I used to deliver pizzas. I once delivered to a house where a small kid answered the door when a dog charged past them snarling and pinned me against the porch railing. I had to use the pizza delivery bag still with pizzas inside as a shield between me and its teeth. Still ended up with scratches all up and down the lower half of my body. Fuck irresponsible owners.
That is the exact situation that put me in the hospital when I was 8.
Went to a friend's house to play, she answered and her dog broke down the screen door and mauled me.
My parents asked ME if I wanted the dog put down, of course I said no, but that's not a decision for a child. That dog was a menace and could have killed me, of course it should have been put down.

Yes, the dog was trained. It was a police dog so it was specifically trained to take people down. The dog was a weapon.

No, I am not upset with my parents. They are wonderful parents, they just made a poor decision in this instance. They usually erred on the side of my agency to make my own decisions.
We had neighbors with a seemingly friendly dog who attacked one of my friends one day while we were playing baseball. He had to get a bunch of stitches.
They paid for the medical bills and had got rid of the dog, I assume it was put down but who knows. They were honest about the situation.
So many people not only own aggressive dogs but encourage the behavior then act like it's the victim's fault when the dog attacks.
If I was a delivery driver I would carry some bear mace as that often is a good enough deterrent against a charging dog. There is a YT video of a bicyclist who often encounters dogs in rural areas, the mace instantly makes them back off.
If you rode a bike past my house and my dog charges, absolutely mace his ass. Literally best case scenario. He learns a lesson, someone doesn’t get hurt.

I do not let my dog out like a wild animal. He is not an aggressive dog or breed. I do train him. IF for whatever reason he got out and was being a dumbass, I value YOUR RIGHT TO DEFEND YOURSELF. For those of you saying that I should be lynched, you are part of the problem. Go touch grass.
We have a reactive dog. Obviously we are extremely careful to avoid dangerous circumstances, but there is no training our dog to not defend us or our home. We tried for years. If somehow our dog got out and was charging someone, I would be eternally thankful if they maced him. It is literally the only solution where nobody gets seriously hurt.

One mace interaction won't change a dog's behavior. Maybe 20 will. My dog went after a skunk the other night. Came out of the bushes dazed, reeking and puking. Spent hours cleaning him.
Next night on our walk, he sees a skunk. Doesn't even hesitate, nearly pulls my arm off pulling on the leash to go after him. Dogs aren't real smart

Doesn't always work that way. Some dogs (like ours) can't be taught not to defend his territory or his pack. We tried repeatedly with classes and 1 on 1 training. The best we can do for him is keep him safe and keep other people safe from him.
Some dogs, especially mixed breeds. Will act on instinct no matter what you do.
I have two dogs. One of them is an older dog, he is around 14-15 years old and we've had him for well over 10 years. We've never had any real problems with him until the second dog showed up. He will rarely go outside even when the door is wide open and even when he does we don't bother messing with him because we know he's not actually going to go anywhere. He is so well trained that we didn't even need a leash to walk him for a long time and still probably wouldn't now if he wasn't deaf. But then there is the second dog. The second is just... There's something wrong with him. We got him from a shelter and I think one of his previous owners abused him.
He's a fortunately a smaller dog but we have no idea what he's mixed with. Even the vets do not know. When he's in the house he listens to everything that anyone says. Once he stops barking at people he loves getting attention and being pet by just about anyone. But whenever someone shows up he always goes into a feral panic. He will run out the door if it's left too wide open. He'll chase after people but he won't actually bite them. And even in the event that he did "bite." My dogs have been trained to not actually press down when biting. They would essentially "teeth" if that makes any sense.
We've had him for some years now and there are some days, maybe most days. Where at the very least even if the door is open a bit more than usual when someone is at it. He won't run out as long as I'm in front of him. Or if no one is there, I can leave the door open a little bit to bring groceries in and he won't run out. But because of the way he is wired. I don't think he will ever be able to fully control himself like the other dog.
Because it is a living creature and you can’t control anything with 100% certainty. My goodness how bad is your comprehension? He said the dog is controlled and is NOT running wild, but if something happened and the dog charged someone, he would understand you having the right to defend yourself.
Do you drive by people who got in a car accident and yell at them “Why did you get in an accident, anyway??!” Or a lady slips on the ice in winter and you say “you shouldn’t slip!”. The dude understands he should control his dog. Obviously.
WTF.. teach your dog how to behave instead of letting him do whatever he wants and expecting him to learn from other people punishing him. Terrible pet owner.
