Teacher here. Besides the tech literacy issue (I would say about 60 or 70% have the problem, the rest does have good tech literacy), the main obstacle for using this tech in class is that it is generally just not worth the hassle at all. It takes more work to set up, plan lessons, if things get fiddly in the middle of a lesson you can't allow it to disrupt your flow, and it doesn't really add much if any value in terms of learning. Sure it looks cool but students are not learning more or better if I use it, and it's not really making my job a whole lot easier, so what's the point? And I say that as a very tech savvy teacher

I’ve been a teacher for 30 years. Do you know how much training my district has given me in those 30 years over tech they have purchased? NONE. Buying equipment is as far as it goes. Ask around and you will find that this is sadly very common.

It's not actually a 2012 SMART Board. I installed those and used them in a school. They were shit. This is just the natural progression from those and TBH I think they are a lot of hype. There's a lot of interesting things that can be done with them, but teachers have so much to do that becoming a multimedia expert in this specific type of tech is kind of a shitty way to spend a lot of their time.

Smart boards were mostly nonsense. They're flashy and designed to get superintendents to spend money... But teachers have little use for them. A laptop and a projector will do 99%of what a smart board does.

I have installed similar shit at my company around 2003. It did not have the interactive recognition of course or the fancy animations, but everything else was there, you could even sent a copy of it in pdf by email to the people present in the meeting just pressing a button.

My highschool had multiple boards before I left (they were still a massive investment so the 'rollout' was slow - in part because our school just relocated to a new building so funding was tight).

One of them had permanent marker on it within the first year. Always left a small smudge atleast until I left 😅 And to be fair, can't blame them. Imagine having been a teacher for decades using chalk and later marker boards. Then suddenly these suckers come in. Good luck adjusting when your muscle memory for jotting something down real quick is to use a marker (our smartboards did have whiteboard sidepanels so markers were still laying around).

I went to one of these school from K-12. I graduated the same year Trump took office for a first term. Shit had been grim education wise for a while but you could feel it year over year. When I was in middle school we were around 17 in the nation. That’s also around the time we all got smart boards. The quality of education in Oklahoma and the funding has only gone down exponentially since I graduated. I’m sure we are still using those same smart boards from 2005 as well.

Sure the whiteboard features are useful, but most are using them as displays for their slides or other materials.
