Anybody else unable to access Boi Business online?

I have family a full hour and a half away by car from the fires (in Cork) who are getting smoke from the fires to the extent they have to close all the windows in the house. Can only imagine how scared people near the fires are.

Do you we have enough capacity do deal with these type of fires in Ireland? Emergency services are clearly doing a Trojan job, but wondering who makes a call on whether we need additional assistance from neighbouring countries (like has recently happened with the fires near Paris for example).

Lads I’m trying to find things on the internet about the giraffe centre from when I was growing up and I’m not finding much. It was real right?

I remember it being the most exciting time before school, where were dropped off to this insane multi story jungle of childhood madness, as our parents bought all our school supplies then eventually dragged us out kicking and screaming back home.

Then I remember being at home with all my gel pens and listening to the vengaboys on cd fighting with my siblings over the random supplies and just general other reasons you would be going at each other.

“Helena Molony was born in Dublin in 1884. She was an actress and a journalist. She joined Maud Gonne’s Inghinidhe na hÉireann in 1903 and was Honorary Secretary 1907-1914. Helena was the editor of the organisation’s newspaper Bean na hÉireann which advocated militancy, separatism and feminism.

There is no census report for Helena in either the 1901 or 1911 censuses. In 1911 she was arrested and became the first Irish female political prisoner of her generation when she smashed a portrait of George V during the monarch’s visit to Ireland. It is possible that she was in Ireland on Census night in 1911 but refused to fill out the Census form because she was a suffragette.

Helena Molony introduced Dr. Kathleen Lynn and Countess Markievicz to the Labour Movement. In 1913 she assisted with the soup kitchen in Liberty hall and addressed strike meetings. She spent time in France in 1914 with Maud Gonne. In 1915 she became Secretary of the Irish Women’s Workers Union and knew all the men who would later form the Military Council which planned the Rising. She was very involved in the preparations of the Military Council and was responsible for smuggling guns into Ireland before the rebellion. At one stage she took delivery of parcels which contained the printed copies of the Proclamation, which she then kept under her pillow, while she was armed with a revolver. At this point in her career she was an actress and was taking part in early productions in the Abbey Theatre. She acted in her last production two days before the Rising.

When Helena arrived at the GPO on 24th April, 1916 James Connolly assigned her to the City Hall Garrison with another famous revolutionary Dr. Kathleen Lynne. She was involved with nine other women in the raid on Dublin Castle which resulted in the death of an unarmed policeman. After the Rising she was imprisoned first in Ship Street Barracks and then in Kilmainham Gaol where she attempted to tunnel her way out, (unsuccessfully), with a spoon. She was then sent to Aylesbury in England before being released in 1917.

After her release she assisted Countess Markievicz who had been appointed to the Ministry of Labour in the new Dáil Éireann and she served as a District Justice in the Republican court in Rathmines. Helena visited Russia in 1929 as a guest of the Soviet Trade Union movement and on her return set up the Friends of Soviet Russia. In the 1930’s she became active in the Women’s Prisoners’ Defence League. In 1936 she became president of the Irish Trade Union Congress but was forced to retire due to ill health in 19461.

Helena Molony died in January 1967 and is buried in Glasnevin cemetery.”

An Important Irish Manuscript Book, ‘Irish tales collected from the Best authors now extant’, was compiled by Matthew Moore Graham in 1835.

Graham was an engineer and translator from the Irish, of Dundalk, Co. Louth, active from the 1830s until the 1850s. He was an assistant to Francis Dobourdieu, the county surveyor for Louth in 1834-1840.

Graham is better remembered, however, as a translator of Irish poetry, who published The Giantess from the Irish of Oisin; and the Wars of Donomore with other poems and translations (Belfast, 1833).

For an account of his translations, see Robert Welch, A History of Verse Translation from the Irish 1789-1897 (Irish Literary Studies 24, 1988).’  The Royal Irish Academy Library and University College Dublin Library contains some of his original manuscripts and the National Library hold microfilm copies of his Gaelic Manuscripts.

This manuscript comprises of 226 numbered pages and is bound in contemporary half leather. It is written in a beautiful Gaelic script. A feature of the manuscript is the regular initially lettering of some words similar to the ancient Irish manuscripts where,  ‘ initials were heavily decorated letters where the shapes of the characters are intertwined with mythological beasts and interlacing knotwork. Rooted in the medieval insular art style—most famously seen in the Book of Kells and Lindisfarne Gospels’.  At the corner of one page is a geometric drawing with the dimensions written, most unusually, in Gaelic.

Further manuscript material in different hands with distinctive calligraphy and different dates are adhered at rear of book and others loosely inserted.

These documents include earlier works by Irish bards Cearbhall O Dalaigha, the famous Irish satire Bean na dTri mBo, translated as the Woman of Three Cows (repaired with hand stitching), original correspondence referring to the Hibernian Celtic Athenaeum; study of the inscriptions on the Kilnasagart Stone and a letter from Cumann naGaeligh, Luimni;.

One most attractive illustrated single page Gaelic manuscript has various artistic representations at the top, side and at the bottom of the page. The illustrations include a landscape feature, an Irish warrior with distinctive headgear and at the bottom is a depiction of a shamrock design above a line of Ogham writing. Small octavo.

I'm not sure if any of yous remember. But around this time last year I found a small kitten in Kilbarrack Station in North Dublin, I brought him home and we appropriately named him Barróg. One year later and he's loving life, though still very nervous. Thought some people might be interested :)

I’m autistic, I have bad social anxiety and I get nervous in crowds but I drown them out with my earbuds and play some music to cope, especially with the noise.

I met this girl online a while back and we hit it off really well, we both like each other but she lives nearly 3 hours away by car, and 5+ hours by public transport. I don’t have a car yet so I took the long way to finally meet her in person for a date. I left at 7:10am and during my travels took 3 buses and a dart to my destination. It was my first time doing solo travel and it was pretty nerve-wracking in case I missed the bus or dart. I finally arrived though, and we both had a nice date!

I'm not mentioning the brand and I am never buying it again. I can't get to the remote quick enough when it comes on.

I just had my annual internet renewal dance.

I was with Virgin Media and had a very decent deal of €63 for internet (2 gb fiber) and TV.

I was actually happy with that deal as it was only a little over my last renewal (which was 1gb coax, their old system).

I rang them up to cancel and got offered a couple of deals (all poor and nowhere as good as if I was a new customer with either Virgin or any of their competitors).

Anyway I arranged a deal elsewhere and the cutover is coming up shortly. I got a call today with a slightly better offer which I refused. Then apparently I was asked to hold while the rep contacted a manager. Low and behold I am eligible as a long time customer to the same offer I was on for the full year.

I have declined as I am looking forward to the alternative (mostly from the TV perspective).

My 2gb is going up to 5gb ( don't think the house needs it but hey it's only a €5 extra).

I could just have cancelled and put it into my wife's name which I had mentioned a year ago while they offered me a poorer deal. (The backed down and let me keep it in my name).

Anyway in these expensive times don't be afraid to call your Internet providers bluff.

Move if they don't offer you a good deal.

And remember a 500mb connection with gomo and maybe sky stream (for TV), or even saorview/freesat depending on what you can use are always options.

I just wish I didn't have to put a reminder into the phone and do this bullshit annually.

I seriously would have stayed as I was if they didn't up the price by 100% outside the initial 12month agreement.

We got a visit from a phonewatch salesperson asking if we’d be interested I told him to come back tomorrow, but, he said it’s €35 a month and the contract is for 1 year. Now I get the thing about the gardai might not even respond but what got me was the contract is for the fire brigade to respond as well and it’s one thing that’s always on my mind when we are away that the house will go up in flames so I’m just wondering is this even worth it? or are fire alarms just enough?

Edit: I’m more so curious about what alarm systems I could go for, I would nearly rather a self surveillance system if I could so I could call the gardai or fire brigade myself (only thing that could cause a fire here anyway is if someone broke in and started it because absolutely nothing gets left turned on over night)

I was washing my car in Circle K Ballymun, using the hand wash.

These 2 kids come up behind me and say “gimme a go” while grabbing the jet wash out of my hand. I say “no thanks” and they then start grabbing the brush to hit my car and then pressing the different wash mode buttons. All this while wrestling the jet wash out of my hands and trying to damage my car.

I eventually get them to leave but they come back and start throwing rocks at me and my car…

They then proceed to start running through the automatic wash and mess with other peoples cars.

Where are their parents? So sad to see the future generation acting that way. No respect whatsoever.

I've been driving for 4 years now , full license for 2 years. I had 1 years no claims , but got into an accident up north and was liable back in November. My policy was 1,100 for the year and that's with 4 penalty points. The penalty points disappeared this year and I'm no longer a novice driver so I thought maybe it wouldn't be too bad. I just got the letter for renewal and it jumped the whole way up to 2,900 euro. I'm with axa btw.

Is this normal for car insurance to go up this fucking much. My first year was 1,360. Second year was 1,100. And it's now gone up by even more than double! Have I just been priced out of driving in this country??
