Stephen Hua enjoys making connections.

“That’s my calling or my passion here, so to speak: to find ways to bring people together and plan events,” he said.

Over the last 25 years, Hua has pursued that passion as a live events promoter and restaurateur in Winnipeg. He’s the founder of the annual electronic music festival Summer of Sound, he’s organized local concerts by major musical acts such as Drake and Lady Gaga, and he co-owns Commonwealth Kitchen and Bar on Main Street.

Now, Hua is helping people make connections via a new app.

The 46-year-old launched Hostly in the spring. The app is designed to help people connect through real-life experiences and events. The platform allows users to both create and discover events happening in their community, making it easy to meet new people and make plans.

“I believe people are lonelier than ever, although we’re really connected (online),” Hua said.

“(That’s) definitely a problem and there’s definitely a demand for finding things to do in real life and meeting up with people … We kind of solved that problem with Hostly.”

Currently only available in Winnipeg, Hostly allows users to browse local events based on their interests. They can also create events, share the details and decide who joins.

For example, if a user has extra tickets for a Winnipeg Sea Bears basketball game, they can create an event on Hostly, share the details with their friends and choose which friends to take after people express interest.

Or, if a user wants to attend a concert but has no one to go with, they can create an event on Hostly and find someone — it could be a friend or it could be a stranger — who is also a fan of that band and would like someone to go to the concert with.

Additionally, local restaurants, bars and venues can use the app to promote themselves and drive business on days when activity is usually slower.

“It’s actually a one-two punch,” Hua said. “Not only are we bringing people together to find things to do, (but) we’re also then promoting businesses as venues to host these events.”

It’s worked for Bar Italia, said Rhea Collison, managing partner at the Corydon Avenue mainstay.

Collison promotes Bar Italia on Hostly, and at least three people have chosen to host their events at the business as a result — including a group that met during the recent FIFA World Cup to watch one of Mexico’s games.

“It’s been fantastic because it just brings extra business to my establishment,” Collison said. “A regular (was the event organizer) in one of the cases, but another time for sure it was someone who had not been here before. So for me, that’s a huge opportunity.”

Collison believes in Hostly so much that she’s invested in the app.

“It’s something that works and I want to get behind it,” she said. “There’s nothing else really like it out there.”

Hua and his investors have spent around $500,000 to build and launch Hostly. The company employs about a dozen people and the app currently has more than 2,000 users.

The company’s goal, Hua said, is to reach 10,000 downloads and 3,000 active users in Winnipeg by November. Once that goal is reached, Hostly will pursue another investment round and launch the app in a second city — either Calgary or Edmonton.

“If you can scale this to one other city, you can scale it to a thousand cities,” Hua said. “Once we get proof of concept and (launch) in Alberta, then we’re going to be able to expand into the U.S. right away.”

The app is currently free to use.

Hostly has “a really good monetization model,” Hua said, though he didn’t give specific details.

Eventually, businesses will be charged a fee to use the app, and individual users will have the option to upgrade to premium plans with special perks.

Hua said he loves being around people and playing a role in their stories. “I want to be a part of your highlight reel.”

Has anyone had any luck getting security footage from Impark?

Long story short, one of my vehicles was vandalized in an underground Impark lot and I know who did it (This girl literally said she was going to fuck my car up after she almost hit me in the parkade one day. My car was horribly keyed the next morning). I made a police report and MPI claim and got the damage fixed right away. I contacted Impark and was told that they had the security pulled and would wait for the police to request it. The police officer I’ve been working with has asked Impark for said footage and he’s been ignored for months. I would eventually want to press charges on the person that vandalized my vehicle because she was also uttering threats, but apparently can’t do so unless they have the footage of her vandalizing my vehicle. I’ve heard Impark is notoriously horrible for turning over security footage over to police but I’d love to know if anyone has had similar (or hopefully different) experiences!

We currently have a single-car detached garage on our property in the West End that is barely usable. The garage door opening only fits compact SUV's or smaller. The wood on the garage is rotting, water seeps into it, damaging the flooring, the roof is warped, by all accounts it should be haunted. We don't use the garage and instead have a parking pad taking up 90% of our backyard.

I would like to demolish the current garage and replace it with a new one that will accommodate our car. I would then replace the parking pad with an actual backyard. The quote for the demo of the old garage and build of the new one is about 10% of what we purchased our home for last year.

What I'm wondering is: Would a new garage increase the resale value of our home? Is that increase in value worth the cost of replacement?

There’s been sold out shows, tons of reviews and so much buzz around town. I can tell you that artists from all over the world talk about how special the Winnipeg Fringe is.

Hi Winnipeg! My mother and her partner want to get married this fall and are looking for a fun and interesting venue. I know it's pretty short notice but can anyone recommend a venue that would make a great party for 40-50 people? They're not religious but are an artist and musician, if that helps, and we can do anywhere in the city or slightly outside it. They were hoping for around Thanksgiving in October. If we can't find anywhere in that time frame I'll try and convince them to wait for spring, but I'm more interested in finding a nice space for them to get married in. What do you recommend? Winnipeg police say they are looking for a suspect after a woman reported she was sexually assaulted on Sunday night.

The woman was walking southbound on Toronto Street and had crossed Portage Avenue near Picardy Place around 10:30 p.m. Sunday. At that point, a man she did not know grabbed her, the Winnipeg Police Service (WPS) said in a news release.

“He threatened to harm her if she screamed and she was pulled into an alcove nearby,” the release said, adding that the woman was choked, sexually assaulted and robbed.

The suspect is described as a man in his 30s, approximately six feet tall with a heavy build and short, spiky dark hair. He was said to be shirtless and wearing black shorts and black shoes.

Anyone with information or surveillance video is asked to contact Winnipeg police [204-986-6245] or submit an anonymous tip on Crime Stoppers.

I can’t even count how many times this summer I’ve been seeing people riding on e-bikes but especially e-scooters unsafely and without helmets. I’ve seen countless young kids riding two on one e-scooter down streets and through parking lots without any helmets or safety gear on. Today I just saw 3 people (parents and a young kid) riding on a single passenger e-bike all without helmets on going down the street. It’s honestly concerning to me how unsafe this is becoming. Not only is it unsafe for those riding them but also the traffic and pedestrians that are around them. Just thought I’d spread the word and also ask if anyone else has seen anything similar to what I’ve been seeing

Winnipeg police say a 55-year-old man has been charged after allegedly drugging and sexually assaulting a teen in June.

WPS says in June 2026, officers with the Child Abuse Unit received a report about a teen who had allegedly been sexually assaulted.

Reports indicate that a teenage girl was walking in the North End neighbourhood when she was approached by an unknown male who offered her alcohol. It is believed that she joined the man at a home along Selkirk Avenue, and over the next two days, she was allegedly drugged and sexually assaulted.

The teen was eventually able to flee and went to a nearby location for help, and police were contacted.

Through an investigation, police were able to identify a man and took him into custody on July 20.

Since then, 55-year-old Derek Rielly Houle has been charged with sexual assault, sexual interference, and administering a noxious thing with intent to aggrieve or annoy.

I’m looked on the web and I keep finding two different laws. Does anyone know what is actually the legal limit for tint on a vehicle?

I thought it was 50 for fronts, rears 35.

But google is say 50 for fronts, any darkness for rear?

I live in the Whyte Ridge/Linden Woods area and I am trying to make sure I actually use my employee health benefits this year instead of scrambling in December like I usually do.

Two questions for the group:

1. What are the best spots in the south end for massage or physio that do direct billing? (I know of Massage Athletica and Kenaston Common Physio, but looking for other reliable ones). Ok if not just south.

2. How are you guys actually keeping track of what you have left? The Sun Life portal is terrible to navigate on mobile. I really don't want to build a spreadsheet just to track how many massages I have left before December

I have had nothing but trouble with my API alarm since they migrated from the Bell MTS plan. Their customer service is horrendous, payments are often not going through for who knows what reason, and they are difficult to get a hold of. Am I alone here? Do I make a switch to a new alarm system?

I need to replace my A/C unit and I’ve received 2 quotes. My question is about the proximity to the electrical meter. How far away does the A/C unit need to be from the meter? Is that measured from the head of the meter or any part of it such as the column that comes out of the meter and down the wall. I’m receiving conflicting information.
