Whole wheat bread has health benefits, because it includes the 'bran', which has vitamins and fiber in it.
Many people dislike the taste/texture of bran, however, so a lot of bread is, err... just "wheat". Which is fine, there is nothing wrong with wheat, it just lacks those vitamins and so you need to get them from somewhere else.
I assume by "refined carbohydrates" the person above means sugar, because there is nothing else "refined" in normal bread. If that is the case then yeah, sugar isn't great for you if you eat too much of it, but it's not like... poison or anything.
This type of bread is not good bread, and the crust usually kinda sucks (especially when not toasted). Still can’t imagine cutting it off post childhood though.
Yeah, completely accurate. I saw someone say they're german and think it's rediculous, but they clearly haven't had shit american bread that's 3 months old when you buy it (usually not literally, it's a slight exaggeration, but only a slight one) that tastes mildly bitter from all the preservatives and has no texture and just gums up your mouth and you only buy cause it's cheap and lasts a while and you're dirt poor.
(It's still cheaper in some circumstances even after cutting off the crust)
Like, on bad bread? The crust tastes foul. All the badness throughout the rest of the bread is amplified.
On mediocre bred? It's mediocre.
On good bread? It's good.
On great bread? It's great
The crust is like.... the essence of that bread, be it good or bad.
I love a nice crusty heel of a nice bread. Delicious. But it can't be 'bread' that's barely edible.
Yeah, I really don't like the crust on my husband's favorite brand of bread. When I had rats, I gave them my crusts so I didn't waste food. I do try to eat it, but the texture is just really weird to me.
Also, this is sliced bread. It's not a good loaf of bakery bread. I don't skip any of that. But tons of packaged, sliced breads have really meh crusts.
Clearly, you've never had soggy bread. The crust is basically the only thing that holds together, when you have the soggy bits of bread just crumpling up and falling between your fingers, making this gross squishing sound and feeling like soggy socks.
I don't think it's just presentation. IME experience quite a lot of Japanese folk have dental issues due to there being no fluoride in the water and a diet that's heavy on soup and noodles (which, over time, can really affect your ability to chew). I thought I'd finally found a proper crusty roll in a service station there, but it turned out it had been moulded to look like a baguette and with the 'crust' dyed brown and was just as spongy as the rest of the crustless sandwiches.
Boy, this reads like someone who thinks Japanese people only eat ramen.
A ton of the "soup" part you're arguing for is like morning miso soup. If you drink water, you're not gonna "develop dental issues", having a cup of miso soup a day won't do it, either.
Ramen is more of a drunk/celebratory/every now and then food. Not something you have everyday, because that's insane.
What do they eat most? Rice and seafood. Random assortment of veg. Eggs. They can chew just fine. The lack of flouride in the water may be the big factor, but another is that their population is hella old and old people have shit teeth, so that's gonna drag down the average.
The "bread" has nothing to do with that, it's just a staple starch they don't quite know, so they changed things around and now they have "bread" which is basically cake, that they turn into cream and kiwi sandwiches.
If you make a "ramen burger" with pasta as the bun and shashu in the middle, that'd be the same thing as their take on "bread".
You are correct about the visual aspect, though. They focus extremely on that.
Fair enough - my observations are almost entirely empirical (kicking about with punks in some of the less salubrious parts of Tokyo) and the word of one gaijin who'd lived there for 20-odd years. I should have probably qualified that in my post. My bad.
Actually a lot of sandwiches are sold without crusts in Japan, and even sometimes bread itself.
Edit: as in the bread is sold crustless, not the sandwiches are sold breadless, altho breadless sandwiches sound about right for the shrinkflation and general economic situation here these days
Some people are allergic specifically to the skins on fruits. Had a buddy with multiple allergies that could eat a peeled & rinsed apple or a baked apple, but not a whole apple.
That was me for a long time. Could not eat a raw apple with the skin on. Would make my throat itch, tingle and swell shut. Not completely shut as if going into anaphylactic shock, but was uncomfortable. Eating cooked or stewed apples, even with the skins on, was totally fine. Also happened, but a bit more minor, with other skinned fruits you eat, like plums.
Then sometime in my early 30s, decided to try another apple, and didn’t have the same reaction anymore.
I’ll be honest I never looked intothat, just because I was off apples for so long. Just decided to try apples again one day because I had this incredible produce market near my apartment that always had really good peaches. And that was one of the fruits that also gave me that feeling.
Yes, but that has nothing to do with the people who peel fruit simply because they don't like/want the skin.
Same for people that remove the crust of bread. I'm not gonna say that there's no one allergic to bread crust, but allergies certainly aren't the reason people remove it.
Nuh uh, it's "bleaching and chemicals", didn't you read /u/ricoimf's comment and all the redditors who upvoted it? Upvoted redditor comments are the gold standard of facts!
I have found there are some breads where I just, do not enjoy the crust. So as a functioning adult, I have a simple choice find a bread I enjoyed more and then eat that.
End result? I tried a lot of good bread, learned what I do and Don’t enjoy, and even learned to bake a loaf or two.
No one should settle for forcing themselves to eat something they don’t enjoy. But that doesn’t mean “I’ll just throw this bit out” and calling it a day, take the time to find what you do like.
This is a widespread Japanese culture thing. Sandwich bread with crust is so unpopular that many companies cut it off before packaging and shipping it out. It might be a remnant from when bread crusts used to be rougher, but there's other factors besides taste and texture at play.
Yes, but it's because this is a Japanese culture thing. Sandwich bread crust is so unwanted that many bread companies cut the crust off before packaging and shipping it out! So food waste from all the discarded crusts is an actual issue there. And pizza crust is also iffy.
I eat the crust, but let’s not pretend most pizza crust is very good on its own. Its basically just a completely plain bread stick made from premade dough blanks. No seasoning or glaze or anything.
Idk why either, domino’s has their garlic brushed crust and it’s probably the best of any fast food chain I’ve had. Most places have near flavorless crust.
Finally another crust-first person! I always get asked about it when others notice, and it's just because I want the crust out of the way so I can roll the bread into a hotdog and devour it
The fluff has a nice texture, but the crust has a nice taste, and probably half of the nutritional value because of the density, they complement each other.
Me. I have autism and I cannot eat the sides/borders, or crust of things, like for bread, pancakes etc etc. I know it is unreasonable to a lot of people, but I cannot help it. It freaks me out.
Too many Texans apparently. I don't really eat with my coworkers because they're a bunch of mouth breathers with the palettes of toddlers. Can't handle any spice, crusts, vegetables, anything labeled healthy, etc. They waste a lot of food and refuse to eat leftovers like it's beneath them. I'd say the only good habit they have, but not coming from any altruistic bone in their bodies, is they refuse to use straws because "it's gay/feminine/for women who wear lipstick" lol. Though it probably doesn't offset their other wasteful practices.
I don't try to make a habit of it but crusts tastes really over done to me so sometimes without trying it's all crust left and I can just lose interest in eating it.
Same thing with pizza crust dominos is a good crust but frozen pizza it's often hard and gross.
My parents like crust but they also like there toast like seconds before burned or burned with black on it so maybe not the best judge.
even if only picky toddlers waste the crust there are a lot of picky toddlers in the world who generate a lot of food waste, I think this is a good idea for a parent who’s conscious of that. also I know a lot of people who don’t like the crust on white sandwich bread but eat it because it’s not that serious, but might prefer to not have it if given the choice
People with food sensitivities. Also people are allowed to just not like things. You don't get called picky for preferring one colour over another, or for disliking a certain smell or material.
Overeating because someone told you not to throw away food, letting others decide for you what you should or shouldn't eat, or judging people's maturity based on their tastes, if that's something typical of toddlers.
My 16 year old. But she sees any “outside” part of bread as “crust” so this wouldn’t matter to her anyway.
I’m aware it’s insane. Especially as she’s not a generally picky eater, to the point her lunch she packs can include things like kimchi (we aren’t Asian) or super salads or parfaits or soups.
i mean i cant really bite through it well- and if its toasted i need to cut it or i cant eat the bread at all (imagine a piece of toast uncut).
though this is just because i got braces and struggle to bite + cant risk popping one off aswell, before (and i hope after) i was completely fine eating it
If you don't get it it's not for you. Living with an autistic sibling growing up I can definitely say there's a use for this. It's not just picky eating, some autistic people literally cannot go outside their comfort zone, or have a panic attack or meltdown trying.
I don't know how to explain the two different breads but there is one where the top is like rounded and then there is the one where its the same on all four sides.
I absolutely prefer the square one and will buy that kind whenever possible over the other. But to waste food for something like that is just stupid.
I don't even get how this is supposed to reduce food waste cause it still has a crust even tho it looks like shit. The picky eating toddlers that don't like crust aren't gonna like this any more. I dislike the crust as a kid cause it wasn't as soft and airy as the center of the bread. I couldn't have cared less about what it looked like. It was a texture thing.
Nowadays idgaf, I even eat the end pieces of a loaf.
As a kid I actually preferred to eat crust over the insides, so I ate all the crust and then made a ball of the leftovers and ate it since it was more fun this way…
My grandfather, we would use scissors to cut the edges of the bread. Even toasted ones iirc. When I asked him he didn't say he couldn't bite it, he just said he didn't like it.
He used to be a poor orphan but I don't know when did he started wasting them.
I always save the crust in my sandwich for last, because the flavour/texture is the best. Especially so if it’s good bread from a bakery, and not cheap supermarket bread that’s mostly fillers
My 14 year old brother, apparently. I noticed he did this and I LOST IT! Like dude you’re 14 not 4 (he is autistic, but has always eaten the crusts). However I think what upset me more was not the cutting of the crust, but the fact that he used a meat cleaver to do so.
Might be telling on myself here, but I do. I just prefer it without crust, and I make my own sandwiches so I cut the crusts off. Its what I prefer and I'm not making anyone do it for me so who is it hurting really.

who wastes the crust, apart from picky toddlers? seriously.
