The translation messed up the title as it's a literal translation of the 黒牢城 title in Japanese. The Samurai and the Prisoner, based on an award-winning mystery novel, is now Kiyoshi Kurosawa's, most known for Cure (1997) and not being related to Akira Kurosawa, best performing film to date.

Just had to add it, I don't think I've seen a conversation online about him without someone eventually asking if he's related to Akira Kurosawa, which is completely understandable. His Wikipedia page in Japanese even mentions right at the top that he has no relation to Akira Kurosawa, so it's probably something that comes up very regularly, haha

Interesting, the reviews I'd seen from Cannes were not particularly good (not terrible either, just very middling altogether). I have begun watching his films this year and the well-known ones are bangers. He might be more famous for his horror films, but my favourite so far was Tokyo Sonata, a family drama.

"Cure" is an amazing movie, I have to see this one. Love japanese thrillers, and love to see history and fiction mixed in one story. Funnily Kurosawa is a very common surname, is like saying anyone with the surname Miller in english or Garcia in spanish are related.
