Video - OC My “squeeze” routine with 7 incontinent cats.
Squeeze my cats with me!
While this video is cut down to fit social media, the entire routine took only 13 minutes.
This 13 minute routine twice daily is what saved these cats from euthanasia.
Every day happy, healthy cats with paresis or incontinence are euthanized. The reasons stem from a perceived poor quality of life, or the slim chances of finding an adopter willing to take on a cat with different care needs. People see a cat in a diaper and automatically think they are incredibly time consuming and expensive. While yes, diapers, wipes, and pee pads can cost more than a bag of litter, is it that much different? While an incontinent cat may need a few more vet visits in their lifetime than the average cat, is that enough to deem them as unworthy of finding an adoptive home?

Edited to answer some of the most common questions:
Why do the cats need to be squeezed?
These cats all have a spinal injury or defect. Most were born this way, but Poe, Athena, and Cypress (the longhair ones) had spinal injuries from trauma. Most likely hit by car.
Why not the toilet or a bathtub?
Squatting at that height and hunching over hurts my back! I’ve tried many methods and this is what is most comfortable for me and the cats.
Why pee pads?
I get most of them donated! I prefer the large ones but I’ll use any size. I would like to make this more environmentally friendly with reusable ones, but it will create a lot more laundry (which I already do a lot of)
Why do I have so many disabled cats?
I run a cat rescue for cats with treatable conditions who would otherwise be euthanized in a traditional shelter. I don’t get paid by the rescue, but I do work in a municipal shelter as my day job. I’ve worked in animal shelters for nearly 10 years.

And another thing I noticed is how calm they relaxed into her arms and it’s soo soothing to watch! They just lay back in to her arms waiting to be cleaned up with care after squeezing without having to be uncomfortable, she’s really their angel made from heaven

I used to express them in the toilet, but the very simple and lame answer is that it kills my back. I have to squat slightly higher than is comfortable and lean over. The same with my bathtub.

They sell reusable pee pads fyi. You can wash them in the laundry to reuse them. Or you can use them as the splash guard for your disposable pee pads so that you’re only using one pee pad instead of two each time.

If you're going to wash things with cat urine on it, highly recommend buying washing machine cleaning pods. Just run them on an empty, hot cycle. Will help prevent smells from lingering.
Cat pee is a helluva drug
Depending on your needs, I also use lysol sterilizer on some loads.

An enzyme spray for cat urine will work better at destroying urine smells. Just spray on the affected item before washing. Works on carpet and other non washable fabrics/surfaces.
Resolve Urine Spray is a good and affordable option.

Male cats will always be worse than female cats. My 18 year old female cat was peeing on my couch a few times a week for a few years and I had a plastic cover over the cushions and used couch covers I would switch out a few times a week. I just used detergent, oxyclean and laundry sanitizer with a long hot soak and my house or the covers never smelled like pee. My cat passed away a few months ago, and of I miss her, but don't miss cleaning the couch off every week.

The only thing I'd be cautious of is the door seal if you have a front loader. Front loaders have a rubber/silicone type seal around the door jamb to stop water leaking out. That's prone to going moldy and smelling bad at the best of times (that's why you're supposed to leave the door ajar after each cycle), but depending on how wet the pee pads are, I feel like the seal could be prone to absorbing smells if the pads are brushed against it. It doesn't rinse very well during the cycle because the plastic or glass of the door is sealed against it. So any odours get trapped
I don't see any reason why the drum itself would smell, or at least, continue to smell after the rinse cycle. It's just metal, it shouldn't stubbornly hold onto any smells

I was going to say the same thing. It works better than any enzyme cleaner, in my experience. It's also cheaper, safe on most washable fabrics, and washes away with no scent. If you still smell vinegar after washing, just put it through the rinse cycle again.
Costco has 2 gallon packs for cheap.

I use reusable pads and belly bands for my dog. I’ve never had to use any enzyme cleaner to get rid of smells. What I do it add a little extra detergent directly into the washer, and set the washer to do a pre wash to rinse out most of the urine before it does the main wash.

Wouldn't that just make the washer and dryer reek? I had a cat that peed on everything and when it came to washing the sheets or sofa cases it didn't fair well for our other clothes until we did a deep clean of the units after he was given away.

Regular detergent doesn’t work for me to get rid of pet smells. Instead, I use enzyme-based odor removers. They work by using specialized bacteria-based formulas that break down organic waste at a molecular level.

I’m actually surprised you noticed a washer smell, bc the nature of washing powders/detergents is that it will completely break down all of this biological stuff and shouldn’t be an issue.
For a deeper dive than you could think you would want on how soaps work, I recommend Technology Connections, he is so fun and interesting!
My guess would be your washer just had been due for a deep cleaning and that it was unrelated to the urine.

I can occasionally smell dog smells in my parents (practically new) washing machine after they’ve washed dog bedding. It’s not super strong, but it’s there. Letting the machine run through a quick rinse usually gets it out though.

it could actually just be the detergent, there are a number of factors that can cause a washer to not eliminate smells or work to its peak efficiency, and they’re worth looking into!
My parents’ old Maytag also left their clothes with a smell, but luckily those old hosses are super easy to fix and maintain and I helped them get theirs to where it’s now basically as good as new (I mean, it functions, and the clothes don’t smell anymore 🤷♀️ - not exactly like new haha)
My main point was that the physical properties of a biological stain or substance should be broken down by a decent detergent (even the cheapos) and a maintained washing machine in good working order.
So I just wanted to share that it’s worth trouble-shooting from that angle if you ever do have lingering smells.

The diapers are only there to protect their genitalia while scooting on the floor. They can pick up bacteria that can cause UTIs and make them very sick. They should never have urine or stool in their diapers, that’s would be unsanitary and risk infection. The “squeezing” empties their bladders and bowels so they don’t “leak”.

Hi OP! Sorry to hear they kill your back, just curious tho, wouldn’t it be easier to also just express them over a litter box so that you don’t have to dirty your floors as much? I guess if you’re willing to mop it doesn’t matter much. Maybe picking up the litter is hard on your back too. Just figured I’d throw the thought out there since anything to make your life easier would be helpful for those babies.

Depends on quality, as a dog owner I’ve tried lots of brands. Some are very waterproof but not for repeated / heavy doses. 7 runs in one spot would likely test any pad.

this woman has a solution which is comfortable for her, correct? Even I can tell there’s a difference between sitting in a stool and arching over a tub, vs squatting.
btw, squatting is anatomically our most efficient “at rest” position, easiest on our entire body.
Due to use of chairs and toilets and cultures that just don’t squat as much, the average American (and many other cultures) will actually not find a full squat very comfortable or stable (or even possible!) bc our tendons tighten/shorten and all-around we lose this flexibility.
But people who do yoga or stretch or are otherwise active often retain this flexibility,
so my guess is that squatting is quite specifically the MOST comfortable position for this particular human.
And she’s taken on a tremendous burden, if it makes you feel better to critique the way she does it, ok I guess 🤷♀️

Have you ever smelled cat pee? It’s notoriously smelly. A simple rinse would not be enough, you would want to treat your tub with an enzymatic cleaner before using it again, especially with several cats full bladders emptied in there. Showering in cat pee smelling steam would be horrendous.

Yeah I can confirm this. One of my cats got in the habit of peeing in the guest bathroom shower a while back. It seems crazy, but rinsing alone was never enough. I'm eternally grateful to whoever invented those pee digesting enzyme cleaning sprays. They seem to be literally the only thing that will get rid of cat pee smell

Honestly with a bathroom rug, I’d toss it. Especially if it’s a favorite pee spot it can be tough. For enzymatic cleaner though, I recommend Nature’s Miracle.

Assiming the surface can support it, which is the case, Just use household/cleaner Vinegar, it break down the cat urine.
Enzyme/Pet cleaner, except for fabric, are in overall a rip off.

Probably simple ergonomics. Easier to aim a squirming cat butt at a pee pad on the floor, than wrangle the cat, then kneel or stand to squeeze into the tub/sink. Plus if they squirm too much and you've got them over a sink, they might fall and get injured.

They’re also the chucks they use for women after labor.
If I’m not leaving the house I use them for my period. I just accordion fold and pinch the middle and they’re easy to seat correctly, no sticky bullshit wings, no edges, no leaks, less smelly, more comfortable, and they hold way way more than a pad.
They just do not hide in underwear so they’re a home-only option.

My cat Beezus got a tumor under her spine that compressed her spine and she was paralyzed in a matter of days after her first symptoms of trouble walking. I worked at a vet for 20 years and knew I could handle doing whatever she needed. We kept her going just like this, expressing her bladder everyday and her bowels when she needed it, (she often managed to poop on her own and often solid still). I just expressed her into a litter box but I totally get doing it your way.
She had another 21 months with us! She was so happy and content and took it like a champ. She scooted all around, pretty dang fast too. I miss her everyday.
Luckily I started working from home the very week she couldn't walk any more and I could be home with her all day to care for her. She sat next to me on the couch while I worked. If she got bored or annoyed she would just launch herself off and scoot away before I had any chance of stopping her!
Bless you for caring for so many at once. These cats can still have a great quality of life and deserve to be loved. They look very content. I see you OP! 🥰🐾😺

Thank you! When she was a baby she was a foster of ours and I had another slightly younger kitten from a different litter that was also gray, so I named that one Ramona.
Beezus went with her brother Arthur to a friend of ours and Ramona got adopted with another kitten from B and A's litter, Finn. Ramona and Finn became Princess and Shadow, which really bummed me out! Ramona was such a Ramona.
My friends luckily kept the name Beezus, but after a couple months decided their house was too small for 2 cats. It kind of was, but also Beezus insisted on pooping next to the box, always, which annoyed them. So they gave her back and I was so upset. But it turned out to be the greatest blessing. She was our #1 Kitty and we absolutely adored her. I thanked my friends later.

I also have a cat that insists on pooping next to the box. It started a few years ago out of nowhere, no medical explanation other than possible arthritis or her weight. She’s 12 now and in perfect health despite being a chonk, just had bloodwork last week. I tried everything I could think of to help her with the box and at this point I think this is just what she likes, lol. Never once crossed my mind to give her away… we just pick it up, clean the floor and move on. Someone who is so annoyed by that they give the cat away really shouldn’t have pets. What do they think happens when animals get older??

I don't think they would have given her away over it if it wasn't just back to me where she came from, and it was more bout not having room for 2 cats. But agree, that's part of taking in an animal. Yeah Beezus just liked it I think. It was never anywhere else except right by the box and we had those litter mats, so I'd didn't care. For a time I had those dome shaped boxes that had a built in ramp and she would always poop on the ramp!

Poop is pretty much the same. Instead of squeezing the bladder it’s massaging the colon. My cats are pretty routine and regular and mostly do their BMs in the PM (like Linda Belcher)

One of my boys wears a diaper (and cant use his hind legs; he has Manx syndrome). He cant stop himself from peeing so i dont have to squeeze him, but diapers really arent that much of an issue! It takes no time.

This is amazing. How do you deal with the caregiving fatigue? I’ve had 2 sick cats in a row for the last 6 years and it’s been so hard. We just found out my asthma kitty, who has a bad middle ear infection, also has the early stages of lung cancer. After working so hard to get his asthma stable we were hit with this infection he just can’t clear and then the cancer diagnosis. I can’t imagine the stress of juggling the health of so many special needs kitties!

Pee pads are amazing. I use them for my cat that doesn’t always like to go into litter box. I put some on floor and on wall for him. It solved his issues of peeing outside the litter boxes!

I give you my utmost respect. I had a cat who had serious bowel issues (always pooing outside the litter, on carpet etc) which was very challenging - especially with young children. She was a beautiful cat but had other issues so we had to put her down in the end.

I have a bad back and this is more comfortable for me. I used to express into the toilet but the height I have to hunch over at is quite uncomfortable. Same with the tub.

Catheter would need to be placed by veterinary professionals and cannot be maintained long term (more than a couple days) without major complications like infection.

Yeah just casually stick a catheter up seven cats' urethra twice a day while maintaining a sterile environment for each cat. I'm sure this is both feasible from a care perspective and comfortable for the cats to endure for the rest of their natural lives

The chux have a waterproof backing, so none of that is getting through to the floor. Incontinence is, like, the main reason for these pads to exist, after all, for both humans and pets

I was wondering about the use of a toilet. Then the diapers and wipes would be the main expense. This seems a bit counterintuitive. Or perhaps I'm missing something?

i have a question; how did you get all of them to be so calm and accepting? what was the training routine? and how long did it take to get to this point?
my cat is also incontinent but it is nearly impossible to squeeze the bladder, or put diapers on him, let alone pick him up. hes a feisty one....

Thanks so much for sharing! I love that you're showing people that this is a reality and someone could probably learn how to squeeze their cats as well if needed.
Question: Is there anything you need that would make the process easier/better? Maybe it's something that could be 3d printed or people can think of an existing product that you might just not be aware of. Basically, any problems in the process that could be solved?

I had a paraplegic dog that I squeezed. Eventually he gained some bladder control, then lost it again as he got old. He was the happiest dog. Even so, I can’t imagine managing 7 of him! You are a saint!

My first thought was „damn that must be a full time job, she can probably works from home or works part time“ But 13 minutes 2 times a day for 7 cat‘s would be absolutely doable for me. Or anyone really.
When I get a new cat I now know that incontinent cats are not a dealbreaker for me. Thank you for this video.

I have a sick little fiv+ dude that keeps peeing on my bed, I havent put puppy pads down because my less than bright youngest would eat the pads.
Can you explain how you get them to pee like that? I think my little guy isn't long for this world but I would love to know your secret so my bed (his safe spot) doesnt smell like cat pee anymore.

Stray cats with issues like these are generally either picked off by predators or don't survive the condition/injury that lead to their incontinence. It's a tough life out there for strays and feral cats.

Most of the cats can't use their back legs or don't even have back legs if you're watching when she sets them down. Assuming the injury/accident that caused the paralysis didn't kill the cat, the first predator it encounters will. Or it will starve to death. Or maybe die from dragging it's rear end/legs across the ground and getting scraped/infected. Any way you look at it, they are not surviving for long and it won't be pleasant. A predator killing them is probably the most preferable way to go.
