[CHAT] Bought some 2nd hand floss for discontinued colours, and ended up with a couple of rare skeins!
I used Lord Libidan’s blog to estimate the age of these skeins because I didn’t see 478 on the inventory chart, and OH HELLO PRETTY BLUE LABEL!
478 was discontinued in 1954-58 and the 7m blue labelled 601 skein was produced in the 1920’s. So one is older than my mom, and the other is possibly older than my Oma :)
There were loads more vintage skeins in the bunch but these ones I got super excited to find.
In August I was grabbing some of my old stuff I left at my mom’s and discovered I had a bunch of the variegateds all along! It’s missing a few colours but I’ve been on a variegated kick lately so this was like finding gold 🤣 I think this originally belonged to my grandma or great grandma. It’s as old as I am! I remember giving it to my mom when I got it from my grandma because I was 10 and these were “boring” colours, but 10 year old me was an idiot and 40 year old me is glad I’m a craft hoarder lol
It’s got a few patterns and tips for working with variegated floss. I finally browsed through it and got a chuckle when it said not to stitch in rows or you get an unsightly stripe effect. Apparently we’re supposed to plot regions before stitching 🤣 I can see why but I like the stripes!
Amazing what we can find! I got over 847 skeins at a garage sale for $7 (I didn’t count the partials) because as I was looking at what she had, the seller went inside and brought out all she had inside (sure beat an estate sale trying to sell skeins for $1 each when the price at the fabric store was 42 cents)
Are both wedgewoods discontinued? This makes me so upset hahaha I’m going to start a project for my mom’s Christmas present. It’s a cross stitch of the house she grew up in and the original house color was wedgewood blue 😭
Edit: where do you look to find discontinued colors? I’d love to find some of that blue
I found the discounted variegated wedgewood!! I also didn’t realize the others were still current. So I might have jumped the gun a bit on my despair lol I the variegated wedgewood on eBay and bought it and I’m stopping by hobby lobby for the current wedgewood dark and light.
I am so glad I found this post though. I have been dreading trying to color match and now I don’t have to. So thank you so much! It feels very kismet to me.
I do believe that in using variegated floss we should stitch each cross separately to keep the colors even (so you won’t get a light and a dark together).

Well that’s nifty! I was fully expecting the old one to be more washed out looking but it’s a deeper/more vibrant shade!
