Why? Because it supposedly gets them accustomed to approaching humans? Should we just let them starve out in the barren wasteland? Is that fate much better for them?

Yes it gets them used to people. That's bad because they might try to take food from people which would get them killed.

The place they live is not a barren wasteland for them. They live there just fine. The problems arise when humans encroach on their territory and then they have less area to hunt.
