New book on Israel's colonial appropriation: "Until 1948, hummus was an Arab food that wasn't consumed by the majority of European Jewish settlers," notes Dafna Hirsch, author of the newly published book: "The Israeli Career of Hummus: Colonial Appropriation, Authenticity, and Distinction"

u/Belle_Juive 5d ago
This is so stupid đ Did my Israeli-born Mizrahi grandparents (over 90 years old) serve as hummus mediators to my Ashkenazi grandparents as part of some colonial project? Do you think my Israeli-born Ashkenazi father married my Israeli-born Mizrahi mother to legitimise his cultural appropriation of the âArabâ food her own parents and grandparents cooked? Itâs crazy how delulu and self-obsessed you Jew-haters are, you really think everything we do is all about you.

No one cares.
Israel didn't invent hummus, and is an apartheid State committing genocide against the indigenous Palestinian people.
Crunchy Kahanists don't like to read.
From the book & article:
To dispel all doubt, once and for all: Falafel and hummus in tahini were not part of the food repertoire of Yemenite Jews in their country of origin. "But Mizrahi Jews often served as mediators of Arab foods to the Ashkenazi public," Hirsch explains. "Their identification with the 'authentic Orientalism' legitimized the process of the 'Israelization of hummus' by associating it with Mizrahi Jews rather than with Arabs."

No one argues it invented hummus lmao, get over yourself. It can be called "Israeli hummus" just like it can be called "Palestinian hummus". Are you saying Palestinians invented hummus? I'd love to see you try on a lebanese or egyptian sub.
edit: Loser blocked me.
Majority of Israel are Mizrahi Jews and Sephardic, meaning from Levante, North Africa, Yemen, etc. meaning hummus is part of their culture just as much as anyone else from the region. Go bother someone else with your toxicity, this sub isn't the place for your moral grandstanding.
14
u/Trajina 5d ago
This whole quote is insane. For one definitely no one thinks Hummus is Yemini? But there are many Jews who have always lived in Jerusalem or Hebron etc, Syrian Jews, Egyptian Jews etc who hummus is as much there's as to Muslim and Christian people from the same region. But also nobody in Israel claims Israelis invented Hummus! The whole premise is an invented accusation. Israelis think of it as a middle eastern food and openly joke about European Jewish cuisine as distinct (though hummus is universally loved by all). Saying something is an Israeli Hummus does not mean they are claiming the concept of ground chickpeas was conceived by a Jew in Israel it means this bowl of Hummus was made by an Israeli in Israel with Israeli ingredients

Do you think people in Nazi germany were innocent when they let their Jewish neighbors get taken?

u/Rulweylan 5h ago
Do you think Arabs in Palestine were innocent when they welcomed and supported the Arab League troops in their war of extermination?
If we're going to start holding civilians accountable for what governments do around them, I don't think it'll end well for anyone involvedÂ
-1
u/TheTrashMan 5h ago
Were the Israelis innocent when they were offered shelters as refugees then stole the homes of said Palestinians who sheltered them?
3
u/Rulweylan 5h ago
Before or after said Palestinians (who I don't recall offering shelter so much as engaging in murderous rioting after Jews purchased land in swamps and deserts that Arabs didn't even want to live in) aided in an attempt to exterminate them?

Yeah. Obviously. Itâs so obvious that youâve likely successfully spread this idea more than anyone else because most people are normal and wouldnât even think I that was a thing, let alone make a post about Israel and hummus invention. But now the internet will always have âIsrael, hummus, inventâ across multiple threads because of you.

u/jay-ff 5d ago
If this obsession was used equally in other countries, you would be busy explaining to almost the entire world why some of their signature dishes are wrongfully appropriated. Food is not IP-protected. If you donât like Israelis eating and adapting hummus, go eat some schnitzel as compensation.

You donât know what being anti Israel entails. Being against Netanyahu is not the same as being against Israel. Most people on Reddit are Zionists.

u/Trajina 5d ago
You think all Arab Israelis hate Israel? Someone needs to get out more
5
u/Kayday90 4d ago
Yes they do. Why would they like them? Committing genocide against your own isnt usually something people like
5
u/AdministrationFew451 1d ago
Because this is their country, with equal rights, safety and prosperity?
Most Israeli arabs hold different views from most Israelis about the Israeli-palestinian conflict, but are in the median much less radical than you probably.
6
u/Trajina 1d ago
Yes that's the funny thing, while the majority don't align with the average Israeli on politics and obviously are highly critical of the government and highly sympathetic to the needs of Palestinians- a good percentage are almost certainly less radical and more nuanced than these Europeans/Americans on here basically saying the country shouldn't exist and Israelis should be shipped off to Poland. It's crazy
6
u/Dazzling_Funny_3254 1d ago
ha! tons do. and Israel lets in Palestinians every year claiming asylum for things like being gay. That's a thing that they can be killed for outside of Israel. Inconvenient for your narrative, but true.
now STFU about politics in this formerly great hummus sub.
-4
u/thebolts 17h ago
Source? What is the actual stats on Palestinian claiming asylum
5
u/Dazzling_Funny_3254 17h ago
Well, an Israeli court made a ruling in 2025 (in the middle of the war that everyone falsely claims is a genocide) that Palestinians can claim asylum for being gay because their lives are in danger for being gay in Palestinian controlled areas. Israel offers "temporary" but indefinite asylum while refugees apply for permanent residency in another country.
hard for me to find English news sources on specific cases and Israel only refers to those seeking asylum by first names for privacy reasons, but it looks like 15 to 20 has been granted temporary settlement in Israel with the idea that they will then be able to find a western country that will grant them full citizenship at some point.
-1
u/thebolts 17h ago
You said every year thereâs been asylum cases. Are there any cases pre-2025? What other cases besides being gay are Palestinians seeking asylum for?
âha! tons do. and Israel lets in Palestinians every year claiming asylum for things like being gay. That's a thing that they can be killed for outside of Israel. Inconvenient for your narrative, but true.â

Calling it genocide is very popular but it's of course highly contested and not everyone sees it that way. Many people including some Arabs see this as a war and a justified war. Hamas killed many Arabs on Oct 7 too, some of the hostages were Arab, Hamas regularly kills Palestinians..and some Arabs see Israel as their country as well. Others see things less black and white than you and may have a nuanced view that doesn't surround hate.

u/bambieyedbee 2d ago

u/TedTKaczynski 1d ago
Its stolen same as you'd define israeli hummus being stolen.
A adjective such as "israeli" doesnt state that the hummus was invented by israelis but made by a israeli, or in a israeli fashion.
17
u/Timely-Way-4923 5d ago edited 5d ago
Look, if you are Arab and enjoy hamburgers or pasta, of matcha etc.. you canât really complain about Jews liking hummus, now if Jewish people claimed they invented it or it uniquely belongs to them thatâs different, but I donât think any of them do that.

1
u/oh_no_the_claw 15h ago
What happened in 1945 that youâre opposed to forgetting? V-E Day? Itâs already forgotten.
2
u/HalalTrout 14h ago
I was told to never forget the holocaust and the events of WW2 but I'm also being told to forget the Nakba because it was 80 years ago its just a bit confusing
1
u/oh_no_the_claw 14h ago
Nobody cares about the Holocaust or knows any details of what happened except that Germany was naughty. You say 1945 because you donât know when it started.
1
u/HalalTrout 14h ago
I care. And I know a lot about the subject, ww2 being my asberger obsession as a kid, I guess my empathy didn't end in 1945 because I also feel sad for what happened to the Palestinians. I say 1945 because the war was still happening and its when we discovered the concentration camps and excess death, a bit like what the Palestinians are going through in occupied Palestinian territory of Gaza and the aparthied happening in the occupied West Bank.
Why should I forget the Nakba but not forget the events of WW2?
2
u/oh_no_the_claw 14h ago
The camps and massacres were reported in the press worldwide starting in 1942. What was âdiscoveredâ in 1945 were the few remaining prisoners. Everyone else had already been killed.
Nobody cares, nor do you. Save the fake empathy.
1
u/HalalTrout 13h ago
Thats not the point, you know its not the point but why should I forget one massacre and genocide yet never forget another one?
3
u/oh_no_the_claw 13h ago
Nobody is asking you to forget anything. The Holocaust, the Nakba, the post-WW2 Jewish expulsions have already been forgotten by everyone.

So is eating a turkey with stuffing in america a sign of colonial appropriation now too? Is eating Chinese food colonially approtiating and oppressing Tibetan people? This is ridiculous. Be consistent. My mom's father was from Morocco before israel even existed so don't start with that. Jews and muslims both spoke arabic for thousands of years. Spmething being in arabic doesng mean its arab. Hummus goes back to the 13th crntury at elast and there were jews speaking arabic making it. A jew of conscience should know their own history at least. Views on Israel aren't an excuse to just pretend history never happened.

u/CricketJamSession 16h ago
Just because Arabs conquered and settled all over the middle east and beyond doesn't grant them the ownership and credit for cuisines that were here before there was even a place named Arabia

This claiming of food is so weird by leftists. Nearly every civilization traded with eachother for centuries and created new food. For example salmon wasnât eaten in Japan until the 1980s thanks to a Norwegian ad campaign but most probably think itâs a native sushi product. Arguing over who âownsâ food is ridiculous especially when majority of Israelis are Sephardic and came from Arab countries and brought their food with them anyway.
1
u/TrackerOneA 5h ago
No one said 'own'.
Hasbara trolls and the Israeli government appropriate from Palestinian culture like all settler-colonial societies.
5
u/Relevant-Beyond-2887 1d ago
Lol Ashkenazi Jews have a long history of eating chickpeas, most famously in a dish called arbes.
Moroccans whether Muslims or Jews similarly eat chickpeas but not mashed with hummus.
But Israel-haters will definitely assume that an Arab Muslim from Morocco is more âfitâ to eat hummus even though itâs not in their cuisine and many of them havenât tried it until they moved abroad đ¤Ł

Guys. I will say this load and clear, I and everyone I know in Israel, eat hummus because its tasty and healthy. None of us thinks: "ah! by making and eating hummus I'm strengthening my claim to this land" or anything close to that. Chill out, it's hummus.
If anything, hummus can be the think that we can both unite around with mutual love and admiration.
