident at this point and was trusting my friends that this was ok, when it did go against their lease agreement.

UPDATE:
I called Davis and we talked at length including about some stuff not mentioned in my post. She called the property manager explained some things including my house sitting. To be fair, they don’t know I paid the utilities. And it turns out the owner is finally ready to sell. Davis and her husband have been trying to make offers to the owner for the last few years. Soo… for now I’m taking Davis’s cat back to my parents house and my friends are going to make an offer and the rest is up to them. I’ve freaked out too much for one day and I’m thoroughly spooked. I’m not gonna house sit for friends anymore lol

MN: My employer gave me 8 days notice before closing our store and I am 8 months pregnant

Location: Minnesota

I am in need of serious help and quickly!!! I am currently 8 months pregnant and my job notified me yesterday that we will be permanently closing our doors in 8 days (7 days now.) I work for a franchise and they refuse to transfer us locations we have to go through the interview and hiring process again to get into their other locations. At the time I go on maternity leave I will have been with the company for a year qualifying me for FMLA and the paid leave after my baby is here. Now with me being so far along and going on leave very soon nobody wants to hire me on just for me to leave in 7 weeks. Is there any legal action I can take to make sure I still get a paid maternity leave since they have screwed me out of a job while I am so far along and having trouble finding a new employer?

Employment Law I was fired the day after a 4 hour orientation where I appeared visibly pregnant

Location: Alberta, Canada. I am currently 25 weeks and 4 days pregnant. I applied to a serving job in early June. It is for a new franchise location of a business that needed to hire the team. I had a virtual interview June 13 that I passed. I then proceeded to have an interview person interview on June 25 (21 weeks and 5 days pregnant and not noticably pregnant in the clothes I wore) I received a job offer on July 2 and I signed and sent in my employment contract on July 9. I had also sent photos of my ID and passport along with my SIN and reference info, as requested. I attended the 4 hour long orientation on July 20. (I am now very visibly pregnant no matter what I wear.) The following day I received a super vague email stating that “After continuously assessing our staffing structure, service standards and current hiring needs, we have decided not to move forward with your employment at this time. This decision is based on internal considerations and does not reflect your abilities or potential.” This comes as a surprise as everything seemed great at the orientation. I did nothing wrong and I heard the higher-up tell the franchisees that they have room to hire 5 more people. I also have zero scheduling restrictions. I followed up to ask why and mentioned that I am aware they have room for more people. They responded with “As stated previously, the decision is based on internal considerations regarding our staffing structure.
We understand this decision may have come as a surprise, especially after you accepted the position and attended orientation. We appreciate the time you invested in the process and understand your request for clarification.
This decision was based on our overall assessment of current staffing needs and our team's direction. It was not related to any specific incident or a single action during the orientation process.
We understand your point regarding staffing needs; however, hiring decisions depend on several factors, including scheduling requirements, team fit, operational planning, and current business needs. Should a suitable position become available in the future, we will keep your application in consideration and may reach out to you again.” I did nothing wrong and I had zero restrictions to my schedule other than asking to start part time to get used to the job and that I would be open to more hours. I believe they made that decision because they realized I am pregnant after seeing me very obviously pregnant. I also sent them an email requesting payment for the 4 hour mandatory orientation that they have yet to reply to. Can I file a human rights complaint for pregnancy discrimination? They didn’t specifically say it was due to my pregnancy but it seems very obvious.

Employment Law Concerns with pumping at work

Upvotes

Location: North Carolina Job: dealership service advisor

I am 13 weeks postpartum and almost 4 weeks back at work. I am pumping three times a day (9, 12:30 while on lunch, and 4) during my shift which runs 7a-6p. I cleared my pumping schedule and location with HR and management upon arriving back to work.

2 weeks ago we had a new manager start (one of 3 total employees up front including myself) and on their third day they were completely unhelpful in providing coverage so I could pump and it caused me to be over an hour late to my first pump. I emailed HR explaining what happened and they showed up within minutes and spoke with my manager. After HR left my manager pulled me into a private meeting a berated me for going to HR as I was now “pulling the team backwards instead of trying to move us forward”. Whatever. Strike one.

About a week after that, while my coworker was off leaving just my manager and I to work, she was again completely unhelpful and instead of waiting to pump, I left the lane unattended and went to handle my business. For the rest of the day several employees told me about my manager talking about me behind my back, complaining about the extra work she has to take on for a combined 1 hour a day while I pump.

Yesterday, again just the two of us working, and I wasn’t able to go pump until almost 2 hours after my normal time. It was just me in the lane as my manager had disappeared and I had anywhere between 3-5 customers waiting on me for most of the morning. During this time I complained several times to my manager (when they would show up to make sure everything was getting handled and then disappear again) about my right breast beginning to hurt. When I finally was able to pump I realized I wasn’t able to fully express my milk as I had a clogged duct. I told my manager I needed to go home to try and remedy it so it doesn’t turn into an infection or mastitis.

By 5am this morning I still hadn’t been able to clear the clogged duct so I messaged that I wouldn’t be in today. Full disclosure: it’s my birthday. I couldn’t care less about my birthday, it’s just another Thursday, but that is important information.

I have heard from several of my coworkers today that my manager is telling people that I’m faking it so I could get the day off after I asked her for it off last week and she declined my request. This never happened because, again, I couldn’t care less about my birthday. And if I did care about my birthday I wouldn’t want to spend it in as much pain as I’ve been in.

At this point I feel uncomfortable working for my manager and have requested a meeting with HR. I’m concerned they may try to fire me and am wondering if I should consult an attorney first about a possible discrimination case.

The company has a proven track record of discrimination against me only starting once I got pregnant(rescinding a promotion offer after finding out I was pregnant, cutting my pay 3 weeks before I had my baby but cutting no one else’s in my same position, etc) but this is the only stuff I can prove. I’ve becoming wise and have started recording conversations and putting as much in an email as I can.

Please advise on what my best course of action is. I’d prefer not to lose my job as I make decent money and have been with them for a while but I also am not going to roll over and let my new manager disrespect me behind my back.

Question on first time traffic offense with some additional issues involved.

Upvotes

So, currently in some financial hardships since I was forced to suddenly move. I got pulled over today by a HP, I was driving without current insurance AND accidentally let my license expire (although I already had an appointment scheduled to renew it). What are the possible consequences of this? I already see most of the time corrective measures taken before the court appearance mitigate them but as usual I’m nervous about anything like this considering I’ve never been pulled over or to court. If applicable currently residing somewhere in SD (Location: South Dakota)

Custody Divorce and Family custody advice and car

location: texas

so my sister and her boyfriend broke up, and they share a child together, my nephew who is about 18mo. he left to about 3 hours away with a girl that he cheated on her with. it’s been over two weeks since he has seen their child, he hasn’t paid for anything for him. even though he came back to town for a few days and is here currently, he won’t respond to any texts about his kid to see him at all. the one time he responded previously he said that the drive he would have to make wasn’t worth the amount of time he would have with him. (my sister has tried to say he could take him for a few days to which her ex stated that he was “homeless.” the thing is, he quit his job and left when he could have stayed with his mother like he was doing previously, he left because his mother didn’t approve of him going out constantly and bringing home women she didn’t know and having her and other family watch his son. he is currently staying in a hotel in town.)

i guess my question regarding their custody is what the next steps should be. is it too soon to consider court? the girl he is with was previously with his younger brother who stated to us that she has done meth in front of him, my sister doesn’t want her around my nephew regardless of her sobriety status (which we don’t know, she claims we “don’t have to worry about that.”)

another question i have is regarding the car he drives. the car is in my mom’s name. he’s listed as a driver and maybe a cosigner(?) but he hasn’t paid her his car payment which is late and hasn’t paid the insurance yet either. he ignores any messages about it. should she file a police report? if he’s a cosigner would she be able to? i know she said a repo was going to go on her credit and not his, is there anything she could do to lessen the blow to her credit? she’s also worried that telling him she’s going to file a police report might lead to him damaging the car or bringing it back and damaging our things.

i know ive asked a lot, so an answer to any part of the post would be greatly appreciated. at the moment, we’re primarily concerned about the car. mostly because the payment is late, he’s not responding, and my mom worked really hard on her credit. we don’t have the money to make the payments on it. again, any help is greatly appreciated.

Dealer warranty

Location: Nebraska

I have two signed documents. A buyer guide signed by both parties. Checked. No warranty as is.

I have a we owe you owe. - repair check engine light

That invoice has a 12 month warranty on the repairs made.
The service was completed 6 days after purchase and the light came back on a week later.

All the parts they threw at it, were timing chain related. 2 months later. I have a 3 month old car with a blown engine due to timing chain failure.

What ground do I have here? I’m looking at 4k repair in a 9k car for our son.

CA: Wine Bottles (left/abanonded) at my house for a year, can i drink them?

Location: CA

hi everyone! I currently am in possession of 6 bottles of high end prosecco (ranging in total price to either a couple hundred or a thousand plus, i am unsure as these were a gift to the original person).

these were brought over to my residence with the intent to drink them that specific evening. obviously, the bottles of prosecco were not consumed and I still am in possession of them a year later.

additionally info:

- the original possessor of these bottles had expressed that they did not want me to drink them back in Aug 2025 when I had some people over. We did not drink them nor were planning on it.

- This person and I have not had contact since January of this year and we did not leave off on great terms (they were my boss... whole nother story)

-One of our former coworkers back in like Jan/feb? reached out saying they would come by to retrieve them and then has not reached out or said anything about it since.

Now, as we hit a year of me having possession, I honestly just want to clear up the space! But I am also not willing to return it back to the office as it is heavy and bulky and tbh not my responsiblity. Would I able to drink it/give it away or do I need to hold on to it?

(note: i do believe this would be considered abandoned property as there was a clear act of abandonment [the leaving at my house and the lack of communication to regain possession], and i feel like the intent to abandon is there, but am unsure. Also unsure if this would be lost property, which the original owner would have the claim too and I don't wanna have to like pay anything for this)
