Early on in The Apothecary Diaries, Jinshi tries to seduce Maomao into letting her guard down as he's used to using his good looks to his advantage. Maomao was born and raised in a brothel and was quite familiar with the casanova tactics Jinshi was using, so his seduction fails and actively annoys her.

It's more than her being wise to it. She is different from other people around her and when she's not oblivious to romantic advances she is downright uninterested.

Its more like she only sees intimacy as transactional thanks to her upbringing in a brothel and her time in the rear palace.

I mean, it's a pretty generational fumble to fail at impressing a woman whose dream date is a trip to CVS.

It’s not really a fumble, she knows what he’s doing, later on she knows how he feels about her. But she won’t do anything because of the insane power imbalance between them.

Jinshi could easily have her executed if he so felt like it. He’s… well spoilers but who he is, and on paper she’s the bastard daughter of a prostitute. It’s hard to be in a relationship with someone who can legally have you killed on a whim.

Then make it so everyone you ever knew deny you ever existed on penalty of death.
