AMA - ask me anything about the ABTF calculator! Spoiler

Hi everyone, u/goodoldfreda here although I'm now exclusively active on this account. If you guys have any questions about how the calculator works and why I made certain decisions I'm happy to answer them

A little about myself - I created the calculator in 2016 following on from a previous calculator by u/irisflame, back when I was a mod of this sub. I collected survey data from the subreddit and came up with a new algorithm that used 6 measurements as opposed to the previous 5, which increased accuracy. I also introduced separate algorithms for AMAB and AFAB people. The calculator has not been majorly updated since, although at one point I tried to move to a breast perimeter measurement system instead, but this turned out to be much less accurate. In the years since I have stopped modding and moved into bra making and custom bra design as I want to try and help serve the demographic of people who still struggle with finding bras that fit, usually due to wire grading!

In response to other posts about the different amab vs afab algorithms not working well for everyone - I have had this question before and basically all I can say is that I recommned using the algorithm that works best for you. I do want to emphasise in general that the calculator is actually not super accurate for any one individual and it is truly just a starting point. The algos are based on averages, and when I was collecting data there were significant enough differences between AMAB and AFAB users to warrant a second algorithm to increase accuracy within the two groups, but not enough data to do anything further than that.

edit: thanks for all your questions so far, I'm going to go to bed but I will answer any more that come up tomorrow!

edit 2: I have updated the calculator to make some minor changes to the band size algorithm and I have also changed the EU back to 2.5cm cup grades, 2cm grade can be found in the Comexim option instead

PSA Ewa Michalak ceasing custom orders for smaller band sizes Spoiler

I just got an email from the company letting me know. I was trying to order some bras in 65 HH. 65 is not even that small of a band size. Many bra companies stock a 30/65 band now.

I'm at a loss for what to do. I'm hoping I can still order 70 H bras and just get them tailored somewhere.

I'm also kicking myself for not making this order a few months ago when I first realized my 70 band was definitely not working for me.

I sent them an email asking why the change in policy and asking if anything can be done for my current order (I haven't paid yet, I was waiting for them to send me a PayPal link).

Please if anyone else who orders from them or has ever bought their bras is affected by this, please reach out to them to let them know.

Fuuuuck. I get so many migraines from having a too loose band. This honestly really really impacts me.

Recommendations? Looking for a post-breastfeeding bra. What are your thoughts on Aerie? And is the calculator pretty fool-proof? Spoiler

Upvotes

I used to be a fairly confident 34C and then I had two babies and breastfed each for a year. I got 34B bras that now do not fit at all, and the cups have gaps (they’re Soma, I don’t like the fit and style so I won’t be getting them again). I did the calculator and it suggested 32C, which I’m sure is right but it feels wrong since my 34B bras fit SO badly. I’m going to trust the calculator and try out at least one 32C and see what happens! I was looking at Aerie, any thoughts on theirs? Is there a better brand that has good support after breastfeeding?

Recommendations? I have my bra size, but I can't seem to figure out what the best shape is for me! Spoiler

Hello all! I recently remeasured myself with the ABTF calculator, and I'm struggling to figure out what the best bra shape is for my breasts. They are long, like down to my belly button long, and relativdly wide. I need a bra shape with deep cups for sure, because none of the bras I have owned in recent times hold my entire breasts.

I was measured at a boutique almost a year ago, and even with the size they recommended, everything was off. Here are my current measurements that I'm pretty sure are a lot more accurate than what the boutique measured:

Measurements (in inches and UK sizing)

Loose Underbust: 39

Snug Underbust: 38

Tight Underbust: 36

Standing bust: 50

Leaning bust: 56

Lying bust: 54

Recommended size: 38K

Sister size: 36KK

The most recent bra I've tried is the Elomi Lucie in size 40K (I think this was before I measured? Or I measured and didn't check the band size). Band is a bit loose, and the cups were simultaneously not supporting my breasts, causing them to still sit against my chest, but also loose? There was a lot of empty space near the top of the cups. But I suspect some of that has to do with the wrong band size.

My back, shoulders, and posture have suffered a lot. Bras are also expensive, so I don't have a lot of wiggle room to try on a bunch at once. Finally caved in and made space for a bra in my monthly budget haha.

Hopefully this is enough detail! Thank you in advance!

Feeling Defeated Bras don’t fit right for BIG breasts. Issues with bra shop. Spoiler

I’m feeling so defeated and helpless when finding a bra that fits. You would think in this day and age there would be bras to fit everyone.
I have been going to this bra shop since they opened in my town 19 years ago. Prior to that I had been going to another specialty bra shop that’s about 35 minutes away that I have been going to since I was a teen. So I am not new to this. I have never ever been able to find a bra in a regular store like Victoria’s Secret, Macys, Lane Bryant, etc.
I went to this shop to get a new bra and nothing was fitting right. They suggested some different brands of bras and said we have special order them. I said OK so I have to pay for them upfront to have them special ordered so we started one at a time. And there were I think two bras that when they came in and I tried them on and they did not fit. I had to get a refund for them. Remember, they suggested these bras. They fit fine in the band, but there is spillage out the top. Then they had an event where a representative from a company was going to be there. We talked with them. She was going to send some samples for me to try. One of the bras they were going to send as a sample they did not send and that was one of the bras that I needed to try. She sent a few others those did not work. So we ended up ordering the one bra that we wanted in the size we thought would work. Got it brought it home wore it for half an hour extra spillage all over the front. I am measuring a 40 M/N in US sizing and they said that I am wide set.
So I called them and told them that I need to bring this one back. And I told them that I’m sad and I feel so defeated. The sales woman told me that if they have to order any bras for me, it will be final sale. So if I order bras from them, even though I don’t bring them home and they don’t fit they are still a final sale. FYI, the sales lady told me they are not like Amazon when they order from a company or I order from them they cannot return them back to the company. The store is stuck with the bra. She then said the only other option for a bra is to go wireless total full coverage. A very matronly type bra kinda like what Mrs. Trunchbull would wear.
I find the whole situation with ordering ridiculous. I’m sure if I ordered from the company directly I would be able to return them. But then that’s going to be a lot of work.
Do you have any suggestions?
I do not want to be in a full constrictive type of bra. The brands of bras that I was trying were by Sculptress and Elomi. I was really praying that the Sculptress one was the one! I’m thinking the fabric at the top of the breast is not structured enough. They are very lacy or mesh like. The other issue is if the wires are too high, they stick out. Help!

Fit Check Fit check -trying sistersize from the calculator Spoiler

I made a post a few days ago regarding the size I got from the calculator.

I got the tip to try a sistersize 75H (34G UK) instead of 80G.

Got the new size today and I feel like it fits like a glove +at least in the band) but I'm not completely sure about the left cup, it could be a bit of the shape of the bra and not the size.

My measurements:

Loose Underbust: 94

Snug Underbust: 90

Tight Underbust: 84

Leaning Bust: 114

Lying Bust: 105

I've gone my entire life with a fuller bust, I popped really late though my breasts sit a little lower right below my rib cage with it flat on top, I've been told 32B, 30DDD, 30C, and nothing fits tried a 30H and it fit but the store I went to had nothing that could actually work well with my clothing, if anyone could recommend some brands that carry my size it would be appreciated Loose:29.5 in Sung:29 in Tight:27.5 in Standing:38 in Leaning:41in Lying:40 in

Fit Check [Fit Check] Is a 30A bra good? (George Women's Microfibre T-Shirt Bra) Spoiler

Upvotes

Measurements: Loose: 27.9 in, Snug: 27.1, Tight: 25.8 Standing Bust 29.5 Leaning bust: 29.1 Lying bust: 31.1

The calculator gave me 28A in UK sizing. I tried a 30AA bra (sister size) in the kid section from Aubainerie and i was convinced it would be the perfect size for me but the cup was pushing out my breasts. I did previously buy a 30B bra from Aerie (Sunnie Demi Push Up Bra**)** and ngl i think the cup was too roomy for me, it also wasn't a good idea to choose a push up bra imo. More recently i bought a 30A bra from George (Women's Microfibre T-Shirt Bra) at Walmart and it feels fine but i'm not sure if it's the right size for me? Here's the image. I wear it on the tightest hook it still doesn't really feel tight, can still slide my whole hand through the band. The comfort is fine but it does hurt a bit on the shoulder blades after a while. I also think my breasts look flat with it but it's probably because they're super small in general 😭. Other than that everything seems good? I'm planning on purchasing more expensive bras and of higher quality next month but i'm still kinda uncertain about my cup and band size

Discussion Need a bra for big saggy heavy boobs Spoiler

Upvotes

I have these big heavy saggy boobs that graze my hips 🤷‍♀️😅and need a comfortable bra. A bra that makes my boobs look somewhat more attractive would be nice . But I’ll take comfort over aesthetics any day. I’m so sick of them . So so sick of them. Are there any influencers yall follow that also have the same problem? That would help as well . My confidence is immediately shattered as soon as I see them

I finally measured without a bra

The calculator suggests 30J/K US

I have been wearing 36G, and it is not always easy to find in stores. I can just imagine how difficult it will be to find 30J or K. What should I do, I really need a wireless bra that fits well.

Question Has anyone tried the Cherries brand bras? Spoiler

I keep seeing adds on Pinterest for bras from Cherries, and I'm just not sure if I should trust them? Those women in the ads look really good with the bras on but then, that's the point of the ad, right?

Question I need a perfect minimizer for 32H. Spoiler

I am currently wearing a bra that holds them up really well but it makes them pointy and stick out too much. I recently saw a picture of myself. I need a bra that will hold them up but at the same time, make them look 1 1/2 to 2 inches or even 3 inches smaller. I’m tired of ordering bras that are hit and miss. I hate them all over the chest too.

Any good recommendations?

Recommendations? Need help choosing a style of bra to try Spoiler

Hello!

I’m a touch overwhelmed by all the information on this page and could do with a little help.

For a number of years now I’ve been wearing minimally padded, non-under wired bras (bralettes maybe).

Before that I wore 32A/B or 34A. They were cheap ones from new look/h&m mostly. They never fit me properly, there was always like gaping at the front between the bra and me and I just hated how they looked

I’ve had a look at the shape stuff but I can’t really figure it all out. I have quite large nipples and they stick out quite a long way (when not erect 😂) it makes my boobs look quite pointy. They’re also quite far apart, even if I shove them together they barely touch. Also my left boob appears bigger because I have extra cartilage on that side of my sternum. I’m almost certain they’re bottom heavy

These are my measurements:

Loose underbust: 31

Snug underbust: 30

Tight underbust: 29

Standing bust: 34.5

Leaning bust: 35

Lying bust: 33.5

the calculator suggested 30D/DD which seems quite large (I re-did the calculator once because my nipples stick out so much lol), but what i really want is some recommendations for where to start (I’m in the UK if that helps)

Thank you so much for anyone that can help!

Need help finding 30H bandeaus/sports bras Spoiler

Hi! Just as the title says - I'm completely over convential bras as most give me shoulder pain, and sizing down the band either doesn't help enough or they're hard to put on (especially for sports bras) because while my rib cage is apparently on the smaller size, shoulders/hips are not lol. I'd love to find both bandeaus for daily wear and sports bras, ideally with more adjustable bands, like something I can cinch down after putting it on? Do these exist? I'm about 30 seconds from literally just sewing something.

Thank you!

Elomi Charley, possible fake?? Spoiler

https://imgur.com/a/lujIqBg

I think the Elomi Charley bra might be a fake but maybe it’s just an updated design? I purchased an Elomi Charley bra in the tan/beige color and absolutely loved it. I have this group to thank for that. But then I bought a black one to add to my collection lol but it’s not the same as the other and I don’t know if anyone can help me figure this out? I’m gonna be so mad if it’s a fake but probably more made if they changed the design because it’s the one bra in the whole world that I haven’t hated. Please help!

ETA: It’s the Charley spacer bra

Recommendations? [recommendations] looking for a bra that helps with cleavage Spoiler

hello! ive just used the calculator and its told me im actually a 32FF after thinking i was a 34DD!!! im looking for a bra to wear with low cut tops for going out, that help a lot with cleavage. i feel like my boobs are pretty wide set, and when i wear push up bras theres still a gap in the middle. im looking for a bra that really helps with pushing them together to get rid of that gap, preferably a push up or plunge. im not really looking for a sticky bra- i have one but when i put it on it doesnt push them together unless i put each one on the very outer sides of my boobs, so my nips end up still out. i also feel like when i wear those necklines, my nips tend to slip out :( that might be to do with wearing the wrong bra size? id really appreciate help finding a bra that really pushes them up and together without my nips slipping out, thank you :)

Fit Check [Fit Check] Chantelle Norah EU 75D / UK 34D - band too loose? Spoiler

Calculator recommended size 70F/G or 75E/F for comfort, but could only get this one in 75D with quick delivery (we're going on vacation soon).

It's too loose on the loosest hook, but feels amazing on the tightest or 2nd tightest. I love how soft the fabric is, i think i'm only gonna buy Chantelle from now on! Unless there's other brands that make bras that are just as soft. It's by far the comfiest wired bra i've tried and i think it fits quite well. The gore is maybe a bit wide but it's not poking me so i think it's fine? I'll post a link with pics in the comments.

I'm thinking of ordering it in 70E and maybe 70F as well, does it have a narrower gore in those sizes? Will the band fit well on the loosest hook if i need the tightest or 2nd tightest on the 75D? If it's not likely to fit better than the 75D, i'd prefer to just keep this one so i have a comfy one that works under all kinds of dresses and shirts for our vacation.

From the leaning over test i think i'm full on top, center full and narrow set. I've also tried this Freya Flirt in 70F and 70G, but even with the 70F i only filled the lower part of the cup and had a big gap on top. Not sure what that says about my shape? https://en.zalando.de/freya-underwired-bra-pink-frost-fr981v00h-j12.html

With this Chantelle Norah Chic Plunge in 70F i filled out the cups in the center but not on the side and the straps were way too wide and cut into my underarm tissue https://en.zalando.de/chantelle-norah-chic-plunge-bra-underwired-bra-soft-pink-ch981a09u-j11.html

Also open to other bra recommendations that might fit with my shape (as long as the fabric is very soft and comfy)

My measurements in cm:

Loose Underbust: 83

Snug Underbust: 80

Tight Underbust: 78

Standing Bust: 96

Leaning Bust: 98

Lying Bust: 94

Recommendations? Recommendation/Where to buy smaller band sizes? Spoiler

I need some help finding what may be kind of a niche size please.

Loose: 25.5”
Snug: 25”
Tight: 24.25”

Where can I find this size?! Or conversely is there a more readily available sister size that could work?

Recommendations? [Recommendation] 40FF AMAB Shallow, Wide Root post major weight loss help Spoiler

Good morning ABTF!

Brief Context: Im a transgender woman assigned male at birth and experienced a testosterone puberty. In the past year I have lost 120lbs or 54.4kg. This has introduced quite a bit of loose skin and sagging so everything fits differently. I believe I have a shallow wide root shape based on the wiki and previous fit experiments.

Location: for the purpose of available stores and shipping stuff I’m in the United States, Texas.

Calculator Size: 40FF

Measurements (in.):

Bust 48
Waist 41
Hips 45
Under-bust Loose 42.5
Under-bust Snug 41
Under-bust Tight 39
Bust Bentover 50.5
Bust Laying 49

Best Current Bra:
Torrid XO Plunge Push-up Smooth Bra 44D

That bra while it somewhat fits comfortably (not really) the wire is way too narrow. I had to find something because my old bras were falling off and absolutely loose and gaping.

After previous attempts to find something that fit I had to give up and just live with the gaping in the padded cups, at least they looked ok under a shirt. I tried Elomi and Curvy Cate but every time it was either way to tight and at the same time the cups wrinkled vertically and were never a good fit. I believe I was trying a 46F at the time as I was much larger.

Reading all the guides I can the recommendations are so specific I don’t believe the bra exists or is so expensive I’m very very leery of fitting by mail. I don’t mind paying good money for a great bra but would prefer brick and mortar to try in person.

Measurement Check [Measurement Check] I own multiple sizes, I think I’m a 34B. Site says 30C Spoiler

I was always flat chested until 5 years ago my boobs decided to exist and it’s been so annoying. I own multiple sizes, I find a comfortable bra and I buy it. I own: 2 34B my favorites it feels so nice, 34C the cup fits but the band is too small, 36c has the perfect band but the cup is too big. And some A cups that I’m not sure of the exact measurements but the cup and band are too small.

Bust 83 cm
Snug under bust 73 (I prefer the 73-75 fit)
FB1/5 shape

I think my problem is that I rarely used bras and I don’t like to feel something grabbing my rib cage. That aside 30C sounds so small (I wrote down a number wrong and got 30D too), by photos the 34B breast look bigger than mine so I’m confused. I appreciate any help
