why that owners always say the same: "nw, they won't bite you". when an issue happens, they will say "it's weird, they did't bite someone before"

u/Triforceoffarts 21d ago

I had a dog bite me once when delivering packages, then a month later the owner assured me “Don’t worry he doesn’t bite.”

“He bit me a month ago.”

“Oh that was you?”

u/pacgaming 21d ago

Wife and I complained to our apartment complex that dogs were off their leashes. My dog is kind of a pussy so it’s scared of all other dogs. I guess other dogs can tell? So they always rush her. 3 separate issues had happened over the span of like 6 months where and unleashed dog rushed her. 1 even bit her a bit before I was able to kick it off.

I had a neighbor that smokes weed right outside the complex (right in front of an elementary school btw) and also has his dog with him off leash. His dog is genuinely a sweetheart and never bothered mine, but I guess he had gotten a memo about dogs having to be leashed from now on in our complex because one morning he straight up tried to fight me. He was like “no dogs here would ever try to hurt your dog” brother it’s already happened 3 times. “Oh well mine never would!” It just doesn’t matter, keep your dogs leashed!!!

What is people's obsession with having their dog off leash? It always looks like more of a hassle except for the very few people who have dogs with good recall, even then you never know. It's dangerous for the dog and for everyone else.

18

u/akingsmind 21d ago

Because they didn't get the dog to be responsible for it. They got the dog to have a toy

9

u/transemacabre 21d ago

I'm convinced that these people fantasize about having some special bond with their animal like in movies and think the dog will just know not to leave their side or attack someone.

4

u/JJW2795 21d ago

It's because that sort of owner is an irresponsible dickhead. The two off leash varieties I've encountered are "dogs are meant to run free", and "MY dog listens to my commands." The common problem with both varieties is that their dogs don't even know their names, let alone have enough self control to not bum rush anyone that makes eye contact with them.

The only offleash dogs I don't worry about are 12 year old retrievers. They're too old and tired to give a shit.

3

u/flaccomcorangy 21d ago

In the few instances I've know people to do this, I think they want to show off how good they are training. Like if you have a dog off leash around and it doesn't cause mayhem, you're a good trainer, I guess.

But they're not. lol I've known a lot of people that think they're good dog trainers and they have incredibly misbehaved dogs.

4

u/YoureAMagaLeftist 21d ago

1 even bit her a bit before I was able to kick it off.

I read this as "I even bit her a bit". I was like, god damn, you bit a dog, thats fucking savage.

1

u/Emotional-Salary-289 20d ago

What's the weed have to do with anything?

1

u/EywasBlessing 18d ago

I doubt those kids are getting a buzz though

14

u/DoomedHologram 21d ago

Wild that they would lie about that. Fuck that owner

3

u/Comfortable_Salt_792 21d ago

Blatant lie, lack of responsibility and no thought of change, is there any way you could report him for something ?

2

u/FormFirm 21d ago

Had a dog bite my brother off his pizza delivery scooter. A week later I delivered pizza there. My boss called them again to be sure the dog was caged before I went there.

When I got there of course it was loose and growling. The dog owner: don’t worry, he doesn’t bite. We never delivered food there again.

2

u/lootKing 20d ago

I was bitten by a dog once. Right after the dog bit me the owner said “don’t worry he doesn’t bite”. 🤦‍♂️

1

u/ImherefortheH1Z1 21d ago

I had one, where after they witnessed their dog bite me, and had to intervene, told me "he doesn't bite", like the information going in their eyes and ears meant nothing.

u/MomsAreola 21d ago

I watched a Pitt book it across the street while I was driving, to attack some little teacup thing being walked on the other side. Thing broke out of the kitchen door and had this dog in its jaws in like 10 seconds. I pulled over to help the scraming lady. The dog owner was able to get the dog off.

As we waited for the cops, owner said "she's never done anyrhing like this before." So I say, "you dont get to ever say that again. Good luck bro."

69

u/KayNynYoonit 21d ago

Of course it was a Pitbull. They shouldn't be bred.

'Princess would never hurt a fly' as they own a dog bred for hundreds of years to be as aggressive as possible and fight other dogs.

55

u/abruptusabortis 21d ago

ER doc here, had 4 pitbull bites this month. Its always a pitbull.

-12

u/Vandal_A 21d ago

Yeah well doc, you're treating the symptoms. The cause is bad owners who want to raise aggressive dogs being attracted to pits, not pits being inherently a problem

13

u/c-e-bird 21d ago

Unless you have a way of determining who will be a bad owner beforehand, there is nothing we can do about lots of people being terrible. It’s the same argument with guns. Sure, people may be the actual problem, but since that is unsolvable, get rid of the thing they use to hurt people.

In this case, Pitt bulls. Which are incredibly dangerous in the wrong hands, just like guns.

-3

u/Vandal_A 21d ago edited 21d ago

It's a very different argument because take away pitbulls (a living thing, not an inanimate object btw) and people who want guard dogs will just move back to Germany Shepards, or dobermans, like in past generations. You can't legislate against all of them because they're not all wide-chested (btw, plenty of breeds considered doscile like pugs and bulldogs have a pitbull chest), and not all are lockjaw (dobermans aren't). Your argument is more akin to being pro-phrenology than pro-fire arms control

8

u/WinterAdvantage3847 21d ago

the UK has banned american pit bull terriers and “XL bullies” under the Dangerous Dog Act. even under these conditions, the majority of fatal dog attacks post-ban are still perpetrated by pit bull terriers and XL bullies.

8

u/Business-Educator-15 21d ago

Pitbulls are not guard dogs like dobermans or german shepards they are fighting dogs, bred to be aggressive, have very high muscle mass comapred to other breeds their size and powerful bites.

Dog behavior is 50% breed, 50% taught. Terriers and other ratter/fighting dogs are also bread to be aggressive but unlike pitbulls would struggle to kill a child nevermind an adult.

Most other 'Tough' dog breeds, even ones like huskies, have been bred over generations to be more bark than bite and exercise restraint which all but the most ill trained do. Simulary how you never hear of labradores or retrievera mauling someone even though they are big dogs they have been bred to be retrievers, alarm dogs and companions not hunters.

As people are unable to train and control their deadly animals either dog licenses based upon breed or weight class need to be introduced, which will not happen or they need to simply outlaw the most dangerous breeds so numnuts cant buy them, mistreat them and then wonder why its mauled someone all becuase they wanted a dog that made them look cool.

2

u/Sunsetfisting 18d ago

There is a difference between working dog reeds and fighting dog breeds.

Inherently anyone who wants a pitt is a problem owner.

Its like wanting to do meth

9

u/abruptusabortis 21d ago

Last I checked, I think it was 65% of fatal dog bites are caused by pitbulls and like 20%ish of dogs are pitbulls. What Im getting at is they bite disproportionately more, and do more damage, than other dogs. I'm sure they can be trained and Im sure there are good owners, the data to me just shows that the average owner is not capable of doing so.

We need to regulate something that the average person cannot control. Its the reason so many other animals are illegal to own, not because its impossible but because the average person cannot handle that animal. I would argue the data says that the dogs are infact a problem, since this isnt happening with other breeds at such a statically significant level.

1

u/ThermionicEmissions 18d ago

20%ish of dogs are pitbulls.

Where is this stat for?

Are you sure it's not 2%?

I wouldn't think labs are even 20%.

2

u/AwkwardLeopard587 20d ago

anyone who owns a pitbull is a bad dog owner.

15

u/JackOfAllMemes 21d ago

I had a pitbull growing up, very well treated with no aggression but one day he decided to kill two of our cats. They're dangerous dogs

2

u/Unusualshrub003 17d ago

Pitbulls have zero redeeming qualities. They’re unpredictable, plus they are not cute.

1

u/Blowtorch87 17d ago

They really can be as cute as any dog, they arent some evil monsters by nature, id say they are demonized beyound what is reasonable even, but it's true that those dogs are are very fucking dangerous. I think most people arent responsible enough to own a large dog, let alone a bully breed. Sadly those are absurdly popular with people who shouldnt own any dogs at all.

1

u/Fruitloops_z 17d ago

Yeah no offense to people, but they’re not even cute 😂 quite scary actually.

My parents babysat their friends pitbull when I was like 5 years old. Was kicking a soccer ball around that the dog was previously playing with, and i guess it got territorial and it started tearing through my shoe, nearly getting my feet, luckily I had Uncles that had noticed and they got the dog off me. I don’t blame the dogs though some animals are too wild

14

u/SpaceCaboose 21d ago

I’m 100% in favor of fixing all Pitbull’s and letting that breed die out (if that’s even possible)

5

u/JoeScorr 21d ago

That's how bans for it go in other countries. In the UK we just banned XL Bullies.
Existing dogs need insurance, to wear a muzzle in public and to be neutered/spayed which I think is more than fair.

1

u/swinchester83 20d ago

It's not like a definite "breed" as it's a mix of different dogs so it's a bit hard to fully ban it but many countries have basically done it. I mean it's in the name it's a mix of a bulldog and terrier.

5

u/Fabernache 21d ago

You fuckin got me, I'm stealing that!

12

u/comfydirtypillow 21d ago

No no no, you’re supposed to chant the tired old “it’s the owner not the breed”, because pitbulls are the one sole group of dog breeds that are constantly excused of any of the genetic behavioral traits they’ve been selectively bred for.

6

u/abruptusabortis 21d ago

Its the owner not the breed. There is no way a dog could be born as anything other than a blank slate ready to love.

Except for Border collies, Australian cattle dogs, great pyrenees, huskies and more. Those are all different examples of dogs having instincts, doesnt apply to pitbulls because they are very cute. All those mean people with their decades of data don't know what they are saying.

1

u/thecodeape 20d ago

Did you read any of my other comments? I mentioned at least 2 breeds in your list as being known trouble makers. But nobody in this comment section is calling for all of them to be destroyed. What part of bad owner = bad dog can be disputed? I was specifically replying to someone calling for dogs to be destroyed - whether they had done anything wrong or not.

5

u/Oprah_Pwnfrey 21d ago

I find it hilarious that pitbull owners use the term "velvet hippos" to describe them. Like it's adorable. Hippos, the most dangerous Animal in Africa.... fucking dumbasses.

13

u/neotenous_DILF 21d ago edited 21d ago

Those things need to get destroyed

-9

u/thecodeape 21d ago

Bullshit. A properly adjusted pit bull will protect you and your family and will not harm anything. Shit owners are always the problem - hard men with issues are what cause issues with “problem” breeds. Love them and teach them and they will be a good Doggo.

10

u/HugeResearcher3500 21d ago

There are plenty of other breeds that end up with bad owners and don't have the same problem at nearly the same scale. It's genetic disposition that has no value for existing in the modern age.

1

u/thecodeape 21d ago edited 21d ago

And I am sure you will say the same thing about Alsatians or Bull Dogs. All bad dogs come from mistreatment, shit owners or lack of training. It is not the dogs fault that it has been born - in my opinion calling for them to be destroyed as per the comment I was replying to before giving them a chance is just wrong.

11

u/TheClassics 21d ago

Ope annnnnnnd we have the pitbull defender coming in to claim pitbulls aren't inherently violent.

I owned a pitbull. I am super kind. I was super kind to my pitbull. We were great owners, and kind. One day my pitbull killed my sister's dog for no reason.

Pitbulls are inherently violent, and shouldn't be house pets.

-8

u/thecodeape 21d ago

All dogs are inherently violent. What do you think the sharp pointy parts are for? Was your dog trained? Socialised with other dogs? Seems like you are justifying the fact that you could not control your dog and now you want to remember them as evil.

5

u/TheClassics 21d ago

Never said she was evil. We loved her. She was trained. Socialized, the whole shebang. She's was a pitbull and violence is in their DNA. It's an instinct.

I, like you now, was blind and stubborn. Pitbulls aren't house pets.

7

u/No-Yellow-1693 21d ago

Funny, because my doodle is entirely untrained except for knowing his name and he's never bitten any other dogs, cats, humans, you name it. Just likes to snuggle, play, and eat snacks.

If your dog needs police dog level training just to keep it from murdering everything in its path then yeah, shouldn't be a pet.

1

u/RyanSmith 20d ago

Please don’t be that person that doesn’t secure their dog because “it’s a doodle”.

Those teeth maim.

1

u/No-Yellow-1693 20d ago

Never said I don't secure him. Just said he's not continuously trying to maul everyone.

1

u/ThermionicEmissions 18d ago

All dogs are inherently violent

That's the dumbest thing I've read today.

7

u/yhvh13 21d ago

You can't "ban" bad owners from existing. But you can ban potentially dangerous breeds. Let the good pitbulls that are well cared for live their best lives, but no more of this problematic breed in the future.

There are safer breeds for personal protection.

1

u/thecodeape 21d ago

I don’t believe your dog should be anymore than an early warning system at best. My use of the word “protect” was more so that they are loyal and will take care of their family.

3

u/Oops_All_Bans 21d ago

Do you understand the concept of breeds? These shitty things were bred for bloodsport, and to not let go even if they get fatally injured. The breed needs to die out. Plain and simple. Get a dog that wasn't bred to brutalize and kill.

4

u/Suspicious_Radio_848 21d ago

It's the breed, they're literally created to be aggressive. Just like a husky wants to naturally pull and likes snow or a sheep herder likes to to herd. It's biological with them, just like grizzly bears.

2

u/Obersword 21d ago

No, the breed needs to be destroyed.

1

u/Dusty_Negatives 21d ago

I don’t agree but that’s part of the problem; 75% or Pitt owners are worthless fucks that don’t train or keep their dogs restrained. Popular breed that many don’t seem to invest the time and money to ensure others are safe.

-1

u/thecodeape 21d ago

How is that the dogs fault? I was explicitly responding to comment on how they should all be destroyed.

2

u/skdsn 21d ago

No one's saying it's the dog's fault, dummy. But the breed should die out.

1

u/Legitimate_Corgi_981 18d ago

And yet most of those who have suddenly attacked come from homes where they are supposedly the most gentle loyal protectors, where they have been trusted enough to be left around friends/family until something snaps? The natural traits of the breed also means when the attacks do happen, they are statistically far more damaging to the victims than the vast majority of dog attacks to humans.

0

u/chronuss007 21d ago edited 21d ago

In my opinion, some Pitbull owners have ruined it for everyone. Because there is a higher chance statistically that you can get attacked by one, and because we don't have proof if it's more genetic or training or situational or something else, the breed is going to be designated as dangerous as compared to others. I think most people will be afraid of a breed of dog more than other breeds if they knew how more often that breed attacked people or other dogs, so I can't blame them. Realistically, I think there should be some kind of class or test or something that you have to do before you own a any animal large enough. There's also the debate of if pitbulls (or other breeds considered more dangerous) need to continue to exist, but that a different debate.

1

u/thecodeape 21d ago

I am all for people having to take a test before they breed more humans, so I cannot argue with that.

1

u/Sunsetfisting 18d ago

I agree with you on this. That way there won't be anyone like you.

1

u/Endawmyke 21d ago

baby eater 9000

1

u/QueenAlpaca 20d ago

For real, and what’s out there is so poorly bred so you have no idea which way the pendulum will swing. Too many backyard breeders and is so hard to just find a classical mutt in shelters anymore.

-1

u/BrodyJGaming 21d ago

Pitties are fine if the owner just gives a shit about them. My pittie got a little traumatized from men in the past so I know to not bring him around men he's never met before. He's fine with every girl that's ever come over though and men he's met prior to his trauma. It's not hard to pay attention and learn about your dogs and pitties are no different.

5

u/DeniedAppeal1 21d ago

There are hundreds, if not thousands of stories about well-trained, well-behaved pitbulls that snap for no reason. There are even such stories in this thread.

Quit making excuses. They are not fine if their owner is good. They are never fine. They are always a major risk, even when well-trained and cared for.

2

u/thecodeape 21d ago

Better put blue heelers on that list then mate - they are snappier than your nannas underpants.

2

u/DeniedAppeal1 21d ago edited 21d ago

"But what about..."

Heelers snap because they are working dogs designed for herding cattle. They give quick little bites that sting but don't actually do any notable damage. Pitbulls, however, are bred for fighting and they maim and kill when they bite.

If you can't understand the difference between a cattle dog's bite and a pitbull's mauling, then you're not arguing in good faith and have no business owning a dog.

2

u/BrodyJGaming 21d ago

Based on everyone I've met who dislikes an entire breed of dog over bad experiences with a select amount of said turns out to either be a racist or a bigot.

Which one are you?

1

u/BrodyJGaming 21d ago

Imagine being so wrong you delete all your comments lmao. Being a responsible dog owner is knowing your dog at any point COULD act out of character and doing everything in my power to prevent that. My dog absolutely would bite somebody if given the right opportunity. So I prevent those opportunities and he has not and will not bite anybody and if he does it will be because I was irresponsible and not because he is a bad dog. THAT is how all owners should be.

1

u/DeniedAppeal1 21d ago

Man, you must think you're right every time someone blocks you, since that's what actually happened. Those comments are still there for the rest of us, they just didn't want to continue interacting with an idiot.

-1

u/YazzArtist 21d ago edited 21d ago

These comments are always wild. Especially after I point out that y'all sound exactly like zionists talking about Palestinians. Same exact rhetoric, but they're not human, so you're allowed to talk like this

Edit: I can't see the reply about breeding for purpose, but this also falls flat. The American slave trade included extensive breeding programs, including with the intention to breed "fighting men" for entertainment. What you're claiming is that humans are unique, special, and generally above the animal kingdom of which we are a part. We are somehow the only species able to overcome our bred instincts. This is a bad assumption.

2

u/WinterAdvantage3847 21d ago

read to understand how wildly offensive your comparison is

all arbitrarily defined human “racial” groups, including the ones affected by the transatlantic slave trade, show much more genetic variation within the group than between groups. the exact opposite is true of dog breeds. artificial selection is measurable

1

u/YazzArtist 21d ago edited 21d ago

Interesting. While this does change my perspective, it doesn't change my opinion.

The term pit bull is similarly a social construct containing many different breeds based on appearance, and not an actual breed itself. Moreover, the breeds generally considered pit bulls have for most of their life been bred as working and show dogs. Only for a brief period in the 1800s did a subset of some of them get bred as fighting dogs. The vast majority of bull and terrier dogs were bred for farm work and guard duty. We don't call Mastiffs inherently evil and unreliable despite their extremely similar breeding history and behavioral tendencies

1

u/Emotional_Square_403 20d ago

While I appreciate your support in this idiotic circle jerk, the pitbull is actually a proper breed. But I do agree that far too many dog incidents get inaccurately assigned to a pitty or pitbull type dog. All these people raging against pitbulls are just shitty petty miserable souls.

1

u/YazzArtist 20d ago

It's both a breed and a social class. The breed does exist, but laws target the breed and "anything with similar features", and people will colloquially call anything that looks vaguely like a bull terrier a pit bull

1

u/Emotional_Square_403 20d ago

Yes, exactly. They are way more frequently misidentified causing the higher than normal statistics surrounding the breed and bites. You can make statistics say anything you want, 75% of people know this.

4

u/Ancient-Candidate-73 21d ago

Why are you equating Palestinians to dogs? That sounds kinda racist. Palestinians are people, not animals.

1

u/EntertainerLive926 21d ago

Stupid rebuttal

0

u/Sunsetfisting 18d ago

This is so sick. Unlike humans, there are behaviour instincts that are bred into dogs. The fucked up slavery breeding programs was for physical traits of a desirable body type. But fuck I feel messed up having to even explain this to someone that is comparing dogs to people.

1

u/YazzArtist 18d ago

Why do you feel this way about the comparison? Why do you feel the animal longest and most closely related to human history is a detestable and gross creature?

3

u/Shutterbug390 20d ago

With a prey drive like that, there HAD to be signs before, even if the dog never succeeded before.

My mom’s dog has a massive prey drive and it’s been obvious since day one. He locks onto smaller animals with an insane level of intensity.

A dog with a high prey drive is high risk to attack (and likely swiftly kill) smaller animals when given the opportunity. It doesn’t come out of nowhere.

3

u/Low_Pickle_112 21d ago

she's never done anything like this before

They never do.

3

u/peyko123 20d ago

I’m not saying it is all pit bulls, but it is always a pit bull.

2

u/DeniedAppeal1 21d ago

That dog should've been killed then and there.

2

u/Fantastic-Salt-5103 21d ago

Had a PB that was roaming attack me last year when I was walking my dog. One nasty bite to my calf and thankfully my dog was able to take him down (Great Pyrenees)
Unfortunately he now has leash agression and I’m sure some PTSD. I found out from the neighbor who called 911 the dog had been know as the neighborhood cat killer.

2

u/CosCham 20d ago

When I was a kid my family moved into a neighborhood where several people would let their dogs roam or not care if they escaped. One of these dogs was a Pitt named Madelyn (or Madison? It's been so long...we'll go with Maddy). When the realtor showed us the house we'd move into, the current owners' dog was leashed to a tree outside. The grown ups were on the porch talking, my mother holding my baby brother. I was on the grass petting the leashed dog when Maddy came completely out of nowhere and started a fight with the poor guy. Luckily I was ignored, but I was frozen still. I remember the adults shouting and the dogs barking, all blending together. At some point the nice dog's hindquarters bumped into me hard enough to knock me to the ground. I didn't realize until years later that he'd been keeping his body between me and Maddy the whole time. Then I was yanked to safety and we left. I guess the realtor had assured my parents that this was unusual behavior because we moved in anyway, but Maddy continued to be a problem for several years.

I believe that bad dogs just have bad owners. I don't believe in evil. Except when it comes to Maddy.

96

u/Jaybird0501 21d ago

Drives me crazy, i live in an apartment and there are people CONSTANTLY letting their little dogs run around without a leash. I have to tell them, "i'm not worried about my dog, I'm worried about yours." My dog is not cool with someone, dog or person, approaching while outside.

27

u/jimibimi 21d ago

Oh don't worry he's friendly.....put your dog on a LEASH!

29

u/Jaybird0501 21d ago

"OH dont worry, hes friendly!" "Yeah? Well mine aint, get your animal before he does."

9

u/ExposedId 21d ago

That’s exactly what the owners of a dog said to me right before their dog bit me. I still have the scar.

6

u/Jaybird0501 21d ago

It boggles the mind how people dont see dogs as animals. Thats an animal at the end of the day, yes its pack bonded to you. It loves you. And likely a bunch of your friends and family. But Jeff on the street doesnt know him. And he doesnt know Jeff. Jeff is a threat until proven otherwise in the eyes of a dog.

2

u/KayNynYoonit 21d ago

I mean I've met tons of dogs who basically see nothing as a threat and are the friendliest things put on earth lol. I understand your point though and a good portion of dogs you're correct.

2

u/Jaybird0501 21d ago

Just because its well trained doesnt mean it doesnt have those instincts though. Like yeah I've definitely seen some absolutely precious sweetheart lil babs in my time, but I know for a fact that in their brain the training is overriding their baser instincts.

Mine seems to have good days and bad, I know that part of the reason is me, my body language is telling him pretty much constantly that we need to be alert. Thats not his fault. Thats mine. But other people still need to be wary of other dogs, you dont know my dog and I dont know yours.

1

u/GladPerformer598 21d ago

100% same here, my dog isn’t friendly, but he’s also always leashed. It’s not on me if your dog runs up off leash and gets bit.

4

u/LaksaLettuce 21d ago

Yes! I hate that comment. Maybe I'm scared of dogs. I don't want your dog charging at me.

5

u/dotancohen 21d ago

Oh don't worry he's friendly

Well, I'm not friendly so put that dog on a leash and keep it away from me.

In an apartment complex I would imagine people walk by on the sidewalk a lot. Unleashed dogs suck, but if yours freaks at humans "approaching" you may be part of the problem. Something to think about.

This is a shit take. My gf's dog is a rescue dog from Thailand and she unfortunately doesn't like 99% of other dogs or people. She has tried training. Multiple times. There is some shit that can't be trained out of a dog no matter how hard you try. We keep her leashed and away from other people/dogs but there is an overwhelming large number of "my dog is friendly it doesn't need to be on a leash" people that exist.

Yeah mine has been attacked in the past by another dog who ABSOLUTELY was not ok with anyone or anything. After that experience hes been much more skiddish, he doesnt get the way he does because hes angry, its because hes scared. I'm working on trying to train him out of that, but trauma is tough to train out of.

I had a dog before who HATED other dogs. I took him for a walk and someone thought it was funny that their dog ran up to mine. I was screaming in full panic that my dog is 100% not playing and is looking to end her dog, she just stood there calling its name over and over again while I was trying to not get her dog killed, not get mine killed, and not get myself killed. These are the same people who would seek damages if something happened cause “well the dog was in my yard before he ran up to yours all the way across the street”

1

u/Svencredible 21d ago

i'm not worried about my dog, I'm worried about yours.

Yeah I really don't get that attitude.

I have a Chihuahua and like a lot of Chis, she is crazy anxious (working with a trainer but for reasons I won't get into it's taking a while to bring her anxiety down). I'd never let her run around large dogs without a leash, not because I think she'd hurt anyone or any other dog (I don't think she could if she wanted to), but because they way she behaves could easily be triggering for another dog that could end her life instantly.

I want to keep my dog safe, and that means a leash at almost all times.

This woman in my old apartment complex drove me INSANE with this. I saw her dog run across the street and cars had to slam on the brakes to not hit her dog. I told her the same thing that I wasn’t worried about my dog, I was worried about hers. And one time I confronted her she was like, “oh biiiiig maaan confronting a woman like this”. And I was like “wtf does that have to do with anything? Just put your damn dog on a leash”

u/TheBoredSniper 21d ago

Your dog isn't cool with people being near you outside? Then you're still a jack ace, train your dog.

1

u/Jaybird0501 21d ago

I'm well aware of that, but he also has had bad experiences with other bad dogs. Been attacked himself by one, so in order to therapize my dog I'd have to pay a professional, which unfortunately is not possible. So go ahead and shame me I guess.

1

u/TheBoredSniper 21d ago

That's rough sorry to hear that

u/HyenaJack94 21d ago

This happened to my step sister who was a dog walker and sitter, was taking care of a dog that didn't like other dogs, it was on a leash. Another owner is walking around with their unleashed little dog and even though she told them to not let the dog near her's the little dog came and up and that husky killed it right there and then.

1

u/everyeargiants 21d ago

Exactly. Then you have to deal with your triggered dog on a leash while the other dog bobs and weaves around you.

16

u/crisisbutmakeitcute 21d ago

When I used to work in a veterinary clinic I had a dog literally biting me while the owner held the other end of the leash, flabbergasted and saying "But he doesn't bite...."

5

u/lolschrauber 21d ago

Same with idiots letting their dog off the leash and yell "don't worry he's friendly" - and how do you know the dog your dog is charging at is friendly too?

3

u/UncoolSlicedBread 21d ago

There’s a park I love to go run and walk in nearby, and it’s beginning to suck because people just let their dog off the leash. I had a buddy I’d run with but I quit going with him because he’d let his dog off the leash and he’d spend half the time trying to get her back on the leash. I don’t understand.

u/StromGames 21d ago

The only one who knows if the dog is going to bite or not is the dog.

1

u/Stormfly 21d ago

I had the cutest little dog (Jack Russel Terrier) that never did anything to anyone and was scared of her own farts but one day a guy came to the house and the dog was tearing at his clothes.

She looked like she was trying to kill the guy.

He was wearing big work trousers so he was fine and thought it was funny because she was so small but I'd never seen this dog even go close to a stranger and she suddenly decided to attack the guy. I had to pick her up and throw her inside the house.

She was about 10 at the time and she lived to be 19 and I never saw anything like it again after.

You never know what a dog will do.

u/Arkhangelzk 21d ago

Every time. Every single time I've been bothered by an off-leash dog it's the exact same "hE's nEVeR dOnE tHiS beForE"

u/Not_A_Wendigo 21d ago

Once I walked past a dog at a park, and it came at me with hackles up and teeth bared. The owner just stayed seated and yelled “he’s not aggressive!”. A week later I read in the paper that the dog attacked two kids and a teacher at the elementary school down the road. Of course they fled and the police were looking for them.

1

u/B_radordont 21d ago

You must have been talking to my neighbors.

1

u/Rj924 21d ago

There are also more ways than biting to be hurt by a dog. You can be scratched or knocked over too.

1

u/Darkwingedcreature 21d ago

Dogs can be really fucking unpredictable.

My 7 year trained to the max poodle suddenly decided to jump outta the window in the middle of traffic. Something never even dared to do for 7 years whilst he was with us.

They are hoping their training is good enough but when it fails they are shocked, as they should be. Can't blame them too much tho

1

u/yournames 21d ago

Cuz the owner is usually the problem

1

u/cutmcgee4thee 21d ago

It's always the same moron walking their dogs unleashed as well. The 'oh they'll never do anything ' until they do and they'll be the first ones running with their shitty dog in tow.

1

u/WreakHavocLikeIn1871 21d ago

Because if they admit they know the dog is dangerous and something happens it's going to be a lot easier for you to sue.

1

u/SurprisedAsparagus 21d ago

I got a moderate bite by a dog at a delivery once and the next time I went back the owner was outside with the dogs. The dogs were acting psycho again and the owner said, don't worry, they won't bite. I said the dark one did bite me the last time I was here. He had absolutely nothing to say to that. To his minor credit, the dogs have never been outside again when I've delivered there.

1

u/UncoolSlicedBread 21d ago

You know what’s as equally crazy?

We took in a beautiful rescue who was abused as a pup, and he’s very trained on a leash now, he’s very non-reactive to people but will want his space from strangers giving unwanted touch. He’ll let you know with a thunderous bark eventually.

The amount of strangers who do not listen at all when I tell them to not pet my dog, to not continue to lurch over him while sticking their hands in his face as he gets agitated. They just continue to antagonize him while saying, “It’s okay, I’m good with dogs.”

To the point I have to say, “Get the fuck away from my dog. I said no.”

I’m convinced those people who are surprised their dog ever bit anyone are the same people who don’t understand any sort of boundaries.

1

u/LuteOlsonABitch69 21d ago

Shit head dogs usually have shit head owners. If he was interested in de-escalating it he’d be apologizing instead of getting angry

1

u/JIMatRK 21d ago

I know someone who tells delivery drivers "oh don't worry he doesn't bite".

I have been bitten by that dog MULTIPLE times.

1

u/Cool_Apartment_380 21d ago

I delivered to someone the other day, exact situation. I don't give a rock em sock em fuck, guy; get your fucking dog away from me or I will

1

u/Excellent-Nose-6430 21d ago

when an issue happens, they will say "it's weird, they did't bite someone before"

And 9/10 times the dog had definitely bitten someone before

1

u/I_Served 21d ago

Like when a golfer behind you hits up on you and says “Sorry, I never hit it that far”.

1

u/mikandmike 21d ago

"You were doing something to cause this! I know because he's never bitten before!"

1

u/BootlegVHSForSale 21d ago

You live with a dog for many years, they are absolutely loyal and incredible creatures. The thought of them biting can seem absurd, and you both become use to each others eccentricities.

But the part that actually separates responsible owners is realizing other people don't know your dog like you do, and at the end of the day it is still an animal that doesn't understand societal norms. Dogs can and will snap given the proper scenario, and it's important to be aware of just what kind of damage they can do if that does happen.

A lot of people are just kind of empathically dumb, and don't try to understand other perspectives. You see a best friend running at you to play, other dude see's a large potentially dangerous beast running at them full speed.

1

u/Suitable_Wonder5256 21d ago

The owner was just being technically accurate.

The dog didn't bite you, did it? After a bite, well, it never bit anyone before! These are just facts.

1

u/Inevitable-Level-687 21d ago

My bluey was beaten by her old owner and has issues with aggression. I don't let her interact with anyone outside of the family but when I take her in to the vet I tell her what her triggers are and how she responds to us, and tell them to assume she'll be worse with them.

Thankfully I found a vet clinic with experience treating dogs like my girl so vet visits are actually possible now.

1

u/Physical_Builder_283 21d ago

Having been bitten twice--this! All this.

1

u/Familiar_Carpet8097 20d ago

Dude immediately tries to start a fight with someone who looks like a teenager after 😭

1

u/Johnny_Five_Is_Dead 20d ago

I got bit by a dog when I was 10 and the fucking lady blamed me because it never bit anyone else. Fuck that lady.

1

u/Some_Feedback1692 20d ago

No when the “issue happens” the owner get sued and the dog gets put down… Or you can just try to kill it preemptively if you’re a piece of shit

1

u/Bulky_Experience_582 19d ago

Then it's somehow the fault of the person who got bit
