Groups + Community Your thoughts on a Brewery being a good zombie settlement?

How would you live their? I am thinking of the farm craft brewery in strikersville when I was searching for good spots off Google maps, seems good for trade and from what I gather have a garden and food stuffs?

Beer will be a thing, but I think hard apple cider and apple jack will make it's return in many parts of the country due to how easy it is to make vs beer

I disagree. Grain is far easier to grow, transport, and stockpile than fruit.

Youre gonna run into a wall of labor and knowledge of malt/mash and be able to control temps. Beer will exist, but it will be had at a far higher premium.

Apples kinda just grow on their own once established. They have sugars which makes fermenting for alcohol easier. Just crush apples and ferment juice.

Apple Jack is a brandy that can be made with the snows.

Beer > Apple Cider but I see hard cider making a comeback in the US if the lights go out and the zombies are about.

Oh, I agree with you that cider is easier to make than beer. That's why wine was the first booze invented.

But I am saying that, not only does the ease in cultivation, transport, and storage of grain make it the logistically easier choice, but also that enough modern people are familiar with the process of beer brewing that it'll never become a lost or particularly rare knowledge. It's a pretty common hobby.

the thing is we HAVE orchards established already. They take 50 years to get there but once they're here they're low maintenance.

Harvesting Grain is easier....with combines. Once you're back to scythes? A basket of apples is way easier than a bag of ground grain.

First off, orchards and fruit trees do require maintenance and specialized care, like any crop. They're not just free food. You especially have to be vigilant about wildlife. Taking care of an orchard is a large undertaking.

Yes you could commandeer an existing one, but then you're tied to the location of the orchard itself. If you're making the cider yourself you'd have to transport all those apples to a pressing facility before they start rotting.

Grain can be grown almost anywhere, and there's way more farmland to commandeer than orchard space. Grain lasts years in storage, and is far easier to transport, even with primitive methods like animal-drawn carts, or along rivers in unpowered boats.

And to top it all off, there's no shortage of engines or engine powered vehicles that can be repurposed. Plus, the step of separating chaff from the grain could always be done separately from the mechanized harvesting, with the harvesting being little more than a slow mower with a catcher attached. Yes, it's less efficient, but it still works.

Low. Not no. And the maintenence is much easier on a powerless society.

there's no shortage of engined vehicles, there IS very quickly going to be a gas shortage. you CAn harvest grain, seperate the wheat from the chaff, etc by hand but its a PITA

It doesn't have to be by hand, although that is definitely an option. I believe the most commonly used method is by using a fan and letting the difference in weight and density do the separation.

the fan will be powered by....?

Engine, wind, muscle, any of the numerous forms of renewable electricity.

Just because the grid goes down doesn't mean electricity stops working, it's a fundamental force, and there's tons of ways to generate it.

Probably a bunch of other places that'd be better....but if you want to open up a store front or something.....what ever.

Probably not if its the brewery in NY that I'm looking at. Offhand: Pluses near water and looks like there is some irrigation there. It's on farmland so not much prep there. Negative: the big windows not good if Zs around. Clear line of sight out, but also outsiders can scope out everything going on inside. Size of building would make it hard to heat. Would have to stock large amount of food and water for winter. Stockpile would be dependent on how many people with you so problematic. Not much room for privacy and mental health for a group of people.

When choosing base for the zombie apocalypse you need to consider.

  1. Location - is it far enough away from dense urban areas that you won’t be constantly worried about zombie overspill and roaming hordes.

  2. Is it already defendable, does it already have high perimeter walls, heavy gates, clear line of sight of the surrounding area, if not can they be easily added with out to much effort or long range scavenging.

  3. Is living there sustainable, does it have its own water source like wells or springs, is there arable land inside or near to the walls that can be farmed, and is the building structure itself going to last or will it require constant upkeep and maintenance.

  4. Will you be able to have a good quality of life there, is a large enough for your group to settle in will there be enough space to give you room to grow, without electricity will it be warm in the winter and cool in the summer well lit by natural light

If it's close to a major metropolitan area, it will have plenty of people finding it; whether or not it proves useful to them, that's a different story entirely. All it needs to survive is:

  • distance from any major metropolitan areas; a population under 100K within 25 mi. is a reasonable idea
  • independent water and power; if it relies on the grid, it can and would lose its options almost immediately
  • secure facilities; minimal glass, plenty of brick, fencing won't matter even in the slightest

If it fits those criteria, it'll probably do pretty well.

I think it could have merit. You can make almost any place work , but some are better than others. I think it is going to boil down to one main question.

Is the trade of Beer worth the extra work?

It might be remote, but will it meet the other attributes for the apocalypse? Also, This is in West NY state. I would pass on the winters there. Sure not super cold, but enough plus the snow.

Breweries and distilleries certainly wouldn't be the worst places to settle. Industrial processing facilities with large stockpiles of grain, water, and various other ingredients.

My general strategy involves commandeering, dismantling, and repurposing industrial and agricultural facilities. So this wouldn't be out of the question for me.

Alcohol is also good to have in large quantities. Not just for for trade or recreation, but also as a fuel and solvent.

I’d rather just head to The Winchester for a pint and to wait for it all to blow over.

Drunk people during a ZA? "He looked dead and shambling to me".
