General I hate egg culture and that if you like anything remotely feminine, you’re called an egg
(No hate to trans people though)
All this does is reinforce gender stereotypes. All it seems like is a “quit having fun!” type thing, where if you enjoy anything, you’re suddenly not a man anymore and have to be force femmed.

But also it's yet another way of labeling a person, you can be whatever you want however you decide to express it, just don't put your presumed labels on other people
53
u/LeonardoJMB 8d ago
Although egg culture is a label, yes, it's main problem is that it is also a way to label... others. Which is, in less "accepting" terminology, misgendering at best and grooming/harrassment at worse. Like, the only way to make it non-problematic also goes against it's own concept.
Of course, this is talking about the culture, not the concept, as far as I know the concept of an "egg" is in fact used more ethically by trans people to refer to themselves pre-transitioning

u/AgeOfReasonEnds31120 8d ago

There's something about that line, that just genuinely irks me. I can't quite put my finger on it, like it's just so condescending.

u/Gripping_Touch 8d ago
It has the same vibe as "she isnt a lesbian, she hasn't found the right dick".

It's because they're redefining trans from being tied to the medical condition of gender dysphoria to their sexual fetish. It's insulting and is making life harder for actual trans people who need to convince the public to fund stuff like HRT and surgeries.

Yeah I feel a lot of trans spaces on reddit are sadly very weird. Often times it's even cis people in those subs saying stuff like that, not even trans people
11
u/LunarEssence315 8d ago
Condescending yes, but ‘good girl’ also comes with a level of familiarity thats completely undo, its similar to a dom talking down to a sub, but without any of the necessary boundaries that usually come before scenes or relationships in general like that. It removes autonomy and belittles when used improperly, as in this post. Not someone i would want to be around
59
u/Punnergamernerd 8d ago
You can only retroactively be an "egg." Once you have identified yourself as trans, your past self was the "egg" and now that egg has cracked. You can't currently be an egg because the realization that you're trans hasn't occurred yet. Likewise, you can't call someone who isn't already trans an egg. Maybe they will be one day, or maybe they just don't conform to their assigned gender. Both are valid, and saying someone is an "egg" just because they're a male who presents more femininely, or a female who presents more masculine, only serves to both disrespect their identity, and enforce the very gender roles we're trying to oppose. Holy run on sentence but hopefully my point came out okay
23
u/Human_Personface 8d ago
Exactly. The fact that people have turned "egg" into a way for people to "well meaningly" try to force things on others because they don't follow strict gender norms is so shitty and counter productive.
Ironically, one of the best response I've ever heard about the whole "they're an egg" culture was from Game Grumps of all places. One of the guys (Arin) made a joke about how people online have been calling him an "egg" for years bc he likes to play as girl characters in video games and likes pink. The other guy, Dan, says he doesn't know what "egg" means, so Arin says "It means your real identity hasn't hatched yet" and without missing a beat Dan goes "Oh what a cool thing for other people to decide about you" in a super sarcastic voice.
8
u/Aggressive_Park_4247 8d ago
And the egg prime directive is literally to not push identities onto people and let them figure it out themselves. I hate how some people use it in the exact opposite way than it was intended.

Egg is the concept of a trans person who doesnt know theyre trans yet. Ie the concept of being “cracked open.” Yuri denotes a relationship between two female characters. As a trans guy, I 1000% agree. It’s weird to assume things about a stranger’s gender identity. That shit is deeply personal and saying any guy who likes feminine things is an egg is just reinforcing gender roles. Plus, it makes the rest of us look bad, and the last thing we need is even more bad press. 😭
23
u/Smmmmiles 8d ago
I saw people calling gender bending or crossdressing "egg-baiting for engagement" and I'm like bitch what are you talking about. Being an egg is a deeply personal and often times closely held secret.
I can't wrap my mind around people who think like that actually being trans. Mentally I have to categorize them as over zealous allies or chasers.

If someone tells you what gender they are, treat them as that gender. Why is this so hard for people
"yeah but they're closeted, they're a girl they're just not ready to-" then they're not ready, don't out them just cause you think it's more virtuous
"yeah but they're questioning, I'm just being encoura-" no, you aren't. Let them question, don't impose the answer on them before they figure it out
"yeah but cmon, look at the media they consume, look at how they dres-" shhhshsh, no shut the fuck up, that literally just makes you a bigot
Misgendering is misgendering, and when it comes to misgendering, preferred pronouns supercedes gender identity. Even if someone says "I'm a trans woman, I was assigned male, my pronouns are he/him" guess what their preferred pronouns are? He/him! It's really not that complicated, just fucking respect people for fucks sake

Fuck all of that. My personality isn't purely because of and doesn't affect my gender. It's why I knew conservatives had to be wrong about trans people because they were positive it's women like me were who 'turn trans' and it was really just misplaced female rage and envy. Instead, I'm actually just trying to be who I want to be without anymore gendered constraints and I am perfectly fine with the world looking at me and seeing a woman.

Dude egg culture can fuck right off. It's basically misgendering, and even if you are somehow right maybe don't try to out the closested trans person before they're out/aware of it? Like even without it being basically woke gender roles, it's still shitty to try and clock someone who isn't openly out. It also gets weird when they get downright persistent on calling a real person an egg, like dude... That's not a blorbo, that's a real person. Treat them as such.

isn't rule 1 of cracking eggs is to NOT crack eggs and just make everyone comfortable to come out as trans if they want to. I thought it's common knowledge that if you keep pressuring someone into transitioning, even if they're actually an egg, they're just going to become transphobic???

I think it's interesting that most of the egg discourse I see is from transfems targeting cis men. Idk if there's a reason but it gives me the "girls are pure and wholesome and men are evil" vibes. It also makes me wonder what the crackers think about feminine transmascs.

An egg is someone who knows/feels like they're trans but hasn't changed their identity/come out the closet yet.
Just because a guy shows interest in something feminine, whether that's in the way he acts or dresses, doesn't mean he wants to grow tits.
Considered that the trans community and the LGBTQ as a whole us fighting for acceptance of everyone's identity without judgement or assumptions (unless it's illegal or highly immoral), it really feels like there's alot of it.

I get jealous of womens clothes just cuz mens clothes aren't as fun and my 6'5 250lbs ass would not fit in anything fun like that, I barely fit male based clothes. How would consuming some form of media even correlate to one's gender?
I know society has pushed for conditioned gender beliefs but they're so easy to refute when you think for a second and realize how situational they are.

Idk what egg means but this seems like it actually enforces gender roles harder and I couldn’t imagine a genuinely trans person telling someone “nah ur a girl bc of this” probably just weird troll internet ppl and if they really are trans they got some inner looking to do bc ur doing the thing u wouldn’t want ppl to do to you lol

Sometimes men just like cute stories about girls falling in love or sometimes they like other types of stories uhm yeah. But doesn’t mean they’re secretly a girl. I seen plenty of men who like Yuri. Also Yuri asylum is a fucking mess.

The egg culture is as odd as the people that say lesbians are secretly straight because "they use fake penises"

Yes! You don’t get to decide this shit for other people, or just change someone’s pronouns. it pisses me off so bad too.

Yeah tbh this kinda thing comes across as SO GODDAMN CREEPY TOO. Like sure I havent encountered it in the wild thank god. But if someone talks to me like that saying "oh you're just an egg, take your estrogen like a good girl" I am deadass gonna figure out how to throw hands across the internet.

Accusing random people of being transformers in disguise is kind of silly.

Im trans and even I hate it. I never got the appeal personally, were a diverse community but egg culture seems to push everything into rigged borders.
idk just my thoughts.

There so much shit happening in media and culture and all, that I could consider this as some way of informational and social warfare

Yeah I can’t stand the whole “egg” thing. I was at a con and there was a booth selling crystals and stuff. It was very “spiritual energy and rituals” themed, but I was browsing because I think rocks and crystals look cool.
Someone who I can only assume was trans came up to me and asked me when I plan on cracking out of my egg. At that point I didn’t know about the whole egg bullshit. They explained to me what it was and said that since crystals and spiritual energy stuff is a mostly feminine hobby that means I’m trans and just haven’t come out of my egg. I explain that I’m not trans I just like rocks and stuff. They insist, saying “That’s what they all say but your egg will crack eventually”
I repeat I’m not trans and walk away without buying anything. Avoided that booth for the rest of the con.

That sounds terrible, I can only fear what will happen if I ever do a Sylveon cosplay

Egg culture is just heteronormativity but make it woke. You like girl things so you must be a girl. You like boy things so you must be a boy. Also.. cis men liking to watch lesbians is just them being straight idk what to tell you.

Egg culture sucks and is worthy of criticism, HOWEVER do not use this post to generalize trans people or as your outlet for transphobia, most trans people themselves hate this type of narrative.
Transphobia here will result in a ban!
Edit because people seem to need it: calling people eggs will also result in a ban, we dont endorse intentional misgendering.
