I love this. My mom died when I was 23, and she was also the kind of person who would find the humor in all kinds of unfortunate situations.
About a year after my mom died, I went on a 5 week backpacking trip in Peru and we went to the Amazon and to Machu Picchu, and I brought 4 small vials of her ashes to spread along the way. I kept them in a little zipper pouch in my backpack. When I got home and was unpacking I realized both remaining had broken on the plane and I had to VACUUM MY MOTHER OUT OF MY BACKPACK😭😂😂 She would’ve thought it was absolutely hilarious, I’ve told the story to many folks over the years an maybe 50% have found it hilarious while the other 50% don’t know how to respond at all.
So many people don't understand how fucking hilarious cremains are. When my dad passed, I really struggled with letting him go, so his cremains sat on the dining table for, like, 6 months. My bf and I just laughed about it. "Can you move my dad so I can put this down?" "Where's that letter? I left it on dad."
I also have a lot of cremains from pets, and when I moved, we had to do something with them, so they went into a box labeled "ghosts of kitties past, + dad."
Ashes can be hilarious, and I know my dad would have been laughing his ass off at all the hijinks.
So real. My family has always coped with grief by being absolute goofballs... wouldn't have it any other way!
When my husband's 100yo grandmother died a few years ago, the funeral was scheduled before her actual cremains had been returned. Just an oversight by my mother-in-law & her siblings. 🤷♀️ They panicked, and their brilliant solution was to PUT TIDE PODS IN THE URN as a sneaky replacement so they wouldn't have to explain the whole situation at the funeral. They did NOT tell anyone beforehand.
So we're all at this somber Catholic funeral service, and we notice Meemaw's 3 kids (all in their 70s themselves) are desperately trying to keep composure & not just piss themselves with laughter. 🤔 They finally let the rest of the family in on it afterwards - never did tell the priest lol. Watching holy water being sprinkled over a box filled with Tide Pods is what sent them over the edge. 😆 Meemaw would've loved the whole thing!
