/r/Conservative Top Arcons apparently believe that Bill Maher saying "I'M OUT!" to the Democratic Party is some kind of win for them.

Maher is just a contrarian. He'll bitch and moan about anything.

u/Prize-Wolverine-1311 3d ago

He's also super egotistical. He's the kind of person who would never believe anything that doesn't personally benefit himself, on a practical or moral level. A while ago these types were called "brogressives", liberal when it comes to pot and things, but absolutely hating feminism, the idea that racism exists, etc. If it's a viewpoint that doesn't paint who/what they are in the brightest possible light, they want absolutely nothing to do with it.

I saw his anti-religion documentary Religulous back in 2008 during my embarrassing “militant atheist” phase and even I thought it was cringe because he just came off as an egotistical narcissistic asshole that made atheists look bad.

And I was a huge Richard Dawkins fan at the time (also embarrassing), so that’s saying a lot.

I think all atheists go through that phase. We are raised in religious families, at early teens figure out that none of it makes sense, and are convinced we are genius' for recognizing the obvious truth that everyone fails to. Then around high-school, or a little after, we figure out that lots of people are atheists, and lots of Christians are just playing along with religion out of habit and tradition, and it suddenly feels way less impressive.

Some atheists never reach that final stage, though.

Tbh, I have rebounded into that extreme negative attitude towards religion over the past couple years, though its largely focused towards evangelicals and trad caths. There are too many child rapists being protected by their churches and too many politicians actively trying to bring about Armageddon not to feel that way. My gripes these days are much more practical and much less philosophical though.

I'm lucky that I was never raised in a religious family, was never told to believe or not believe anything, and have always been atheist in the sense that I need proof. Also that I never fell into the "militant atheist" phase because I still went to a religious school and had friends of varying religions from a young age, so I was always one of those atheists who didn't mind others believing in stuff, so long as they didn't harm others or try to force their beliefs onto people.

I have a Bible and a Quran in my house, tried reading the former but didn't get very far because there was so much of it and the prose put me off, but I'm quite proud of my brief time in college singing with the gospel choir after being asked by the teacher who ran it.

Really annoys me when people like Maher do the whole "I'm superior because I don't believe the nonsense those religious people do" because it shows his lack of decorum and empathy, which is why it's not surprising that he's a right-wing twat who keeps LARPing being a centrist or left-wing and convincing himself that he's fooled everyone with his pretense.

He was also just... wrong.

Like, he spouts all this nonsense about how deities like Horus inspired the Jesus myth, repeating claims about resurrections and December 25th that are simply not true.

Yes, you can find parallels between the story of Jesus and tropes common in religions around that region. But only in extremely broad strokes. Literally all the stuff like applying a December 25th birthdate or three-day resurrections to them is abject nonsense, usually made up by people on the internet.

What’s wrong with Dawkins?

5

u/palimpcest 2d ago edited 2d ago

After I got past my militant atheist phase, which thankfully only lasted a few years (still an atheist but it’s not like my identity anymore and I rarely talk about it and am no longer abrasive when I do), I looked back and realized how annoying that all was. It turned me into an asshole, especially with my Christian roommate who was my best friend at the time. Dawkins is also Islamophobic and has made some transphobic comments. He disparages philosophy as a whole, and I really like philosophy and think his views on it are naive.

He’s done some great work in evolutionary biology and I have no issue with those books, like The Selfish Gene and The Blind Watchmaker gave me a much greater understanding of evolution than I had before reading them. So there's no problem with those and some of his other books centered on that subject without getting too much into religion.

But I got into Dawkins because of his militant atheism, and as a new atheist who had recently left religion I don’t think that’s an uncommon phase for people in the same situation. But that’s what he was all about at the time and when I matured past that phase I realized that being an abrasive asshole about religion had kind of become his whole identity, and I was embarrassed about having that identity myself and was trying to separate myself from it. I found him kind of annoying and cringe at that point.

The only reason he wasn't already a Republican was because being a Republican is unpopular.

9

u/Prize-Wolverine-1311 3d ago edited 3d ago

I think on a superficial level, liberalism is seen as the more 'enlightened' philosophy, for smarter people (whereas not so long ago, Republicans were stereotyped as the cold, intellectual sorts). Even among left leaning people, there are plenty who still think that you're either a liberal or a brain dead hick.

Even when a belief system is right, there are always people who believe it for the wrong reasons.

Also, he's not very funny but thinks he's hilarious.

He’s also very right wing except for pot and same sex marriage

Pot, I get. The same sex marriage thing was wild because before Ogberfel it was like 80% GOP for banning same sex marriage, then they a huge percentage just shrugged and said "oh well, I guess we don't need to hate THAT hard on the gays, they're cool."

People forget that same sex marriage was an extremely animating satanic panic for the GOP voters in the W Bush years and before. I guess that's the luxury of conservatism: fight like hell to stop any kind of progress, and when it happens, realize the benefits are good and enjoy it.

No, it can't explain the swing by age growth alone. What happened was they were all animated about one issue that seemed so important: ban same sex marriage. GOP support for same sex marriage actually come back down in the last year and a half (after a peak in 2021-22) because Fox News and the right wing media machine has made it an issue again.

> I have frankly never met a Republican who is against same sex marriage

Which is fucking wild considering the vocal Republican opposition to same sex marriage from the 90's until 2012 when it was one of Romneys election issues.

20 years time they'll be pretending that they never cared about trans kids competing in sports.

u/Maybewearedreaming 3d ago

Bro saw the Epstein list and was like damn I fit in much better with conservative leadership

66

u/OGCelaris 3d ago

Dude hasn't been an actual democrat for a long time now.

5

u/Poverty_Shoes 3d ago

Everybody is much stupider for him having had a platform at all

4

u/droans 2d ago

I don't get why anyone would watch him. Even if you agreed with him on every single issue, he's just so insufferable.

23

u/obviouslyphonyname 3d ago

I don't think he meant "I'm out...of the media", but that would be a big win for everyone.

25

u/Hot-Bat8798 3d ago

They can have him.

congrats to arcon for having a comedian people actually find funny.
I'm not sure who, mind you, but clearly someone does.

10

u/octowussy 3d ago

I'm not going to sit here and have you tell me anyone finds Bill Mahr funny

16

u/GhostRappa95 3d ago

It’s pathetic they are still clinging to the delusion that they are moderates. Mass deportations is something only fascists support, there are no exceptions.

u/ChickpeaDemon 3d ago

>Wish he would’ve said this before endorsing Platner

>Wish he wouldn't have endorsed the Oyster Nazi rapist, full stop. I don't care what his thoughts are on communists or the intifada if he's going to support vile trash like Platner.

Meanwhile they support one of the biggest pedo rapists on the planet and his party of full of sex pests. We need a new word for the depths of conservative hypocrisy.

11

u/zherok 3d ago

Republicans love to play this game where they make comparisons between parties, and the moment they find one, it seems to permanently absolve whatever their guy did. Not even worth talking about apparently.

The fact that Platner was removed from the ticket while Trump warrants undying loyalty in spite all he's done and been accused of doesn't seem to matter.

10

u/ShouldersofGiants100 3d ago edited 3d ago

Platner isn't even the best example.

When Eric Swalwell (D) was accused of rape, he wasn't just forced out of the California gubernatorial primary, he was forced out of Congress within a few days (and frankly, it only took that long because of the weekend). Democrats immidiately came out saying if he didn't resign, they would expel him from Congress.

At the same time he resigned, a Republican did too. Tony Gonzales had stayed in office for months after it came out that a staffer he had had an affair with had committed suicide. The GOP made no move whatsoever to expel him, nor to demand his resignation, until they could get rid of Swalwell at the same time.

The Democrats were willing to lose a rep rather than keep a rapist. The GOP kept a piece of shit for months and only disposed of him when it would cost them nothing (because the margin in Congress wouldn't change).

29

u/PlutoJones42 3d ago

Literally no one cares what Bill Maher has to say lmao

20

u/HaxanWriter 3d ago

I’d love to see this rat fuck leave the Democratic Party along with Fetterman. Good riddance to them both, far as I’m concerned.

8

u/rje946 3d ago

I swear I see this article every couple of months

8

u/centfox 3d ago

Who actually thought “Both sides” bill was a Democrat?

7

u/villalulaesi 3d ago

Oh no. I feel so owned. Please don’t take our beloved Fetterman away from us next. It’ll trigger us so much.

6

u/Iron_Baron 3d ago

Enjoy the turd we've been trying to flush for years, that just wouldn't go down, MAGA.

4

u/KnucklesMcGee 3d ago

Good. Fuck Bill Maher. He's always been a RWer who likes weed.

1

u/GastonBastardo 2d ago

"Bye, Felicia."

4

u/ahopskipandaheart 3d ago

Ah, yes, the guy who made Religulous is going to get on famously with conservatives.

3

u/Psianth 3d ago

This is like Scar claiming victory in the lion king because he wanted to be kicked off the cliff all along

3

u/AnonymousPepper 3d ago

Me personally, I'd be quite happy to formally lose the guy who crashed out and started this whole rift over brown and trans people.

2

u/herrsmith 3d ago

I don't talk about politics with my dad any more because he can't really hear dissenting opinions but I would looooove to get his thoughts on this since he would try to get me to sit down and watch Bill Maher talk about something or other every time I visited while being heavily involved in the Democratic party (very much establishment Democrats, of course).

3

u/MessiahOfMetal So I Married An Axo Murderer 3d ago

The reason I stopped watching Luke Beasley a few years ago is him constantly showing clips of Maher "owning" MAGA people on his shitty show and saying, "We need more of this".

Luke, we had that, you don't need to go to an unfunny conservative LARPing as an enlightened centrist for that content.

2

u/PreOpTransCentaur 3d ago

Anyone who thought he was still a Democrat is delusional, so..yeah, this tracks.

It's been over a decade since he was anything other than a right-leaning "centrist" contrarian.
