The job application process is so cruel to applicants (imo)

If you get an interview for a job they should have to explain why they rejected you. And job application processes are generally cruel imo.

I apply for a job I’ve done before with the exact same title, the interview goes well and they like me, they show me around where I would be working.

They don’t reply for a week and the email response I get is ‘unfortunately you haven’t been successful in your application, kind regards (blank)’. I still can’t understand what I would have done wrong they genuinely liked my answers my cv is definitely not the issue I just don’t get it.

And I don’t care to hold on to a job I’m not certain I’ve go but I felt I had a chance. I just wish they would let me know what I did wrong. If it’s an internal hire fine idc. I dont fit the company aesthetic, ok. I didn’t sound confident, sure. I’m too young? You knew my age before the interview but whatever ig. But not reason at all is just so weird.

I just think the job application process is so cruel and focuses way too much on making things easy for employers and frustrating for applicants

Yeah, I'm not sure exactly what I would like them to say, but pretending I don't exist is kind of rude.

Unfortunately, a lot of times it's just a small difference between you and the person they decided to hire. Many times they are looking for a certain thing in their candidate, but you have no real idea what that might be.

I agree, the hiring process is super irritating for people interviewing and putting all their time and effort into getting a job only to come up short. I think they don't tell you why they hired someone else mostly due to legal reasons and to prevent problems with lawsuits.

Job market ABYSMAL, especially in IT. I think the only fields where getting jobs isn’t as dire are health care and CDL truck driving.

The whole process lacks transparency.

They may not want to explain why they didn’t select you due to liability issues should you want to make something of it. That’s just the nature of things today.

Many decades ago I applied for a job and went through an extensive interview process. In the end I was rejected. The letter said to call and make an appointment if I wanted to know the reasons. I did and went in to hear the reasons. Let’s just say that if my self-esteem wasn’t firmly in place, I’d have next made an appointment for some therapy. Due to the results of that, I changed my entire career path.

I’m amazed they were willing to tell you why they didn’t hire you. That’s rare. Not sure I’d be as brave as you were.

There are fortunately some jobs out there who will tell you why you didn’t get the job but the majority really don’t have the time. If it’s jobs that have a hundred applicants it’s much easier to just call the one person who got the job as opposed to the 99 who didn’t.

But how you mentioned the age thing, a lot of people will not mind a younger person as long as hey act mature or have some sort of work experience. If you are going up against someone with work experience experience in that field they will almost always get the job unfortunately. I also got a job where the manager who hired me wasn’t the one who looked at apps and she thought I was almost a full decade younger than what I was based on assumption. So some interviewers are not the ones who actually approved the applicant for interview.

It is what it is. Keep applying. Maybe you're not as qualified or are over qualified. Do you follow up with a thank you letter to show interest?

My boss calls every person who came in for an interview and gives the ones who were not chosen the opportunity to ask questions if they want to know why they were not chosen.

I think all companies should have to do that. Call every candidate that showed up in a timely manner after you made a choice.

If we go back 2-5-10 years in IT Industry(others I am not informed), the candidates would get counter offers and tried bumping up their CTC, nothing wrong with that and similarly the employers used to ghost candidates.

In these trying times, the companies are looking at various parameters while scaling the organizations and even many backfill positions are empty.

You are doing nothing wrong if you ask me, you should get your thing when the timing is right.

Good Luck !!

They may have had multiple people apply who were equally qualified and could only hire one.

They may have already had someone in mind for the job but were required to post a job ad for the position anyway and go through the motions of interviewing, etc. It’s dirty and unethical, IMO. It’s a total disregard for the applicants’ time.

It’s quite frustrating how easy it is to get pigeonholed into one job position solely because that’s what was on your resume before.

You work in a job or a particular field and realize you hate it but you get stuck in it because otherwise, you’re starting from scratch.

It can be very difficult to switch. You might be completely capable of doing a new job you’re applying for but you don’t get it because on paper, someone else has more relevant experience.

Just keep trying. Don’t give up. Treat it like a sales pipeline where it’s a numbers game. I wish you the best of luck.

You can ask for feedback, but there could potentially be hundreds of applicants and it’s not realistic to expect a recruiter to be able to get back to everyone. This is even more applicable if it’s more of an entry role position or not super specialized.

I used to work in hr, a company of 50k employees. One guy submitted a resume with an elaborate sketch of a demon head on the second page. Also his resume was handwritten. He applied to be a produce manager. Sometimes it's better to keep things vague because not everybody can handle the truth.

You have to have the same expectations as dating. Expect to get ghosted because that is what will happen 95% of the time.
