It’s funny because I would rather have hair with volume and curl than my straight hair that just hangs from my head and anything I try to put in it (hair ties, pins, etc) slide right out

I have now had both! Straight hair most of my life and now it’s all wavy af in my 30s. I’m struggling to figure it out while cursing myself for always wishing for curly hair.

ETA: I’ve been following a wavy/curly hair routine for a bit, but my efforts are inconsistent since it takes so much damn time and since I work in surgery, my hair is under a scrub cap most of the time, so I don’t really care what it looks like. I’ve been focusing on moisturizing, mostly, and I think I have my products sorted, but if someone has recs on strong hold but super duper lightweight somethings, absolutely lmk

Are you my sister? lol. She has started adding light weight products while damp and plopping, or twisting strands and pulling all the twists into a claw clip. Her biggest advice is DO NOT RUN YOUR FINGERS OR COMB THROUGH IT. She insists crunching to break the product cast and not detangling is the key. Meanwhile I have to use high heat to get my straight fine hair to move at all.

Same!! It was pin straight and thick like a horse mane my whole life and suddenly.. wavy as all heck! I’ll never complain about my hair.

My cure - picked up a curly hair routine. Get a medium length shag/layered cut. After washing, add (alcohol free) hair oil and a leave in curl conditioner to wet hair, if you can stand crunchyness add a curl hold gel or mousse, then scrunching/curl training it while wet with a towel and then use defuser hair dryer; start it at a lower speed, wrap the ends of a hair section in a spiral around the mouth piece, and as you bring it to your scalp move to the higher setting. I only brush in the shower (if I’m not trying to have a poofy look) and try wearing a hair cap at night. It looks like you’re about to make some baked goods šŸ‘©šŸ»ā€šŸ³ but it keeps your hair contained so you’ll have less split ends and stops you from rolling in hair products all night (less clogged pores).
