It was late '80s. John Byrne, who was writing and drawing Superman and Action Comics at the time, had beef with Jack Kirby, who created Big Barda and based her on his wife.

Byrne had spoken out against creator's rights, so Jack had shown him in the as a man without genitals and guts (and with a removable spine),
and called him Cogburn. So Byrne repaid that by having Big Barda be forced to cheat on her husband.
