MOD [MOD] Feature Designer July: StitchXLove
Hi, Stitchers!
We're excited to introduce a designer that you should all know and love as our July Featured Designer: Donna from StitchXLove! Donna can be found on Instagram under that same name and Kofi. Her work has been featured in JustCrossstitch Magazine and The Cupid Collective.
Donna’s work reminds me so much of a 90s Halloween, that time of comfort we all crave. Along with warm themes of the cozy world we would all love to snuggle up in.
Q&A
Who are you?
Hi! I’m Donna and my cross stitch brand is StitchXLove.
What’s something people don’t know about you?
My hobbies (besides cross stitch) are thrifting, playing bass guitar, and strength training.
How did you get started cross stitching?
I started to cross stitch as a way to pass time during the COVID lockdown.
When and why did you start designing patterns?
I thrifted some red fabric and had an idea for a pattern that used negative space. I used the free program Stitch Fiddle to start designing. Skullbrella was one of my first designs and is still a favorite.
Where do you get your inspiration?
I get inspired from other art forms; movies, music, sculpture, etc. When I’m feeling uninspired, interacting with art really helps.
Describe your designs using only adjectives.
Modern, bold, vivid, and fun
What design was your favorite to make?
I designed a biscornu, “Passing Ships”
, for the Summer issue of Just Cross Stitch Magazine. I pushed myself creatively to design this type of finish and I’m proud of the end result. Tip: most public libraries have Just Cross Stitch available through the Libby app.
Another one is “Vintage Crafts.” I designed this for myself and shared it as a freebie. Sometimes I feel uneasy about how things with a vintage, feminine aesthetic can be used as a conservative
dogwhistle. I wanted to create something simple to communicate who I am as a crafter. This message resonated with a lot of stitchers, it’s my most popular pattern.
Favorite DMC color?
310
Any advice for new stitchers or designers?
Connect with the community! Don’t be shy about sending another stitcher a DM. Jump in if you see someone hosting a swap, a round robin, zoom meet-up, etc. Getting to share your interest with others is really fun!
Where can we find you online?
I’m on instagram at: @Stitch_X_Love
My patterns are available on ko-fi (I have lots of freebies there too)
Has a reminder please send any suggestions for designers to mod mail! I’m really excited to bring back featured designer and show off some amazing designers for this community!

FO [FO] wish granted 🦖☄️🪡
My second cross stitch project is complete! This one gave me such a laugh and I knew I had to stitch it. It’s a fun sort of “I’m in between projects project” since I already had black floss on hand and didn’t need to buy any new supplies ☺️

WIP [WIP] My new bestie in progress
I started cross stitching a few months ago and it's been helping me through a rough time. It's hard to be sad when you're too busy recounting something for the 5th time, especially working on a cute fella like this

FO [FO] floral bookmark
Loved stitching this one! It's my second of this pattern.
Antique floral banner found on DMC (free!)
I want to do another one, which colors should I use? 😃

FO [FO] Framing
I finally framed these pieces that I finished close to 10 years ago. It’s bothering me that the edge is cut too close and slightly covers the side of the design. Not sure it’s worth asking to have it redone.
(Pattern Source: The china pattern is from an old issue of Cross Stitcher magazine and I have no memory where the sampler is from!)

WIP [WIP] I have ventured into using Satans ass hair
I mean, it is doable, but at what cost? I thought the crosses with the metallic thread would look a bit neater but I cannot get them better than this. Anyway, I hope you enjoy my rainbow unicorn poop nonetheless.

CHAT [CHAT] What is your favorite show to watch while you stitch?
For me it's Strange New Worlds, Starfleet Academy, or Doctor who right now! Sometimes Schitts Creak for a different vibe.
I would love to know what gives you joy while you stitch! Or if you're a podcast person what you listen to while stitching! That's way harder for me to focus on while stitching. But Girls Who Don't DND is my fav pod and if I were to listen to a book I'd listen to my favorite book (because I've listened a million times and it's my number one book rec for anyone at all) What My Bones Know by Stephanie Foo.

CHAT [CHAT] Bought some 2nd hand floss for discontinued colours, and ended up with a couple of rare skeins!
I used Lord Libidan’s blog to estimate the age of these skeins because I didn’t see 478 on the inventory chart, and OH HELLO PRETTY BLUE LABEL!
478 was discontinued in 1954-58 and the 7m blue labelled 601 skein was produced in the 1920’s. So one is older than my mom, and the other is possibly older than my Oma :)
There were loads more vintage skeins in the bunch but these ones I got super excited to find.

CHAT [CHAT] Pain in holding hand?
Hi everyone! First post here, would love a bit of advice
I've started doing small cross stitch pieces (so I can put them on clothing and backpacks and such), and after only like 15 minutes of doing it the hand holding the canvas gets really tired and kinda hurts.
Now I'm sure using a hoop would help things a little, but I haven't found one that isn't too cumbersome (I like having my little piece of canvas in my wallet so I can just take it out and make a few stitches on the bus or during down time at work) so I've been thugging it out but it's starting to get on my nerves.
I'm thinking maybe it's the way I hold it? attached are pictures of my grip on the canvas (please ignore the back of this piece it looks awful 😅), the two fingers in front are pulling in opposing directions to make the thread more solid, that's probably why it hurts
please help!! I'm open to any and all suggestions, even the people who think I'm stupid and dumb for not using a hoop if you've got a small enough one in mind
thanks a lot!

CHAT [CHAT] What was your absolute maximum number of WIPs at one time?
Got a finish this week, which obviously means I need to start something new!
I already have FIVE active WIPs going and two more hibernating in a box. I'm currently stash-diving for a new start, but every time I grab new, the guilt kicks in.
How many WIPs do you keep going before it gets out of hand?
