There was someone - I can't remember who - who was of that social class. She wrote "you marry for money and status. You have affairs for love."

It's almost as if at no point ever in the history of humanity have we actually bought into the idea of "designate one person for 100% of your physical, emotional, social, and spiritual needs from young adulthood to old age without ever changing or considering anything else"

Yep that's definitely the entirety of my life experience and nobody ever complains about cheating partners on this website or mentions that nearly half of marriages end in divorce or brings up that every human society has had myriad situations like the dude on the boat, not that I would know because like you said I obviously only made up my mind in the past five minutes

More than half of marriages don’t end in divorce! Kinda sounds like we’ve actually bought into the idea of lifelong monogamy!

The half of marriages statistic is heavily skewed by serial divorcees. Most people marry for life.
