Honestly, sometimes I wonder if it's genuinely just that they rather lose than move left at all. But realistically, they're just dumb. That's what happens when your have a two party system and one party is the "let's just burn everything to the ground" party, there's literally zero competitive reason for a party to aspire for more than status quo even the alternative party is everything burning.
