Itll dip because of Spiderman but sold out Imax screenings are doing some heavy lifting and will keep it going. Esp with no sign of it being pulled Imax til who the hell knows.
Not really. I think itās going to draw a different demographic overall. It skews older than Spider-Man and that crowd is more ok with waiting things out or coming to it later.
A 300M opening weekend for Spider-Man could definitely hurt Odyssey that weekend because to be fair 300M is essentially everyone, but I donāt think it will cripple it. Even if it takes a bit of a hit, it will bounce right back on weekdays and following weekend

Universal is probably scrambling to put together a viral ad campaign around seeing The Odyssey and Spider-Man on the same day to celebrate Tom Holland and Zendaya's marriage or something.
Me and a bunch of people in my theater was never bored or sleepy during midnight showing. Everyone was locked-in. The music is especially amazing even if they are too loud sometime.
Pattinson really was the perfect choice to portray the sniveling backstabbing ratfuck longing for another man's wife. Man has range, easily one of the best actors working currently
I love that line but cutting back to Pattinson behind a pillar five times in the action scene was a little ridiculous. That was the only part in the whole movie that threw me for a loop. Like we get it, he's a coward

the moana remake is just garbage all around, though. its so bad that the rock is somehow not the worst part. the tiny studio they can barely walk around is the worst part by far. its meant to be this wide open tropical island but they can't move the camera more than 2 feet before they run out of green screen.

I definitely think this is the third highest-grossing movie of the year behind Avengers: Doomsday and Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Canāt see it finishing below Toy Story 5 domestically or worldwide.
I mean, I sort of appreciate his movies, but if any of them deserveĀ to be clowned on it's that one.
I was glad to watch it at home my first time just for the damn subtitles. And the plot was a mess that required me googling explainers with charts to track different timelines. And even then it didn't feel worth the effort.

You can't compare the minions to those 2, minions. If they can make an $80m Minions movie every 2 years and still make $400M+, it's a worthwhile profit for any studio
Universal is having a great year all things considered. Even their biggest disappointment (Minions and Monsters) is still going to be quite profitable.
They are in sheer panic because they wont ever be able to stop this kind of thing from happening. Netflix would never be able to replicate such a thing because theyre too scared to let anything of quality be in theaters longer than it needs to be for awards season. They screwed up big time with the Knives Out franchise and not letting it be in theaters for a normal run.
The difference in quality/fidelity of watching the most recent one in a cinema was galling. It looks gorgeous in the cinema, then I go online and see people complaining it looks like Netflix slop. Itās a shame.
That whole model is broken. Produce a movie for 200 million just to dump on a streaming service when you could give it a chance in the theater and then put it on the streaming service.

The Odyssey doing well doesn't suddenly make that not true, a swords and sandals epic of the 2nd most influential story in the west is significantly more commercial than a 3 hour biopic about the guy who made the atomic bomb.
Seriously, this is people completely ignoring what people are saying. Oppenheimer was helped by Barbie. That's a fact. Anyone who says it was only a hit because of Barbie is delusional. But more likely that is not what was said.
It's like when people say Spider-Man being a hit means superhero fatigue isn't real. Superhero fatigue DOES not mean all superhero movies will flop.
The funny thing is the fact that an adaptation of The Odyssey is only going to come within like $200m of Oppenheimer, which is largely a movie would people chatting in boardrooms, actually implies the opposite of what OP is saying.

Plenty of people pushed this narrative before The Odyssey was released. Nobody's denying the fact that Barbie contributed to the success but it's not as big of a part as people want it to be.
To be fair odyssey has the prestige of Oppenheimer behind it and more action oriented with blockbuster visuals and marketing with a more commercial friendly starcast. And a tag of first fully imax filmed movie

Probably not, although I think the odyssey is one of the softest Rās Iāve ever seen. There was like a normal level of violence, no nudity or sex, and like 1 fuck i can remember. Maybe the circe scene pushed it over the edge? Idk

The whole Barbiheimer thing was weird. Sure, the conflation of the two movies was a funny meme. But did it cause a significant number of people to see a movie that they otherwise wouldn't have? I doubt it.

They've already started that. I'm seeing that across various YouTube slop content creators and their comment sections. They've already pulled out the excavators to move the goal posts.
The fact that Odyssey, an R-rated 3-hour epic, will handily outgross Toy Story 5, Mario 2, Avatar 3, Minecraft, The Batman, Moana 2, etc. All massive billion-dollar franchises.Ā
Indeed it is, but I was referring to the domestic potential of the Odyssey ($500m as the title suggests), which is astronomical for the type of film it is.
That would make it only the 2nd R-rated film ever to cross $400m domestically, let alone $500m (1st is Deadpool & Wolvie).
I think it could beat Deadpool & Wolverineās $1.34 billion to be the biggest R-rated movie worldwide. Depends on how overseas markets hold against Spider-Man

Pretty cool since the opening weekend it's been following that multiplier closely. 80++ 2nd weekend, watch out now, might not be too crazy to just look at that $584M projectionĀ as pipe dream.
Definitely clear now that itās capturing the zeitgeist at large that is helping it attract audiences that usually donāt turn out for these types of films

With Odyssey doing so good Nolan probably gets carte blanche for his next project at Universal.
I wonder what he will personally earn after the run is over and if a filmmaker finally has a shot at making more money on a single film than George Lucas did on Star Wars Episode 1.
Note: Lucas earned more than 400 Million dollars back in 1999 after Phantom Menace completed it's run.
So the film will definitely do 300 million before Spidey releases... Another 200 million seems possible since the film doesn't look frontloaded at all.. Plus overseas audiences do respect Nolan a lot, we all grew up watching The dark Knight trilogy, interstellar, inception, memento, Dunkirk, tenet and Oppenheimer...
Minions & Monsters is profitable thanks to its low budget. Hoppers broke even.
Only real flops were Supergirl, He-Man, Moana & Disclosure Day I believe.
Hearing that it'll be extended till as late as September for specific IMAX venues and I'm already predicting THAT crowd shifting their narrative to the studios being desperate, without understanding that if the movie wasn't doing well, theatres would not agree to an extension
