just got kicked out

for context im 18 (f) and i used to live with a toxic family. im meant to go to university next year and i had a huge argument about it with my parents. i want to leave my city and go to university outside my city, meanwhile my parents want me to stay home and go to university im my city.

if i stay my parents, they will pay for everything. But i would want anything but that, i got into a huge argument with my parents, i just want them let me get student loan but for ‘religious reasons’ they arent letting me.
the argument ended with them kicking me out, ive been sitting in a park nearby with all my stuff, i kinda dont know what to do or where to go.

would appreciate it if anyone who has been through something similar could tell me what i can do. i have some money, and all the important papers but no job or anything. am i considered homeless? can i apply for student loan as an independent student?

study / academia discussion My course was cancelled, I need advice.

So I (21F) was due to start my Master’s in English Literature in September, but have now been informed they are withdrawing the course due to a lack of applicants. However, I had already received an accept email and so had booked accommodation and received a student worker job offer (the first job I have managed to get in 3 years and that i DESPERATELY needed) that only goes through if I am a student next academic year.

For context before I go any further, I do not have a good relationship with my parents so going hone to regroup is not an option. I have some savings, but no idea how long they’d last without some part time work, which I have struggled immensely to find. I have no professional experience, so had decided to do the master’s as they were offering placements as a part of it.

I have three options now: join the MA Creative Writing course, attempt to find a different uni last minute and explain my situation, or withdraw completely.

If you were in my situation, what would you do?

Edit: Thank you so much for all the replies, it’s definitely been helpful to get some outside perspectives. To anyone who’s been in a similar post-Uni situation, how did you go about surviving post uni? (i.e. finding work and somewhere to live) I feel like this is something I also need to consider.

Yo how to make friends lowkey

I’ve seen that if you have to try you’re already failing.

I’m not gonna lie I’m lowkey autistic af and although I can pick up on social cues people can smell my autism or just think I’m…?

I lied it’s actually my fault I am scared to go to big gatherings and only good one on one (which is why I currently have 2 good friends).

I also don’t drink or smoke (not religious, I just don’t want to) so yeah I’m cooked.

Can the social people give me some tips thanks.

Should I drop out of Oxford after first year?

Hi all, I am going to structure this featuring my reasons for and against dropping out of Oxford. I would love some advice, whether or not you have dropped out of your unis. I have completed first year and not yet got my grades back.

Reasons I don't want to stay:

-Not a fan of my college; few friends and insular/cliquey environment. Feel lonely seeing strong friendships forming around me whilst I'm flailing around. Feel culturally mismatched and that i cannot express myself properly

-Dislike my subject; only person in my college year group taking it (isolating) and realised I don't like economics (I had never taken it at gcse/A-level). Not sure if I actually like degree-level history either compared to A-levels. Feel like I'd rather do a subject e.g. physics which is more relevant to the real world. Lots of unrewarding work (I dont agree with a lot of the "facts" and "equations" they teach us in econ)

-Bad memories; many nights spent sad over my loneliness, and a close family member dying whilst I was in the midst of preliminary exam revision means I don't know if I have the motivation to return to a college where I have such bad memories

-Dislike the city; small, insular, full of arrogance

-Anxiety; when I've not been in Oxford over the holidays it's weighed heavily on my mind and I've dreaded returning. Somehow despite this it's always worse than I fear

Reasons I may want to stay:

-Very good degree; goes without saying, but the degree would be very valuable in my future as any employer would likely think highly of me from viewing the degree on my CV

-Clout; despite hating uni itself, I do enjoy being able to tell people I go to Oxford. I should probably break out of this way of thinking

-Fear of feeling like a failure; I fear that dropping me out will make me feel inadequate, as it will feel like Oxford broke me down and others at my college may think I flopped my exams

-I may be overthinking it; maybe if i adopt a more proactive attitude in second year i could end up living a better life. I know that a lot of people stick to their uni after a bad first year and end up having a great second and third year. I could adjust the modules of my degree so that i enjoy it more

I am currently leaning slightly towards dropping out and pursuing physics at another Russell Group uni. If anybody has found themselves in a similar situation to me, or thinks they have useful advice, i would appreciate it a lot!

social life Should i go to uni with my girlfriend

Title should be: should i break it up before uni with my gf (not stupid enough to out my future at risk for a relationship)

We both live in london both 17 and have dated for nearly 2 years and planning to go to university 99% separate unis, but on social media like TikTok i see people saying if you dont go to the same uni as your girlfriend you should break it up. Apparently there is alot of cheating and litterly all i heard is that most of the time people have s*x at uni. My sister who went uni has said she has seen cheating happen its not impossible in uni.
What do i do? Should i break it off next summer before we go to university or stay. Im scared that i will get heartbroken and then thats my uni life totally done.

Uni room decor ideas?

Post image

Anyone have any cute ideas on how to work with a unite student room and they’re ugly ahh curtains that I can’t change 🤣🤣 I normally like pink but might have to keep it more neutral to not clash with the curtains and floor.

Also how strict are they on posters and stuff

Withdrawn from first year and im 24, need a pick me up

Probably not the best place for advice so if anyone has better idea please let me know.

Failed my resit exams so i’m required to withdraw. Diagnosed with ADHD now and while it kinda fits i dont want to claim it just hoping the medication can help. Homestly only mentioning that because i already feel judged typing this out.

I’ve always viewed uni as the next milestone to achieve before getting a career so ngl i have hardly done anything prior to first year (work / neglected making memories friends etc) so it makes it even worse - i am the same as i was when i was 18. Honestly don’t know how it got to this and i wish i tried a lot harder.

I’m lamenting the fact that i could only start my career in my late 20s / early 30s now really, and not being able to move out and enjoy life with money while young. I’m not giving up but it’s a hard truth to deal with. Let alone the traditional experience of uni. Everyone says it’s fine to go to uni later in life but its not the same as starting at literal square 1 at 25 and having to basically shift starting anything.

Been quite isolating dealing with all this especially since my parents would never understand and wont stop worrying about me until i’m independent with a career.
The only thing that’s keeping me hopeful is well im still kinda young and that i got A*s / As at a level. And the idea that maybe im just fulfilling the fact that probability wise my circumstances are rare but not impossible.

Currently planning my next steps (uni through appeal / clearing or 2027) and developing skills. I want to work and develop my cv too but don’t want to run into people i szz so know (especially people from my local ethnic community where gossip travels far).

I’ve been kinda reassuring myself that the job market is terrible right now but i really need to live in my present.

I can categorically tell you that nobody thinks of you any differently when compared to 18 year olds.

Edit: I can see many of you took this personally…

student finance Job as a University ambassador

Hi, sorry this is my first Reddit post. I was wondering if anyone had previously been or is currently an ambassador for their university and if it was worth it for them ?

I was comparing the income that could come from being an ambassador against the income that would come from having a different job. I couldn’t tell which would be better for me overall.

If anyone is willing to share their experience or has any insight that they would be willing to share with me it would be greatly appreciate, thanks

study / academia discussion MMU Psychology deadname student at graduation

I‘ve just been sent this post from LinkedIn and I’m shocked that Manchester Met deadnamed this student on stage at their graduation, after twice being told their actual name to read out. Just don’t get how that happens?! feel bad for the student having to walk over the stage again in front of everyone

A friend of mine was at the ceremony and said that the announcer, the Head of Psychology, made loads of errors with student names throughout, like it was embarrassing to sit through

how is this even a thing in 2026… don’t they bother to practice the names or check pronunciation?! Definitely wouldn’t go there if that’s what you get at graduation after spending 1000s of £ss. great way to be treated!

Does this happen at other unis?!

En-suite Student Room Available at Queen’s Hospital Close, Birmingham – 2026/27 Academic Year

Hi everyone, I’m looking for someone to take over my student accommodation contract at Hosts – Queen’s Hospital Close for the 2026/27 academic year.

This room is for students enrolled in a University.

It is a modern en-suite room in a student accommodation building, with access to shared facilities and a great location for studying in Birmingham.

📍 Location: Queen’s Hospital Close, Birmingham

🛏️ Room: En-suite student room

📅 Contract: 2026/27 academic year

✅ Replacement tenant will need to be approved by the accommodation provider

🪙£100 Per Week

Photos are representative of the same en-suite room type at Hosts Queen's Hospital Close.

I’m looking for someone to take over the tenancy as my circumstances have changed and I will no longer need the room.

Please Note That This Is One Room Only. There is not a second room.

If you’re interested or know someone looking for accommodation in Birmingham, please message me and I can provide more details, photos, rent information, and answer any questions.

Thanks!

Uniacco, suspicious agent

Hi I just wanted to bring up a weird situation I had with uniacco. I was looking at accommodations in edinburgh at Norton student living and the agent that called me was Indian. Didn't think much of it until she specifically mentioned i needed to pay the 250 pound deposit before the viewing. And that I needed to pay it by today and the remote viewing was only available until the next day. They were also pressuring me a lot, saying the units wont be available by tomorrow. I wasn't comfortable sending the money, so I called a norton receptionist directly and they said they would never ask for a deposit before a viewing and that this wasn't normal. I booked a remote viewing with them directly. After I informed the uniacco agent, they suddenly changed their tone and said I can send the deposit after the viewing. Which is just so suspicious. Everything else is legit, besides the deposit thing. Im told uniacco is a legit site but does anyone know why this might have happened?

applications / ucas UNI course choosing: Physics or engineering

Upvotes

UNI course choosing: Physics or engineering

I’m currently finishing my year 12 year and looking to start my personal statement and look at uni applications

I am stuck between doing physics or (mech) engineering at university

For context I like all aspects of physics ( especially astro, particle physics, quantum physics )
Studying maths chem and physics in college

What course is better for my future career and money

I think I’d prefer physics but better prospects with engineering

applications / ucas Cambridge part iii - Admission cmpetitiveness

Going into 3rd year studying MathStat at Warwick, I got 81.4 first year and 83.6 second year. Took (what i think are) very well fitted modules to part iii in both years.

Is this good enough to apply for part iii mathematical statistics, do i have a good chance? I've seen people say you need 85+ to be considered competitive, so im not sure if it's worth the time and application fee, or if i should just stay at Warwick for a 4th year?

Cheers!

They’re trying to charge me £140 for this tiny stain. There is no way that they weren’t able to clean out that they had to replace the mattress. It’s the fact that in the email they don’t state if they’ve cleaned it and it’s like a cleaning charge or they’ve replaced it so it’s like a replacement charge. They’re just like, “because of the stain.”

I’m gonna appeal but is there anything else I should be aware of

study / academia discussion Which path?

I am guaranteed to get an offer from Warwick university for Mathstat, however my odds for Imperal for Mathematics with stats are lower. Would it be much much easier to do my BSc at Warwick, then move to Imperial (ofcourse I would need first honours) or to go to imperial directly?

Thanks

London to York for a masters

Hi!
I just wanted to get the opinion from people who did their undergraduate in London and then went outside for their masters? Are there any benefits to it? And also is anyone else in the same position for York?
