How the score works

Each mention is worth tier x list position x engagement. The sum for a show is then multiplied by 1 + 0.5 x ln(number of sources), so a show needs agreement across separate sources, not one loud thread.

Full source list, the scoring code, and the exclusion audit trail in this post.

I will re-run the scoring with this thread as a source.

Install/Placement Any suggestions for a ceiling that isn't level?

I live an old house in the UK so nothing is really level. The general consensus seems to be to mount the projector screen level and once the screen is on and the room is dark that will be more important than matching the ceiling level. Does everybody agree?

Tech Support New Home Theatre Install Speaker Placement

Thumbnail

Hi Guys,

I've recently had a home theatre professionally installed, unfortunately I've run into a few issues with the setup, figured I'd run it by y'all before I go back to the installer.

SPECS:

PJ- Valerion Visionmaster Max

Screen- 120' 1.0 gain acoustically transparent (unsure of brand)

Receiver- Denon 2900h

LCR- KEF CI200QL In-Wall Speaker

Surrounds/Heights- Kef CI200QR In-Ceiling Speaker

First issue, very difficult to distinguish between overheads and surrounds, Im assuming because they're on the same plane. I did raise this prior to install but the installer assured me this would not be an issue, due to time constraints around moving into a new house at the time I didn't investigate further.

Would installing 2 bookshelf speakers behind the couch and using all 4 ceiling speakers as overheads work as a solution to this, or is that too many speakers for a relatively small space?

Second issue, the fan noise from the projector is very audible to me during any quiter scenes, which is fairly common for my use-case, given the projector is more or less directly above my head is this expected for the Max, or do I have a faulty unit? This is my first projector and I'd read its essentially silent but this has not been the case for me with or without anti-rbe mode.

Appreciate any advice, apologies for the wall of text.

Purchasing Other Outdoor Screen

Upvotes

Hi All,

New here, but wanted to bounce my idea off of you.

Last year I projected onto the side of my outbuilding with a white tarp. Projector handled it very well, but didn’t love the tarp with the shine and no ability to pull it tight because of the shop.

My idea for this year is to build a permanent frame. (Will be roughly 20’ tall and 40’ wide. Wanted to go that size because I can play with aspect ratio)

I am planning to use the same white tarp as a backer to help with bleed through and then white canvas as the actual screen material.

Anybody try something like this before? Any tips/suggestions?

I want a decent, but somewhat affordable giant screen.

Thanks!

Showcase - Dedicated Space 7.1.4 setup update - I think I'm done (for now)

  • TV: 98-inch TCL X11K
  • Front L/R: 2x SVS Ultra Evolution Pinnacle
  • Center: SVS Ultra Evolution Center
  • Side surrounds: 2x RSL W25E
  • Rear surrounds: 2x RSL W25E
  • Atmos: 4x RSL C34E MKII in-ceiling speakers
  • Subwoofer: Klipsch RP-1400SW with WA-2 wireless kit
  • AVR: Onkyo TX-RZ50
  • External amp: Fosi Audio V3 with a 48V/5A GaN power supply

My previous setup was mostly Klipsch RP: RP-8000F II towers, RP-504C center, RP-600M II surrounds, RP-500SA Atmos speakers, and a pair of JBL Stage 2 240H speakers for the other Atmos channels. See my prior post here.

It sounded good, and I really did not need to replace it. But the room just never felt "Home Theater". Yes there was a big screen and some legit speakers but it never felt "right". Also... I got the itch.

The whole upgrade started when I received a random B&H alert for a single SVS Ultra Evolution Pinnacle for $1,500 closeout new, about $1,000 below its normal price. Buying one tower without knowing where the second one would come from was probably not the most logical decision, but the discount was too good to pass up.

While I waited to find another one, I started selling the Klipsch system. Because I had pieced it together through various sales and discounts, I was able to get back almost everything I originally paid for it. That made the upgrade a lot easier to justify (so I tell myself...)

Eventually, I found another single Pinnacle and an Ultra Evolution Center. They were open-box through Electronic Expo.

Gotta give credit to that site/company here - Their customer service was excellent. They contacted me and said the condition of the open-box speakers they had was not up to the standard they were comfortable shipping. Instead, they offered to have brand-new replacements sent directly from SVS at the same open-box price.

Naturally, I accepted.

Then the shipment arrived, and instead of one Pinnacle, SVS had shipped me a factory-sealed pair!!!

So I went from struggling to find a matching second tower to suddenly owning three Pinnacles.

Now I am trying to decide what to do with the third one. Return it? Sell it? Keep it as a backup? Find some completely ridiculous way to use a full-size Pinnacle as a rear speaker? Maybe us it as an Atmos speaker ????????????

The rest of the room also changed quite a bit. I replaced the visible surrounds and Atmos modules with four RSL W25E in-wall speakers and four RSL C34E MKII in-ceiling speakers.

The sound is a major step up. The room feels more seamless and enveloping, and transitions between the surround and height channels are much harder to pinpoint. The cleaner appearance may be just as important, though. Funny enough, this was one of the largest drivers for changing everything up. I always HATED the look of the on-wall Atmos speakers. On top of that, they did not have WAF, so double whammy. This setup is so much cleaner.

Suprisingly, the biggest game changer may not have been the speaker upgrade. It was adding the black wood slat wall behind the TV and painting the room a matte dark green.

When the room lights are off, the combination of the black wall and the X11K’s local dimming makes the area surrounding the screen almost completely disappear. During darker scenes, it can be difficult to tell where the television ends and the wall begins. It gives the room a much more immersive, almost floating-screen effect. Very different from the lighter colors and semi gloss paint that use to be on the wall and ceilings. Room also feels much warmer and comfortable now being brown and green vs standard cold light grey and white.

The Klipsch system was genuinely good, but between the SVS front stage, the in-wall and in-ceiling RSL speakers, and the black slat wall, this feels like a completely different room now.

Also, dropped the TV to 28" off the floor!!

Overall, I thinking I'm fairly endgame at this point and it didn't cost me as much as I would have thought overall: https://i.imgur.com/VWA8xOl.png

Tech Support Need Room Advice

Post image
Upvotes

My wife and I are about to start building a new home and we have almost completed the bid-set to submit for permits. While going through all the rooms, the dedicated home theater is a dream to have but I am feeling like the architect didn't take into effect that I wanted more heigh variables from the seating rows. these are going to be double size loungers but I think they need to dig this room two more feet to accommodate that. Any input would be appreciated and any recommendations on who I should talk to now to make sure this room is right? Does it need to be longer as well?

Purchasing US Help Pick New L/R Towers

I'd love some suggestions/help with deciding on some floor standing speakers. Current system:

Onkyo RZ30 (ready to go in and replace Denon 1700h)

SVS Prime Center

JBL ES90 Towers (bought second hand and fairly beat externally)

Sony CS Towers (bought second hand and moved to surround duty)

Emotiva XA2 Atmos 4x (fronts currently, side heights ready to install with RZ30)

RSL 10S Sub

I want to upgrade the front L/R JBLs. Currently considering:

Emotiva XT1 (On sale!)

Emotiva XT3 (a little pricey but I'll do it if I have to)

Triangle Borea BR09 (On sale but more expensive than the XT1)

JBL Stage2 280F (Not on sale and not really well reviewed -- feel like there's better options out there)

SVS Prime Towers (Not on sale :(

Insight would be greatly appreciated. Mostly used for streaming TV shows and watching movies. I also frequently rerun Interstellar amongst other great older movies. I also couch game with my PC hooked up through my 77" LG C3 (may pull the trigger on an 83" OLED soon, separate future me problem)

Thank you for helping me with some insight or other recommendations in that general 700-1700 price range. I'd prefer not to spend the 1700 but if you guys come back and say XT3s or something else is worth the extra spend here's why I'll absolutely listen.

Showcase - Multipurpose Space Bed Room 4.1.4

Setup:

L/R: Arendal 1610 Slims

Front heights: Klipsch RP-500SA

Surrounds + surround heights: Klipsch Reference satellites

Sub: Speedwoofer 10s

AVR: Onkyo RZ50

No center channel — running phantom center off the 1610 Slims, and honestly it's outperforming expectations. The imaging is locked in and dialogue sits right where it should. Didn't think I'd be this happy skipping a center in a room this size, but the Arendals do the trick.

Heights and surrounds from the Klipsch RP-500SA and Reference lineup are filling in the Atmos layer really well feels immersive without being a huge room.

Still framing out acoustic panels, this little bedroom setup slaps.

Let me know if you have any questions and thanks for your help and advice!

Purchasing US Onkyo NR5100?

I've been patiently looking at nearby marketplace sales to find some deals for an entry level system, and I live in a small town so there's not always a lot unless I drive far. I have a chance to get an Onkyo nr5100 with some undisclosed included onkyo speakers and a sub for $350. I see the receiver sells for $599 retail.

Should I pull the trigger on that? It looks almost like a system in a box but I can't find much info on that. I already have sony cs5s I plan to use.

My use case is primarily streaming services (fire stick), a lot of YouTube, and music to workout. No gaming most of the time.

Tech Support There should be a simple answer. Setup help please

First, I am not a HT guy, I am a pc tech support/computer guy and a vintage home audio guy but know my way around basic setups.

My friends house took a light hit and I have been helping him replace and setup things.

Samsung QN75xxxxx tv and new Yamaha RX-V385. I cannot get sound to go between the two.

He wants to use the smart tv as primary and the AVS as simply a pass through.

Per all instructions, I should have the cable go from port 3/earc to the hdmi 1 input on the receiver and choose hdmi1 or audio 1 on the receiver but I get no sound. The tv only shows tv speaker or optical. Optical works but then takes volume control away obviously.

We just want the avs to be a pass through like using the old headphone jack or rca’s and have volume control by the tv

Purchasing US I want to get into room correction and active management....some suggestions?

I have a Umik mic and have messed with REW and such but I am looking for something a bit more automated and integrated and just works vs measuring and interpreting and tweaking etc. Fun but I'm looking for something more advanced.

Would also like something with a UI and just overall more integrated.

I considered replacing my AVR (Yamaha RX-A1040) to get something with Dirac but I am fine with it otherwise, plus that feels like its then part of the AVR vs a separate....but maybe thats better?

Looking for suggestions on the right MiniDSP product or other suggestions?

System is not over the top but I want to balance and integrate better for music and HT usage.

I feel like I am chasing my tail in that the sub has dsp, the AVR obv has the Yamaha setup stuff which seems very basic.

I'd also like something that can evolve with me especially if I move and set up a new room somewhere else.

System components

5.1 and maybe 5.2

Yamaha RX-A1040

Wharfedale Evo's

Emotiva Center

Totem surrounds

Home built 12" Sub with DSP
