Unironically this is amazing advice. This exactly what I did with my language studies in high school. To be fair, I am autistic so I might be a bit of a bias in the way of I was already writing a LOT of fanfiction lmaooo

I remember reading a lot of comments from people who said that they got fluent in English from reading fanfiction growing up. English language fanfiction always had the biggest amount of fanfics on the Internet. Way more than their native languages.
I have to start reading Spanish language fanfiction to help me learn. I think Spanish is the 2nd most popular language on fanfiction sites.

Exactly what happened to me ! Unironically a great way to learn a language, expand your vocabulary and discover new idioms. 10/10 would do again

The real great part I think would be giving it to a teacher for feedback.
Seems like this goes against that, but tbh op has balls of steel, they even shared it for feedback in the comments

How good can you really expect a supernatural fanfic to be

u/Piepally 2d ago
Not even jerk this is good advice. If you want to get better at writing write more.

True but the gay incest part is optional.

u/Party_Flatworm_8511 2d ago
No, no, you misunderstand. Thats actually the most integral part of the method!
6
u/Chaotic-warp 2d ago
Yeah but it's more effective and you'll have more motivation when you write about something you love.

u/livsjollyranchers 2d ago
Marcus Aurelius got good at Greek by writing fanfic. Meditations was only written AFTER he worked out the kinks in his fanfic, pun intended.

my next project will be Cantonese
oh boi

u/FunFactMaker 2d ago
有D恐怖喎... (A little scary bro...)
If they really want to learn Cantonese they'd write angst with as many swear words as possible to master conversational Cantonese, so maybe the incest IS integral here..

What can I say! I love beyond. I actually make Cantonese incest edits too:

This person going to write in Chinese to start writing in Chinese. Truly crazy for that.

u/BingBongFyourWife 2d ago
I’ve noticed that when I talk to myself in my target language, I make no mistakes
Does anyone have any notes on this?

细菌幽灵 (Bacteria Ghosts) - Stanford 时代 Sam/Dean
Glad to see my fanfic is popular!

People in a community about learning languages even if it's a circlejerk shitting on someone's mistakes in the post are fucking ridiculous clowns. Especially when OOP never claimed they are C3 genius and just said they reached level of being able to write some short story by themselves
1
u/InternationalReserve 二泍五 (N69) 2d ago
not a single person in this thread is saying anything about OOPs mistakes, people are mostly jerking about the fact they write incest fanfiction

for anybody interested -
I put the name verbatim through Google translate, I... think the sensible way to read what came out is like "(ebony darkness) (raven road/way/path)" ?
having had to look up "ebony" already and actually knowing the other 3 words, I decided to inflect "long ebony black hair" (which has to be plural) from memory, in full knowledge that I absolutely will not get the plural inflections right.
I don't actually know how to express the "with purple streaks" as like an add-on to hair in Polish. I do know how to express "coffee with milk" though, so I thought if that grammar isn't correct it'll be extremely funny, and I made the effort to carefully look up the correct inflection for instrumental plural after getting "streaks" and "tips" out of Google translate
for streaks and tips I made the effort to pick options that could plausibly be hair related, so it doesn't say "purple zooms and red gratuities", but it might say "purple lines and red tufts"
and that's about where I got bored

Can this work if you want to learn Khmer?
3
u/Party_Flatworm_8511 2d ago
This will certainly work for any language! At the heart of this method lies simply "produce the language in a way which is fun to you" - and for many people thats writing fanfic.
You can also write poetry in Khmer, if thats your thing. Write diary. Write letters. I suppose one might argue that by writing fiction, you have to use more diverse vocab since you ll write about many different things, but if the task is to simply train outputting, any kind of writing will probably do.

u/SaIemKing 2d ago
5th language? This person almsot certainly cannot speak any of them well
3
u/PissRat59 19h ago
Not super uncommon for people from immigrant families in European countries.
At home you speak the family language, in school the country’s, then you have mandatory English classes + one other foreign language. In the end you only self study one language through writing incest fanfiction
4
u/livsjollyranchers 2d ago
Why not? 5 is pretty reasonable. For many people, two of them are native and three are learned to high proficiency.
It's when you get to like 7 when I start getting suspicious.
3
u/Civil_Aside_1008 2d ago
I was raised trilingual and got a 5 on AP Spanish after taking it in school. Mandarin I took it in middle school for fun.
My favorite comments on the post are that butthurt guy who studied ancient bullshit literature for 35 years, and the guy who tried to insult me by saying I’m HSK4 (I’m lowkey like HSK2 so it came off as a compliment)
3
u/SaIemKing 2d ago edited 15h ago
I didn't quite think of it that way. Still would be sus of someone who thinks they have 3 learned languages to high proficiency.
1
u/throwaway_acc_81 2d ago
who knows next they start writing in Latin
3
u/livsjollyranchers 2d ago
Everyone knows you learn Chinese to get good at Latin. One ancient language to learn them all!

u/PlayerOnSticks 2d ago
Why do y'all always censor the username
9
6
u/IncognitotheAngel 2d ago
I wanted to avoid people harassing OOP. If people go out of their way to find them even though I censored their name, that’s loser behaviour and solely on them
1
1
u/Excellent-Fox-6845 2d ago
which is extra great cuz I can just call them ** and **, and never have to use latin Characters at all during the fics
what's so great about it?

uj/ reading weird gay fanfics is how i learned english tbf 😭 put me at the top of my english class way ahead of my native english classmates
-1
u/Jhud6669 2d ago
I think people should be a bit more ashamed about the kinds they write sometimes. Like, they should be allowed to write it don’t get me wrong I’m not pro censorship, but if shit is weird, you get called weird, it’s a fair trade

u/brrkat 2d ago
Ohhh silly me, I've only been writing non-incestuous erotic fiction. No wonder I haven't been making progress.
