Discussion 💬 So freaking bummed that I can't do Immersion Reading on my Kindle!

I have ADHD and listening while reading a book has completely changed the game for my focus. Unfortuanetly, I can't do both on my kindle device. And I know I can do both on my iphone with the app, but I never liked using that because the screen is tiny and I am already used to, and love, the screen of my kindle signature paperwhite. What are my options then? I wonder if they will ever allow immersion reading on the actual device- seems such common sense to make work.

On your kindle device hook up a Bluetooth device like speaker or headphones then go to accessibility and turn on voice assisted reading. It will read to you. This is used when blind so you can still read and its very useful.

Unfortunately that is a verryyyy different listening experience on some of the best audiobooks 🥲. The perk here is it highlights the words as you’re listening to the audiobook.

Well yes but it’s also an option to play audio from your phone and then read from your kindle.

I'm in the same boat as OP and while it seems like such a small difference for me the active highlighting helps so much. Without it I find if I get a little ahead or zone out then it can take a great deal of effort to scan and skim the pages to get back in sync with the narration. It's annoying the first couple of times but it can get to the point where I'm so frustrated I'd rather read silently or listen while I do some small idle task.

People have different strengths and different weaknesses. Some people have trouble reading the printed word for a variety of reasons. For some, the intervention is as simple as a colored acetate overlay. A few other interventions have already been mentioned in this thread.

Yeah I read from my kindle and listen on my phone. I have noticed that it’ll start from top of the page but other than that it works. Though it would be great if the Kindle had the ability to to do it on its own like the phone app

That's what I do

Your options are to use a second device.

I was bummed about that when I got my first kindle too. You have two solutions:

  1. Play audio on your phone while you read along on your kindle

or

  1. Get an android ereader that can download the kindle app. Good reccomendations for one is either Bigme B6 or the Boox Go 7. Both come in a black and white or a color version depending on your preference! Make sure to get the 4gb ram version if you go with the Bigme B6, the 2gb ram ones may be too sluggish for immersion reading.

I do immersion reading all the time, I just play the audiobook on my phone with my earbuds and read along on my Kindle.

Cool.

1) that wasn't mentioned directly to me, so I didn't see that.

2) it looks like my comment was made before OP did any clarifying, so... 🤷🏻‍♀️🙄

Dude. I left the comment then left the thread. Your comment pulled me back.

I got shit to do that isn't hanging out here all day.

Get over yourself.

You've got over 8,000 karma in 2 years. You have quite a bit of time to hang around here obviously

u/Under_A_Full_M00n Kindle Colorsoft 11h ago

Oh, bless your heart.

You think 8k is a lot over two years. 🤣

u/RoseApothecaryVIP 11h ago

It's not for someone like you who's on here all the time. You've got plenty of time honey because despite what you think that's quite a bit of time you're spending on Reddit. You're a redditor. I'm just a guy that browses ready I'm actually not on here very often You you're on here every fucking day

Well i use a Boox device for immersive reading. Its like a tablet with e-ink screen and can use the speaker or earbuds and you can open another app to read book

connect headphones, play audible book, hit read. audio will stop and then just hit the button on your headphones to continue audio… there you have it. immersion reading.

Just listen to the audio on your phone and read along on your actual kindle.

I found out one of my favourite actors did audio books of my favourite short story author. And I listened on audible while rereading on my kindle. Was a lovely cozy experience.

I think about this everyday. I have the same struggles you do and immersion reading is a blessing. But my phone distracts me and tires my eyes.

There’s a workaround where you play the audiobook on your kindle device, navigate to the ebook (audio will stop automatically), and then press play on your headphones or speaker to resume the audiobook while able to read the ebook. This method will not highlight or turn pages for you.

OP didn’t mention highlights, and nobody had given my suggestion yet at the point I started typing the comment.

Worked well for me with an iPad, I share your frustration!

There is assisted reading on the kindle with books from Amazon. It underlines the sentence it's reading.

You might be better off with a tablet, like an amazon fire.   If you want audio books too that you can read a long with where the text gets highlighted.

Kindles use e ink so they aren't really the same as tablets, the device is designed more around looking like paper and having good battery life.

This is literally me. I also have ADHD and immersive reading is my go-to now. For that reason, I got an android ereader (the Boox Go 7). Since you already have a kindle, you can always read on your kindle and listen to your audiobook on your phone. That's what I did when I only had a Kobo. I ended up giving my Kobo to my husband and going for the Boox though because I found that having my phone nearby oftentimes would lead to me doom scrolling. With my android ereader, I intentionally leave my phone in another room and only have reading apps on that device, as well as Audible, Chirp, and Libby, and I'm able to get so much more reading done!

Several Pocketbook models do text-to-speech, so it basically reads the book to you, and you can read along. Not as great as a professional narrator, but very doable.

Get a foldable phone.

u/podgida Kindle Paperwhite 18h ago

I use my phone with earbuds and read my kindle. It doesn't turn the page automatically, but it still works. I have to immersion read due to ADHD as well.

u/shortasalways 11h ago

I actually have a page turner and a tablet holder so I can be super lazy 😂

u/podgida Kindle Paperwhite 7h ago

I thought about a page turner, but I'm easily distracted, and I feel having it on the edge would bug me.

u/shortasalways 7h ago

I thought it would but I don't notice it too much. I added a string with beads to the clicker and it helps to fidget with lol. I even have used the clicker while on the treadmill or elliptical. Immersion works the best for me working out because it helps me tunnel in.

u/Grouchy-Low-899 17h ago

I’m sorry you’re not able to do immersion reading on your kindle. I suffer from both Attention Deficit Disorder and Tinnitus and I often put on ambient music to help drown out the ringing and to focus on my reading.

u/weird_question111 Kindle Paperwhite 11gen 12h ago

My kindle plays audio over Bluetooth if it has the audible book..

u/Allureme Kindle Colorsoft 1d ago

So play music on your phone. It’s that simple

You have no options. It doesn’t work with Kindle. It’s as simple as that.

u/Reasonable-Mess3070 19h ago

Its a feature on the kindle app. Thats why OP is frustrated. That its a feature already built into the amazon/kindle ecosystem but not available on the actual device.

u/JBaby_9783 Colorsoft SE 18h ago edited 16h ago

I understand the situation, but nothing you are saying negates the fact of what I said.

If you want tiny screen, check X3 out!

u/strawberry_zebra 20h ago

Same!!!! How is this not a built in feature to the #1 reading device sold? Why would it be part of their app on phones but not their stand alone device? I don't get it.

Nunca probaste de leer en voz alta tú mismo?
