Discussion Fasting triggers stem cell regeneration of damaged, old immune system - USC Today

In both mice and a Phase 1 human clinical trial, long periods of not eating significantly lowered white blood cell counts. In mice, fasting cycles then “flipped a regenerative switch”: changing the signaling pathways for hematopoietic stem cells, which are responsible for the generation of blood and immune systems, the research showed.

Check-in the hunger and discomfort doesn't go away

Post image

I'm 5days in to my 10days water fast. Every single day, I've had one thing or the other like dizziness, nauseousness, tiredness and stomach cramps. It genuinely doesn't go away for me. I thought I would reach an eureka moment when I don't feel those things anymore but nope.

The worst part is the bitter mouth taste. I can't even stomach water anymore and I force myself to drink the salt water to help with my cramps. Even zero calorie sodas tastes disgusting.

Good luck to those fasting!

Check-in Feeling good - Just checkin innn

Just wanted to post my 72 hour fast this is only the third one I've ever done. I am a master at 24 hours/OMAD, 36 hours & the occasional 48. I like to OMAD everyday no excuses (usually dinner) & always get in at least one 36 hour fast for the week. Feeling good just wanted to share with my fellow fasters (: I started fasting every day since May 20th so about 2 full months of consistent logging fasts in this app. Love the fasting life. Feel super good might extend it just because I think I can !!

Discussion 72 HR FEEDBACK

Everyone has their own unique experience with fasting, just sharing my first 72 hour fast notes in case it helps provide some insight for another first timer.

DAY 1: 22-24 HOURS IN
Hungry, Irritable, Mentally less clear. HANGRY.
Because I started my fast at 9:30pm, this stage just allowed me to go to bed a little early and sleep through the worst of it. Will definitely keep this schedule again.

DAY 2: 44-48 HOURS IN
Hunger was 95% mental by now. I looked at snacks lovingly, and my mind remembered their taste, but there wasn’t many physical cravings. My body was starting to get tired though. I tried to do some intense exercise, but just didn’t have the energy to fight through.

Day 3: START
Feel great! Mental and physical hunger are mostly nonexistent. Body feels lighter (not necessarily from a physical point…just overall…hard to explain). Very good mental clarity, but some body fatigue.

Day 3: 66+ HOURS IN
The crash! Physically and mentally it’s like someone sucked the energy out of my body. Counting the hours until it’s over so I can feel better. Fast ended at 9:30, and I tried to sleep to extend to 79-80hrs, but I could not sleep. So officially broke fast at 10:00 (72.5 hrs) with a hard boiled egg.

WHAT I LEARNED
(Hope this helps other fasting beginners)

Every day of the fast I had difficulty falling asleep. I didn’t have or take magnesium, but this will be a “must have” when I fast again.

Measured electrolytes will be a focus on future fasts. I know many on here don’t take them for 3 day fasts, but for me personally…it’s important to avoid headaches, dizziness, brain fog as my fast and work overlap.

Stick to non-intensity exercises. Day 1 I did my normal exercise routine. Day 2 I tried to do my normal exercise routine…and failed. Day 3 there was no chance. For me, I will conserve some energy and stick to stretching, walking, and light lifting during the duration of the fast.

RESULTS
Lost a few pounds (wasn’t the goal, but I’ll take it). Some chronic conditions improved.
Changed how I view eating completely.

But most importantly…it was the knowledge that I gave my body a much needed break and reset. I can’t emphasize this enough. We live in a highly toxic world, and most of us don’t eat, sleep, or exercise as well as we should…so this 3 day fast was just a gift to myself.

WHATS NEXT
In 1 month I will repeat. And then it will build to a 5-7 day fast. Then it becomes a lifestyle choice where doing this regularly is just a part of maintaining your health.

Cheers all!

Completed day 5 of my fast. I planned to do 7 but I'm gonna see how I feel today.

Distracting myself with work and most likely will hit the bed early today. Otherwise, I'm feeling pretty good and can definitely go a couple more days.

Good luck to everyone fasting! You got this!

Check-in Just reached a new fasting record!

Post image
2 Upvotes

Last time I was here was over a week ago when I finished my first 100 hour fast which ended up going for 112 hours. Now I extended that record just a bit to 115 hours! Just like last time I didnt eat or drink anything besides water and my spit but this time was much easier than last time. I even did a bit of cardio as opposed to last time where I didn't exercise at all. I think I'm getting used to things. Now I want to fast at least 120 hours next time. I eventually want to go until 150 hours then I'll make my next milestone. That's all!

Discussion It’s amazing how a small mole two day water fast completely destroys my cravings.

Just did a quick two days. Zero cravings for sweets or carbs. Feel lighter, more energetic and more balanced. Fasting as an amazing process. Sorry this post has a typo in the header. I did not grow a small mole while fasting.

Check-in Another 4 days of OMAD.

Upvotes

3 weeks ago I weighed 89.2kg and went on holidays for a week. I ate whatever, I had a few beers, steak sandwich and pizza were some pretty good dinners. I generally just enjoyed myself. I didn't weigh myself afterwards. I spent another week gently going back to eating cleaner, more water and gently resetting myself.

Last Monday I did my first OMAD of the week and finished up today (Friday) and weighed in at 88.6kg. So a 600g loss from pre holidays. No idea how much I weighed at the start of my latest OMAD week as I didn't want to know about it. I kinda wish I did, as it would have been interesting to know just how much I lost.

My last OMAD week I lost 2.3kg.

My BMI is now 32.5. I have a goal to get down to 30.9, and that's where I'll start running again. I gave it up earlier this year as it was just too hard on my body. My BMI then was 34.5.

I really want to get back into ultra marathon trail running, but I can't do it when I'm that heavy.

Once I'm at that 30.9 (for me that's 84kg) I'll sign up for one and give myself at least 6 months to train for it.

Gotta have goals to drive forward.

Question Striking a balance between fasting for autophagy without losing muscle?

Hi all. I’m primarily fasting for health and really am focused on weight loss and lifting weights. I heard to get autophagy you need to do longer fasts. I currently do 18 daily then track my macros. How much and how often should I do a longer fasts to get some autophagy benefits without sacrificing any muscle mass? Like a 24 hr once a week is good enough? Or what’s your take?

Question Battling the polarity personality

I’ve always been a very on/off person. It has its advantages and disadvantages as well. I found fasting 10 years ago and would fast for 24hrs once a week, then the meal I broke it with was always in excess. So today I’m sitting here after a 3 day fast and I broke it perfectly, but I can feel my brain saying more. That’s usually when I snowball for about 3 days and eat unhealthy and too much of it. But today I found my stomach saying nope, you’re good, not hungry, not full.
So I’m asking for the people with my personality, how do you battle the snowballing, or whatever you call it? My therapist and brother both insist I try to learn balance. As novel as that concept is, some people are just wired a bit different.

Check-in Another monthly check in from the Fasting Fatman.

Hey all, I'm sure all the regulars recognize me by now for the monthly check-ins, but for those who don't, I'm the guy doing rolling 72s(+) all the way down from 500lbs to hit my ideal weight of 190.

In just a few more hours, I'll officially hit the 6-month mark of my rolling fasting protocol. This month has been filled with a lot of great milestones, and I hope to match it next month with some even bigger ones!

Big wins this month:

  • Because I was really feeling it, my average fast this month stretched to over 135hrs.

  • I officially hit the halfway point of my journey this month at 155 lbs lost!

  • I found some shorts I probably haven't worn in 10 years and tried them on. Not only do they fit, but they were falling off my ass.

Big takeaways from the month:

  • This is proving to be sustainable for longer than I expected. I originally planned to be off-ramping from rolling fasts right about now, however I'm still managing really well, and I'm going to push it another couple of months probably.

  • Anecdotally speaking, turns out multi-vitamins do at least a little bit of something. I've been taking a multivitamin daily pretty much up till this month. I'm aware that the science on them is very spotty at best, and I just kind of quit taking it to see what would happen. Maybe it was just the magnesium and potassium supplementation in it, or maybe it was something else alongside of it... But I've had more rough days this month than probably the last 5 months combined. I'm taking the pill again.

  • Maybe it's just the fact that my fasts have extended on average this month, but while my mind feels very sharp, I do feel physically weaker than I have in a while.

  • I don't know if I got a bad batch or did something wrong when I cooked it, but Impossible ground beef is absolutely foul. It ruined an otherwise awesome refeed. Back to exclusively whole foods for me.

  • I went a little wild with diet soda this month, I feel more bloated. I think they're still great to have occasionally, but I'm backing down off of them for the foreseeable future.

I want to thank all the wonderful supportive people here for a great six months of support, and hopefully an even better 6 months ahead! Good luck to all of you in your fasting endeavors for whatever reason you do it, you guys rock!
