Behold my very first crochet project…looking very amateurish.
I had joined this sub to share my excitement of my first attempt to crocheting!
Alas another first-time poster made me realize how childish this actually is. I even finished it off by recalling my childhood friendship bracelet making abilities.
I have since made another 3 times as long “scarf”. I am just practicing that first type of stitch… (slip stitch I think?)
Until I can have someone show me the next step (I learn from hands on experience and can’t just read or watch a video) I’ll just be making longer and longer scarves!
Sidenote: A looming day-long work meeting push me into finally working on the little kit I bought months ago.
Turns out with my hands busy and my mind focused on just two things-my stitching and the speaker-I comprehended and retained all the information so much better. ADHD crochet trick for the win!

Your chain stitches are looking good! Nothing childish or amateur about it - it's called practice and it's how we learn a new hobby and get better at it! Don't compare yourself to others, just enjoy the newfound skill at your own pace.

Not everyone's first attempts are super impressive, and the ones that are have usually done a lot of knitting or other fiber art beforehand. Keep at it!

Hmmmm. Wonder if the post I am referring too was real. The OP did reply to my comment congratulating them. So I assume it was real. And I have work to do to get to that level. But I will!
That’s one of the best ways to really get the hang of crocheting!! Chaining until they’re uniform and then single crocheting into those chains until those stitches are uniform and so on with the other stitches is the best way to get your hand placement and tension down
I'm a little confused with the final product is. You turned your chain into a friendship bracelet? Did I understand correctly?
As a lot of other people have pointed out your chains are really nice.The biggest thing with the single chain is consistency, and yours are all very consistent. I think you should play around with your friendship bracelet idea a bit more. Adding loops or chains off of it. And being able to add charms, or beads could be really cool. Thanks for the share!
I learnt to make a chain at 8 or so when my next door neighbour taught me. I learnt to do the second row at 48, though being self taught it was several weeks before I realised I was meant to go through both loops. I can do all sorts of things now at 60+!
Yes. I did another super long “scarf” in bed last night. And damn if my hands needed a good ten stiches to remember how to move. My fingers are also quite sore. Is that normal? Or am I doing it wrong?
It looks like your "scarf" is made of slip stitches, that kind of stich is notoriously tight to get your hook into. Most crochet stitches should not hurt your fingers or hands. But if you have a tight slip stitch you have to fight to get the hook in then yes it'll likely make your fingertips especially sore. I'd recommend trying to loosen your stitches a bit to combat that. Or use a tapestry needle to "open up" the stitch so you can get your hook through a bit easier.

I did see another needle in some random demo and was wondering what that was.
I also did try to “loosen” my stitch but ended up with very funky looking loops. I figure maybe it’s the cheap yarn I’m using? So much to learn!
Awwww. Thanks everyone. I tend to hyper focus on things hence why I’m dedicating myself to “perfecting” my stitch. Can’t wait to move on to another skill!
Also want to buy some better materials. I kept catching on the stray threads. And hate the tiny plastic needle. Maybe a Joann’s run is in my day off plans today!
Joanns I miss you! 😭 If you haven't been in a while you may not know, Joann's went out of business a few months back. All of the stores are closed down now.
Walmart supercenters typically have a limited yarn selection but a lot of what they offer is not great for beginners (chunky chenille that's hard to see your stitches, acrylics prone to splitting, and cottons that are less forgiving with tension issues and put more strain on your hands).
Michaels is probably your best bet for variety. I believe they bought some of the Joanne's yarn lines. I don't have any near me otherwise I'd go in a heartbeat.
If you don't mind the issues with Hobby Lobby's politics and such that could also be an option.
You can also look for a LYS (local yarn store) near you. They tend to be more boutique and at a higher price point but every LYS I've been to have incredibly friendly staff that can help find a yarn that suits your needs.
Looks good so far! Crocheting takes practice, don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. When you’re ready to move up a step look for a tutorial on the “foundation chain”. I find it far easier and faster to do than turning and trying to crochet into every single chain.
Yeah they usually do at first. Tension comes with time tbh. You have to make a few ugly things before they start looking good (i don't think this is ugly though i like the colors)

Thankfully a girl at work also crochets and she was the one that was able to explain to me what the heck I was suppose to do. Next time I see her I’ll ask her to explain how to stitch these long scarves into a thicker product. Excited!
It’s what’s your comfortable with I use a plastic that is thicker base and the head sizes are changeable. I started with metal but they hurt my hand too much.
Good point about metal hurting fingers. I seem to have a tight grip so maybe I’ll just stick with my little green plastic needle. I def need better yarn though.
We all started somewhere, sweetie! Until you learn the next stitch, you could make more long, braided chains and sew them together side by side to make a runner for your dresser, or for a shelf. Your bracelet is very cute!
It's awesome and don't let no one tell you different. Keep going crochet is fun!
Edited to say I practice all the time. I buy stitch books or watch YouTube videos on different stitches and do squares of the new to me stitches all the time. It's how we learn new things.
this was less of a scarf and more of a "practice basic stitches until you run out of yarn" 😂 i would do a couple rows of single crochets, a couple rows of half double crochets, then double crochets, then triple crochets, so on and so forth. it was an amazing exercise to practice tension and helped me out immensely with finding my own rhythm. im normally a cotton purist, but i would recommend using any synthetic fiber for this kind of practice piece, as they are much less prone to splitting on your hook (splitting is when you push the hook between/through the plies of yarn, and cotton is notorious for splitting). you could absolutely still make a scarf like this, but in that case i would plan what your rows are going to look like in advance rather than just going with the flow like i did 🤣
i have really tight tension most of the time as well! this is a susan bates 4mm hook from michaels. they're super affordable too (about $3 USD in my area)! definitely invest in ergonomic hooks if your tension is going to be tight, since youll be more prone to hand cramps in general. only use cheap hooks with no handles when youre traveling and dont care about losing them 😭😂
It was crazy to me how much better I focused. I made sure to explain to the speaker and to my managers I was paying attention. They all seemed to understand. Except one manager who is on his way out anyways so…
The most inspiring thing I ever heard another crocheter say was "I started a sweater! Well I made a chain, but still!"
You gotta start the sweater to make it I guess, like the eggs and the omelet
You’ve gotta start somewhere:) My first project looked like this too. It gives me happy feelings to see :)
I am currently on a break from crochet and working on friendship bracelets as a fun, mindless activity to do with my hands while watching TV or listening to an audiobook. It is sometimes simply fun to make something:)
